The purpose of this paper is to investigate linguistic items better decoded and comprehended due to visual support. Six ninth grade Korean students processed the same listening material first in the audio mode and later in the audiovisual mode. Linguistic items additionally decoded and comprehended in the audiovisual mode were investigated. They included not only concrete nouns and verbs, often mentioned in relevant studies, but also adjectives and adverbs. Grammatical items indicating numbers, definiteness, personal and demonstrative adjectives and pronouns, and discourse markers were also found. Implications on strategy-based instruction are discussed.

The purpose of the present paper is twofold: to take a more careful look at the behavioral patterns of nuntey with respect to various verbal systems and to deal with isscanha with respect to topicality. First of all, I will look at the two suffixes according to Vendlers system of verb classification. Second our observation goes on the nature of isscanha in terms of topic organization.

In more recent years, the Korean societal circumstances are under the more internalized economic and cultural changes. Inevitably we should teach children English to enable them to communicate with English speakers. This paper examines the ESL curriculum design, teaching methodology, and the real ESL class through literature review and the study. This is to show English teachers and educational administrators or children the principles and practices for the area of curriculum design and teaching methodology in language teaching. Also, I will explore how applicable ESL curriculum design and teaching strategies are for the children learners at a beginning level to be bilingual.

This paper aims at examining the meanings of the Japanese conjunction noni. In the construction of noni. the modality is limited in the end of both matrix clause and embedded clause. The meaning of noni. in this construction can be grouped as adversative, sense of incongruity, discontent and praise, etc. The fundamental meaning of noni is a sense of incongruity. If the meaning of matrix clause is minus, noni is interpreted as a discontent. If the meaning of the matrix clause is plus, it is interpreted as a praise. In the actual examples in this paper, however, it was shown that there were more cases of a discontent than those of any other meaning. The construction of noni was in good harmony with such words as sekksku, konnani, annani, naze, dosite. This is due to be related to the meaning of noni.

The purpose of this paper is to study and survey the causative construction with the view that English causatives differ from others in at least one type of causative constructions, that involves lexical and morphological causatives. There are only a few lexical causatives in English which are related in events but unrelated in surface forms. In Modern English, however there are a variety of deadjectival and denominal causative verbs which have fallen into this category with the loss inflections, and accordingly, which have the identical morphology with adjectives and nouns and even with intransitive. Therefore the so called morphological causatives with the affixes such as -ify, -ize, -en, en-, etc. cannot be all treated as causatives since some or not a few of these verbs are used both transitively and intransitively. Then these affixes which probably began to be used with the loss of other inflected forms must be treated as verbal affixes denoting diathesis alternation rather than causative affixes. In view of these idiosyncratic properties of English causatives, the present work classifies English causative construction into two types i.e., Type 1 and Type 2 ; the former includes the lexical and morphological causatives, and the latter corresponds to the traditional causatives. This distinction is based on the fact that both types with the underlying meaning CAUSE, presuppose two events, i.e., causing event and caused event, however their syntactic realization and the subsequent semantic implications differ from each other : in Type 1, the causing event and caused event are motivated and committed by the identical causer and syntactically realized in a single-predicate, while in Type 2 construction, two events are expressed in two separate predicates and ascribed to separate beings, i.e., causing event to causer and caused event to causee. An analysis to define causative construction and to identify and classify causative types is developed and their properties are investigated. English causative construction is syntactically divided into two types; the two causative types differ in syntactic realization as mentioned above, while when in both types can be identical in meaning. And it follows this distinction that in Type 1 causative construction eventuality, which is the major semantic property denoted by causer, is manipulative, which in Type 2 it is directive.

In order to account for a desirable syncope of the English word general, Hammond (1997) and Lee (2002) propose additional faithfulness constraints, FAITH(FINAL) and FAITH (CODA) respectively. However, both constraints are not very well motivated in a principled way. Given this situation of research on the issue of syncope, this paper aims at searching for an independently motivated evidence for those constraints by referring to a universal phenomenon of phonological development. In support of this attempt, a strong emphasis is placed on the examination of the child language development and also on the phonological rearrangement of syntactic structure.

Old English manifests various word order types, while Modern English, as an SVO language, tends to maintain the SVO word order type. However, Old English has also grammatical significance in its word order and constraints in their realization, like Modern English. In this respect, this study has surveyed the significance and general types of Old English Word Order.

This study attempts to survey different notions of oral fluency for nonnative speakers with pedagogical implications, based on Riggenbach's overview on fluency (2000). Spontaneous language use intended for communicative purposes are encouraged and the features of language that are taken into account when assessing fluency are amount and rate of speech, length of utterances and fluent runs, use of repetition and formulaic speech, along with other cognitive, psycholinguistic, and sociolinguistic factors to be considered to develop fluency in English education.
