Any shifts in language teaching methods throughout history have reflected two popular trends in second language learning: a move toward oral proficiency rather than reading comprehension and a view of human language acquisition as a model for language teaching. With these trends in mind, the Korean government has recently adopted new policies on English education, giving priority to oral proficiency. It has also announced a series of projects to successfully implement its policies, such as English immersion lessons in public schools and teaching English in English. These policies and projects have in turn led to disputes regarding the right or wrong track of English education in general, and immersion programs in public schools, in particular. With these disputes as background, this paper will present alternative solutions to several undecided issues in implementing new projects of English education in Korea.

This study investigated some effective ways for teaching English reading to elementary school students. In order to accomplish this purpose, previous studies mainly done by graduate school students across the country were reviewed. Unlike some studies which have shown that elementary school students have lost interest in reading contents in their school textbooks, other studies have revealed that reading methods which interest students were effective. Primary school teachers have used various methods to teach reading effectively. It showed that primary school students accept reading methods which appeal to their interests. In order to enhance students' interest in reading, various methods and rich print environments should be available to both students and teachers.

Since last few decades, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) has been boosted in language classrooms, but a couple of research studies showed that there was a mismatch between teachers’ perception of CLT and their practice in the classrooms(Nunan, 2003, Sato, 2002). The present study investigated how Korean L1 teachers understand CLT and how they implement it in teaching of English grammar through survey and class observation. The results revealed that a) all the teachers perceived the concept and the features of CLT to some extent b) Unlike their understanding of CLT, their grammar instructions still relied on traditional grammar practices such as teacher-fronted mechanical drills, translation, repetition, etc. Therefore, the possible implication of the present study is that it is necessary to develop various grammar activities based on CLT and teachers themselves should try to revise the textbooks for effective practice of grammar teaching, not depending on the activities given the textbooks.

How does an interrogation mislead the truth of a real crime? This paper aims to provide a register of the interrogation which has extracted a false confession from a suspect. The systemic functional grammar is used to analyze the language used by the police and the suspect investigating experiential, interpersonal and textual meaning of the text. The police play the initial role of progressing the text, while the suspect tends to respond to it. The police use more intricate clause complexes than the suspect. In terms of textual patterns, most of the themes are unmarked and the themes focus mainly on the suspect and the killer. Interpersonal patterns show that the police give commands, ask questions and warn the suspect, whereas the suspect uses a declarative mood most frequently. With respect to experiential patterns, material processes are often found in both the police and the suspect’s texts. The suspect selects more circumstances relating to the crime.
