The purpose of this study is to study about "Who speaks what language to whom and when and to what end?" in the language community of Jeju, focusing on the rules made by extralinguistic constraints. The research especially covers the diglossic situation and code-switching in Jeju. It is predicted cautiously that the diglossic situation in Jeju may last rather than it changes into a single variety community.

This experimental study is concerned with learning problems in the L2 acquisition of the English causatives including non-causative / causative alternation (i.e., The window broke / The thief broke the window) where their L2 acquisition lies at the semantics-syntax interface for the mapping of lexico-semantic structure onto lexico-syntactic structure. Various analyses concerning the possible cause of the causative errors are proposed, particularly in conjunction with BRR (Broad Range Rules) / NRR (Narrow Range Rules) and L2 learners' passivization strategy to avoid the non-canonical structure. Based on the major findings of the experimental study, certain developmental patterns are also observed in relation to the acquisition of English causatives.

The main purpose of the present study goes on the comparative analysis with the focus on pragmatic strengthening and expressivity with relation to the use of the subject marker -ka. To explore this, the present paper shows that -ka which is distributionally restricted extends to the position of the topic marker -un and its replacement can be understood as part of the extended pragmatic functions, i.e. epistemic meaning. Then, our task is to show that the epistemic meaning arises among other variable surroundings in terms of the relative effectiveness in the speaker's subjective involvement by use of -ka

The 'Minjung Sibo' newspaper was published in Korean from 1935-1936 during the time when Koreans were migrating to Osaka. In this study I make clear the social background surrounding the publication of the 'Minjung Sibo' and analyse the linguistic situation as observed therein. Economical factors significantly influenced the linguistic ability of children as there began to appear to be those who were good at Japanese and those who were not. In the case of adults there were those who couldn't speak any Japanese and those who were very good at it. Since the level of Japanese ability amongst elderly people was remarkably low, they were not able to converse just in Japanese and so there were those who spoke a mixture of Korean and Japanese.

As the number of Chinese learners in Korea is increasing, so is the number of HSK applicants. In 2002, particularly, the number of Korean HSK applicants accounts for 68% of the total number of the world except the number in China. Despite this remarkable increase, research on HSK has been hardly done in Korea. Based on the findings of the researches by Chinese scholars, this thesis suggests three fields of research that should be done first concerning HSK. The three fields include: (ⅰ) the analysis of the HSK results, (ⅱ) survey through questionnaires and survey of the same group every year, (ⅲ) feedback and the application of HSK in the curriculum.

This paper covers a comprehensive description of the study on sentences with "ba(把)" made between 1924 and 2000 A.D. The onset of this study dates back to the major works by Lijinxi, Wangli and Lushuxing before the liberation of China. This is followed by the study in the 1950's and 60's, when two ways of research, or diachronic and synchronic, were developed. In the 1970's and 80's, the five comparatively systematic research areas were introduced in terms of a new structure of active aspect and stative aspect. Since the 1990's, a strong emphasis in this study has been placed on a new approach to the semantic analysis of sentences with "ba".

The purpose of this paper is to study and investigate the meaning and kinds about the pragmatic & semantic features of presupposition. We have to distinguish the difference between general usage and professional usage about presupposition in linguistics. There are pragmatic and semantic features in presupposition. In this paper, because of the cancelable feature, the presupposition is studied and treated in pragmatic features. There are three characteristics in presupposition. First, even if a presupposition was negative in one sentence, the presupposition in that sentence is alive. It is one of characteristics in presupposition. Second, the presupposition can be cancelled in some context or the environment of opposite supposition. This is why the presupposition must be treated in pragmatics than semantics. Third, the presupposition of compound sentence is the sum total of presupposition in the sentence structure. To survey and investigate the presupposition in pragmatics and semantics is not easy. However, in the course of the communicative situation, the presupposition is very important to each other.

This paper aims at examining the language policies in the Philippines, which is considered one of the representative nations using English as a second language, and exploring how these policies can shed light upon expanding the use of English in Jeju, which was declared to be a free international city in 2002. The core of the language policies in the Philippines is the bilingualism in which both English and Filipino are legally designated as official languages. In this paper, it is shown that some practical ideas on the expansion of the use of English in Jeju can be elicited from the policy on Filipino as well as from the policy on English in the Philippines.

The purpose of this study is to analyze problems of teaching English reading based on a teacher-centered approach and to apply a learner-centered approach through interaction to teaching English reading for improving a learner's satisfaction and maximizing learning effectiveness. Our traditional English education had focused on a Grammar-translation approach for reading and grammar for a long time. But the approach had been criticized a lot because of lack of English speaking ability. Therefore, a communicative approach was introduced and we has emphasized on speaking and listening ever since. But these days we need an English reading ability again in order to read lots of information and gather them through an Internet and materials. As a result, we need a new approach of teaching reading, and we need to develop and improve it. This study will contribute to the approach to be able to improve a learner's English reading in EFL. A new approach called a zoom lens approach for reading is introduced for this study.
