The study of the relationship between language and a dialect of language, divorced from social factors of language variation, fails to accommodate the nature of language involved and authentic boundaries between linguistic varieties. As evidence of such an example, African American Vernacular English (AAVE) reveals the characteristics of a creole kin, not a nonstandard dialect of Standard English, which in turn implies that boundaries between language varieties are drawn not on the basis of the similar distribution of linguistic items alone. In view of AAVE, it is descriptively inadequate to attempt to prescriptively describe a variety of language in terms of some deviations from the rules of homogeneous invariant systems which are described within the traditional categorical view.

This paper is an attempt to view the Jeju dialect of Korean from a language variation perspective, which is well defined in the optimality theory as different rankings of the same set of universal constraints. As part of this attempt, this paper will be concerned with a coordinating conjunction "Gwang" in the Jeju dialect, which stands in sharp contrast with "Gwa/wa," a representative coordinating conjunction in Standard Korean. In order to account for the difference between the two language varieties, a few constraints will be introduced with *CON2 at its core, which states that the coordinating conjunction should not folow the second conjunct.

This study aims to clarify the changing processes of the on-glide j-diphthongs in Korean, especially in the post-consonantal. In order to achieve the aim, we examine the pre-forms with an on-glide diphthong and their contemporary forms with a monophthong, and then elucidate their diachrony through comparing the pre-forms and their equivalent forms in dialects, having regard for its vowel system and diphthong constraints. As a result, we identified that the change of an on-glide diphthong are related to the change of a vowel system and diphthong constraint.

The present paper can be characterized as preliminary in its nature looking into the syntactic as well as pragmatic functions of yey in the Jeju dialect. Recognizing the fact that there is no systematic study on UFP of the dialect, we must first look at the use of yey in terms of structural distribution and then its syntactic roles for the interrogative and an interrogative tag However, these explanations are not enough to provide a better insight into the linguistic behavior of the particle targeted. To complement this shortcoming, we turn our attention to the pragmatic force that has much to do with the use of yey in actual usage.

There have been contrasting opinions about the phonetic value of the vowel [ㆍ] in Jeju Dialect; [.] vs. [.]. This research has been conducted to reveal its precise phonetic value as a preliminary study and acoustically analysed the formant frequencies of the vowel and its related back vowels in Jeju Dialect. It concludes that the vowel [ㆍ] in Jeju Dialect has the phonetic value of a mid rounded back vowel and should be marked as [.] rather than [.] in the IPA system. But this conclusion on the basis of this preliminary research needs to be corroborated through further full-scale research in the furture.

In this paper I have examined the present-day status of regional dialects-- in particular Jeju dialect--claiming that the regression of regional dialects is closely related to the undesirable concentration of economy, olitics, and culture on the Capital area. As society is reshuffled centering on the capital city, including the satellite cities, there emerges a trend that the locals take the Capital area residents as role models. This tendency leads to the dialect giving way to the so-called standard language, which may result in the loss of a valuable cultural asset. Based on the observations of the regression of regional dialects, the paper suggests possible remedies for this regression. Specifically, the paper argues for a broader utilization of mass media for the preservation of the regional dialect, a broader utilization of the dialect as tourist resource, its dissociation from negative image, and the invoking of the locals' pride in their own dialect. This research is significant in that the development and preservation of regional dialects may be a desirable substitute for the unwanted excessive use of foreign or loan words, in the end enlarging the expressive power of Hangul, the Korean alphabet.

The purpose of this thesis is to study and survey the expressions of Aspect and Speech act in Jeju Dialect. Nowadays, Jeju is preparing for the Free International City. Therefore, Jeju Dialect is preserved better than other times. If Jeju becomes Free International City, many foreigners will come and they will use only English. How will Jeju Dialect be? Anyway, Jeju Dialect is very important language not only in Korea but in the world. Especially, Jeju Dialect has the specific features. There are many dialects in Korea. Almost dialect is disappeared but Jeju Dialect is not disappeared. There are two aspects in Jeju Dialect. First, it is Syntactic aspect, that is to say, grammatical aspect. ‘-am-’ ‘-eom-’ ‘-amsi-’ ‘-eomsi-’ is continuous aspect, ‘-an-’ ‘ -eon-’ ‘-asi-’ ‘-eosi-’ is perfective aspect in Jeju Dialect. Second, it is Semantic aspect, that is to say, lexical aspect. There are many types in Semantic aspect in Jeju Dialect. Because Semantic aspect is to grasp the meaning of words. In Jeju Dialect, Semantic aspect is shown up more than Syntactic aspect. Speech act in Jeju Dialect is more simple and economical features than other Dialects and Standard language in Korea. In conclusion, Jeju Dialect is related to the conversational situations in Aspect and Speech act. That is to say, the important point is to have grasp the conversational situations.

This paper aims at exploring a chronological description of Korean studies in Russia with a strong emphasis on the case of Far East National University in Vladivostok. Founded in 1899, this university was originally open as a college of oriental studies. Sporadically open though the Korean language course has been since then, it was not studied systematically until 1975, when T.U. Kaplan was appointed a very first Korean language instructor. This is followed by a series of developmental processes in which the Korean studies have strikingly been enlarged in this university for the past three decades.
