The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of short-term language learning abroad on university students' TOEIC scores and suggest the need of intensive immersion programs. According to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (2011), the Philippines is ranked as the fourth highest country for Korean students to study abroad. Many students prefer the Philippines due to the cost and small-size classes. The TOEIC score and other English language-related factors affect the opportunity to get a job interview, chance to advance to a full-time position, and annual income. Going abroad to learn English and a high TOEIC score are essential preparation for university students to make before graduation. The result of this study shows that there is a direct correlation between language learning abroad and the TOEIC score. Therefore, in order to improve English, first, it is necessary to reexamine our practical English education. Second, we need to provide not only the opportunity to study abroad, but English education programs in Korea which are similar to studying abroad. Third, to provide extrinsic motivation for students to improve their English, the wider uses of an official English test score are recommended.
