Greenberg(1966) proposed a word order theory on which every other subsequent work on word order relied. From the Greenberg's theory, Bartsch and Vennemann' principle of natural serialization, which had a great influence on the generative grammar, emerged. However, even in the 19th century, some scholars, such as Weil and McKnight showed a keen insight into word order principles. Thanks to them, functional sentence perspective, largely through the Prague school of linguistics, came into the world. The Prague scholars divided sentences into the semantic level, the grammatical level and the level of functional sentence perspective. Accordingly they also divided sentence patterns into the semantic pattern, the grammatical pattern and the communicative pattern, which are pieces of evidence that they thoroughly studied language in terms of function. Likewise, Halliday and his followers developed the systemic grammar, which placed a great value on the theme first principle. According to Halliday, any element that can appear on the first position of a sentence is a theme and the other part of that sentence is a rheme. This means that the speaker selects the theme as the starting point of his message and everything that follows it is its comment. As a result, Halliday and his followers have been identified as members of a functional school of linguistics. Finally, Tomlin also has proposed three functional principles that govern the order of major constituents of a sentence.

This paper deals with both glide formation and insertion to resolve a vowel hiatus within the framework of Optimality Theory when verbs conjugate in Jeju dialect. In this paper, two crucial constraints Onset and OCP are used in addition to the constraints MAX-IO/MAX-OO, MAX(μ)-IO/MAX(μ)-OO and DEP-IO/DEP-OO. It is shown that vowel hiatus resolution takes place in not only input-to-output correspondence but also output-to-output correspondence, which requires the higher-ranked constraint *Struc(σ).

We have tried to analyze Koreans' listening errors and then explain why they make such errors on the basis of phonetic and phonological rules. The purpose of this paper is to show what systematic listening errors Koreans commit and to indicate what listening strategies should be used to teach English listening efficiently. To improve English listening efficiently, students need to be aware how important English stress and phonetic rules are. Furthermore, the strength of all sounds may not be fixed but flexible depending on what circumstances they are positioned under and the extent of sound contraction and reduction may be different according to the speech speed and individuals. Finally, the importance of English culture, vocabulary and expressions should be also emphasized.

The understanding of discourse needs more dynamic linguistic interactions devoted to the investigation into intended meanings of specific forms of structure. The notion information helps to understand the contextual aspects of discourse, taking into consideration the interactional aspects of grammar. By taking some linguistic structures as examples, the present study aims to investigate in what ways information status is useful in the understanding of the linguistic forms considered here. For this, this study has the following purposes: 1) to explore some linguistic interactions of form and function investigating the several English formal structures, and 2) to see in what way a given structure can be related to a given communicative function or set of functions in terms of information.

This paper aims to discuss how to appropriately adopt teaching methods in teaching Chinese for non-Chinese speakers, which is brought to teachers by the transfer and renovation in this field. Some constructive countermeasures for determining, reconstructing and innovating teaching methods are also put forward on the premise of general principles of Chinese teaching for non-Chinese speakers.
