Kang, youngah. 2012. A Study on the Correlation between the Acquisition of Relative Clauses and their Relative Frequency in the Textbooks. Journal of Linguistic Studies 17(2), 1-19. The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between the acquisition of relative clauses and their relative frequency in the textbooks. Through the survey to the university students and the analysis of the frequency of the different relative pronouns in middle school English textbooks, this paper shows that the frequency of relative pronouns definitely affects the degree of difficulties Korean EFL learners have in the acquisition of different relative pronouns. Also, the result of the survey corresponded to the Accessibility Hierarchy by Keen and Comrie (1977) and Gass (1979), and the parallel function by Sheldon(1974). In addition, it shows the accessibility hierarchy, the parallel function, and the frequency in acquiring the relative pronouns correlate to each other.

Kim Jaewon. 2012. A Study on 'Babel', the Virtual Etymology of English 'barbarian' and Korean 'beongeori(벙어리)/beobeori(버버리). Journal of Linguistic Studies. 17(2), 21-35. The purpose of this paper is to study the word 'Babel' & its kinship words, and set up a tree diagram for 'Babel', the virtual etymology of English 'barbarian' and Korean 'beongeori(벙어리)/beobeori(버버리)' on the assumption that the onomatopoeic word 'Babel' meaning "confused medley of sounds" is from the biblical story of the Tower of Babel. 'Babel' representing the unintelligible sounds 'babababa' or 'bəbəbəbə' is linguistically significant because (1) they have been used in Ural-Altaic Languages like Korean as well as Indo-European Languages and (2) the sounds is composed of a bilabial consonant [ b ] and the most unmarked vowel [ a ] or [ ə ].

Lee, Hyungu․Park, Kwangchul. 2012. The effects of short-term language learning in the Philippines on university students' TOEIC score. Journal of Linguistic Studies, 17(2), 37-58. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of short-term language learning abroad on university students' TOEIC scores and suggest the need of intensive immersion programs. According to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (2011), the Philippines is ranked as the fourth highest country for Korean students to study abroad. Many students prefer the Philippines due to the cost and small-size classes. The TOEIC score and other English language-related factors affect the opportunity to get a job interview, chance to advance to a full-time position, and annual income. Going abroad to learn English and a high TOEIC score are essential preparation for university students to make before graduation. The result of this study shows that there is a direct correlation between language learning abroad and the TOEIC score. Therefore, in order to improve English, first, it is necessary to reexamine our practical English education. Second, we need to provide not only the opportunity to study abroad, but English education programs in Korea which are similar to studying abroad. Third, to provide extrinsic motivation for students to improve their English, the wider uses of an official English test score are recommended.

Han, Seung-Wu. 2012. A Study on the selection of the postpositional particle "wa" and "ga" in Japanese infinitive "dare". Journal of Linguistic Studies 17(2), 59-72.

Han, Hee-Jung & Im, Byung-Bin. 2012. The effects of ‘Focus on Form’ instruction on high school students’ English reading comprehension. Journal of Linguistic Studies 17(2), 73-99. This study aims to examine the effects of ‘Focus on Form’ instruction on high school students’ English reading comprehension. For this purpose, experimental groups received ‘Focus on Form’ instruction and control groups meaning-oriented instruction, text interpretation and translation in English reading classes. The achievement of upper, middle and lower level sub-groups in the experimental groups were compared in order to determine how students’ reading achievement would be affected by ‘Focus on Form’ instruction. On the questionnaires, the students’ attitude toward studying English in the experimental groups changed more positively and most of the students said that ‘Focus of Form’ instruction was helpful in English reading comprehension. The experimental groups showed higher achievement than the control groups. Among upper, middle and lower sub-groups of the experimental groups, ‘Focus on Form’ instruction was more effective to middle-level students. In conclusion, to help high school students improve not only their fluency but also accuracy in English reading comprehension, teachers need to introduce ‘Focus on Form’ instruction appropriate to students’ reading levels.

Ko, Seongbo․Kim, Wonbo․Kim Hyo & Moon Sungyong. 2012. The Development Strategies of Jeju Water Stories and Their Structure and Words. Journal of Linguistic Studies 17(2), 117-133. We have seen the development strategies and the structure and linguistic function in the creation of stories. To produce Jeju water stories, Jeju legends and myths need to be used directly or indirectly. In addition, the target audiences should be considered. Stories, contents, story development methods and languages may be different according to who the target audiences are. Before the creation of stories, we need to focus on what messages we should convey to the target audiences throughout the stories. Jeju's clean environment, health and longevity images or the valuable memories and love image on the beautiful island may be used in the development of Jeju water stories. The major building blocks of a good story consist of the Three Act Structure; Act 1 (Beginning), Act 2 (Middle), and Act 3 (End). Moreover, words are vital tools to associate with specific things and ideas in our imagination to produce stories. (Jeju National University)

Koo, Ji-Hae. 2012. Trnasfer of L1 writing proficiency among EFL students: Testing the threshold hypothesis with Korean 9th grade EFL Learners. Journal of Linguistic Studies 17(2), 135-156. This study sought to investigate the relationship between L1 writing, L2 writing, and L2 proficiency, hypothesizing that L2 proficiency will act as a moderator variable in the relationship between L1 and L2 writing proficiency. Thirty seven 9th grade Korean EFL students were administered to measures of L2 proficiency, L1 writing, and L2 writing. Results from the linear regression analysis with L2 proficiency as a moderator variable revealed that L1 writing proficiency acts as a predictor of L2 writing only for the high L2 proficiency group. The L1 and L2 essays were also coded according to Connor's revised Toulmin model to examine for rhetorical pattern transfer. Linear regression analysis with L2 proficiency as a moderator variable revealed that more rhetorical pattern transfer occurred among the high L2 proficiency group. Results are seen as to support Cummins' threshold hypothesis, and implications for teaching are discussed. (Korea University)

Kim, Dae-jun. 2012. Korean university students' attitudes towards native and non-native English accents. Journal of Linguistic Studies 17(2), 157-173. This report examines Korean university students’ attitudes towards native and non-native English accents and puts an emphasis on how the concept of ELF (English as a lingua Franca) has become rooted in Korean teaching and learning of English. For these purposes, five text reading recordings with different English accents for a verbal guise test and a questionnaire for an attitudinal study are prepared. Three different groups of Korean university students participate in this study. The data collected are analysed qualitatively in order to answer the study questions. It turns out that Korean university students still consider native English accents as a norm to follow in learning the language. However, they also appreciate non-native English accents as possible options for international communication in the ELF contexts. (Jeju National University)
