This study investigates syntactic and semantic functions of Korean auxiliary verb cwu that can be classified into three types such as compound, compound-type and ordinary AV. We will take a notion of empathy from Kuno (1987) to account for the subject-oriented modality of the auxiliary verb cwu, and propose the structure for the AV cwu construction to be contrasted with the CV cwu construction in the minimalist approach.

In this paper I present some examples of English used as a "global" language in everyday life around the world, and also in advertising that promotes an international image. The widespread use of English is also encouraged by organizations such as the United Nations, and though technological advances, in particular, the Internet. I discuss some potential problems that could arise if English takes on a truly global status, and consider ways to avoid them.

The purpose of this study is to present the voices of beginners and intermediate level adult students regarding the effectiveness of bilingual Korean teachers versus native speaker teachers in English conversation classes. The responses of the informants are compared to Medgyes' (1992) descriptions of merits of non-native teachers and to the results of Kim's (1998) quantitative study on the same research question. It is suggested that the merits of bilingual Korean teachers be carefully reevaluated and the present practice of assigning native speaker teachers to beginners and intermediate level English conversation classes be reconsidered.

The main concern of this paper is to provide the linguistic as well as socio-cultural understanding of how two foreign languages (English and Japanese) are adopted in outdoors advertising. For the former, we make the comparative analysis between the two in terms of linguistic aspects such as phonetic/phonological, morpho-syntactics and pragma-semantics. For the latter, we examine the social-cultural aspects by scrutinizing a group of words such as proper noun, popular words these days. This study shows that there are clear differences in their use from the perspective of both above. English is widely preferred in use and in frequency among Korean. It results that the use of English is to a considerable degree influenced by the Korean language. Meanwhile, Japanese is rather limited in its use and frequency mostly targeting its native speaker

The aim of this study is to examine the theories of language acquisition and the impact of interaction on children's language acquisition. It is well known that the three leading theories of language acquisition have thus far been discussed: behaviorism, rationalism and empiricism. For each of these theories, in this paper both syntactic and phonological points of view are examined with regard to children's development of language. It is also examined that interaction has a significant impact on children's acquisition of language. Additionally, it will be shown that there exists a natural order in children's language acquisition in accordance with their more and more experience as they grow up.

It is natural that there is a free flow of people, goods and capital in a free international city. Thus, the second chapter of this paper deals with some phenomena in the exchange of culture that will occur in Jeju Free International City. The spread and reception of culture have three types: rejection of culture, complete reception and partial reception. If we don't reject culture, we must recognize a change in the cultual acceptance. Therefore, the cultural exchange can be done to the extent that we don't the Korean culture. In chapter 3, this paper discusses the necessity of teaching practical Korean language skills such as listening, reading and writing, instead of focusing on knowledge of Korean language, and also the necessity of increasing the hours of teaching Korean in order to preserve the Korean language. Korean government, including journalists and editors should try to correct the contaminated usage of Korean.
