study on the topic realization in many languages is by and large based on the morphological markers. Nun in Korean is such case. Unlike the traditional thoughts, the present study focuses on the functional study of topic within the Chu's framework: marked vs. unmarked. In this study, the morphological signal -nun in Korean is more close to marked topic in its function, whereas zero anaphora, morphologically unmarked, to unmarked one depending on informative value. We take a brief look at the relation between topic and focus in linguistic study, as well.

The purpose of this paper is to find out any difference in the utterance of 'rejection' between the native speakers of Korean and the native speakers of Japanese, by observing Korean speakers' ways of rejection in both Korean and Japanese. The result is that the native speakers of Korean's use of 'conclusion' in their introductory stage of rejection leads to a communicative problem in their conversation with the native speakers of Japanese. As a means of purpose-oriented speech style, this phenomenon is considered to be usually popular among foreigners acquiring their second language. Now that this tendency occurs conspicuously even among Koreans in the introductory stage of speaking their own language, however, this seems to be an effect of Korean ways of rejection on their speaking Japanese. This difference is considered to lead to difficulties in communication.

Grammar-translation oriented teaching method or the audio-lingual method with its emphasis on oral production such as pattern drills or memorization proved unable to provide students with proper communicative competence, the ultimate goal of learning English as a foreign language. Learning theories and researches have shown that listening-first approach is the most natural, effective and successful method in foreign acquisition. As for the selection of materials for listening, students need to be exposed to natural, vivid and authentic models of English. Authentic Materials, such as English radio and television programs for example, can be utilized as listening materials if they are properly graded. Understanding listening as active, dynamic and creative process, task based listening activities in which students are required to listen and do something are considered to be very effective ways of learning aural comprehension. Tasks should be communicatively motivated and the purpose in listening should be an authentic one rather than an artificial one. Actual listening strategies should include complementary interaction of bottom-up processing for selective listening focusing on the forms of the language and top-down processing for global listening focusing on the meanings of the language. Some practical teaching skills are also suggested in this study.

The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze deixis in general. Deixis is the grammatical relation in utterance which is to be marked between discourse act and its feature of speech. In other words, speakers use some objects, events and the situations at the discourse world. The attention of hearer is attracted by them. Included in deixis are person, place, time, discourse and social status, etc. All of them are to be considered in every situation in the course of conversation between the speaker and the hearer. To correct meaning interpretation of reference expression, for example, we have to consider the time and place of discourse, personal relations and the cognitive abilities of speaker and hearer in conversation. The same deixis may appear as various forms by special usages of each language. We know that the strategies of interpretation in these reference expressions can be very different in terms of the study of deixis.

The purpose of this paper is to develop effective learning strategies to improve lexical ability as well as reading ability. The strategies investigated in this paper and the conclusions drawn from this study will provide EFL learners and teachers with a better understanding of how effective lexical strategies can lead to improvements in language learning. To this end this paper will focus on 4 areas of research as a means to determine the importance of context in the application of various lexical inference strategies. In this study we will show (i) some effective ways to increase the success ratio of lexical inference strategies and (ii) some teaching/learning methods to improve lexical ability.

This study examines what English must be in Cheju, which was declared to be a free international city in 2002. Based on the acute controversy over the issue of taking English as a secondary official language, this paper suggests that Cheju still remain a member of the expanding circle in Kachru's sense, while making an effort to increase the use of English as much as possible in Singapore or Hongkong classified as a leading member of the outer circle. This is followed by a series of proposals in compliance with this: devising a long-term English policy, forming a natural environment for the use of English, and introducing an aggressive English education.

In the present paper, we look through tourist guide books on Jeju to examine the way in which Korean is used. A strong emphasis is placed on (i) how properly Korean is used in terms of grammatical standard and (ii) how well Korean is romanized in transcribing foreign languages. In this study, we point out several typical mistakes made in these materials with some suggestions for further improvement. We also take a brief look at how Jeju dialect is adopted and used in these tourist materials.
