This paper focuses on the 'immediate future' usage of the Korean language ‘-eoss-(-었-)’, examines the semantic characteristics and various uses of the immediate future usage of the ‘-eoss-(-었-)’ from a linguistic typological perspective, and discuss how the usage can be interpreted based on this. The contents discussed in this paper are as follows. First, by observing the immediate future usage of the past tense marker, it has three characteristics: ‘lexical device can be omitted’, ‘speaker’s certainty’, and ‘moving verb appears as a predicate’. Second, the immediate future use of ‘-eoss-(-었-)’ has three semantic characteristics: [certainty], [accomplished fact], [imminence], and has three uses: location notification, expectation realization, and warning. Third, the immediate future use of the Korean language ‘-eoss-(-었-)’ is judged as a semantic-pragmatic meaning based on three aspects: motivation for utterance(certainty), basis for utterance(implicature), and speaker’s observation method(deictic projection).

This study examines machine translation challenges and potential improvements in the translation of English passive voice sentences. It involved a comparative analysis between translations from the Papago machine translator and those edited by students, focusing on sentences with and without 'by' agents. The participants were 12 graduate students from a school of translation and interpretation and 12 undergraduate students. Additionally, a survey assessed the perceived utility of machine translation. The analysis showed that machine translations often maintained the original English word order, leading to issues such as incorrect subject-verb agreement and the presence of translationese. In contrast, student edits tended to adjust the translations to fit Korean syntax better. Both groups of students reported positive views on the usefulness of machine translation. This paper is to help produce better Korean translations of English passive voice sentences by comparing machine-generated and student-edited translations and considering feedback from a related survey.

Focusing on the possibility and effectiveness of Chat GPT in literary translation, this study compared and analyzed the Chat GPT translation with other translations in terms of understanding and expression. The final Chat GPT translation, which was post-edited with appropriate prompts, showed a high degree of completion close to human translation in terms of verbal expression and context. However, the prospects for its use in literary translation through improving translation ability are positive, despite the limitations of not utilizing the beauty of literature as much as human translation.

This study aims to examine grammatical and lexical errors present in the Chinese-Korean simultaneous interpretation performances of Chinese learners of Korean. By identifying specific error patterns, the study seeks to propose effective training methods to enhance the interpreting skills of these learners. Currently, interpreting classes in graduate schools of interpreting and translation typically revolve around activities to identify errors made by students in their interpretations and suggest appropriate ways to improve them. Hence, accurate diagnosis of learners’ interpretation errors is crucial in operating interpreting classes. This study analyzes frequent grammatical and lexical errors present in the Chinese-Korean simultaneous interpretations performed by Chinese learners of Korean at a graduate school of interpreting and translation. The results show that several particular errors occurred more frequently in the learners’ use of some postpositional particles, verb endings, tenses, and verb and collocation choices. It is expected that the findings and suggested training approaches in this study will contribute to the interpreting training of Chinese learners of Korean.

This research aims to analyze how the National Institute of Korean Language's Multilingual Translation Dictionary interprets and translates compounds formed with uri + noun. The term uri transcends mere possession to reflect Korean identity, belonging, and community consciousness. While familiar to Koreans, embedded within cultural contexts, it poses challenges for foreigners to grasp and articulate. Specifically, this study reviews the dictionary entries for urinara, urimal, and urigeul to examine their translation patterns. The analysis revealed inconsistencies and inaccuracies in term translations and definitions, highlighting areas for improvement such as lack of consistency, overlooking cultural sensitivities, and the potential for subjective interpretation by translators. The study underscores the significance of translation work in shaping perceptions and attitudes of language users and the crucial role of reviewers in ensuring consistent, standardized translations. Through analyzing vocabulary that aptly represents Korean culture, like uri, the study hopes to enhance understanding and conveyance of the unique facets of the Korean language and culture.

This study examines Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE), one of the positive emotions associated with L2 learning, and intends to investigate the factors that contribute to the FLE among L2 Korean learners. Variables under examination can be categorized into two overarching categories, namely ‘learner-internal variables’ and ‘learner-external variables.’ 125 Chinese-L1 Korean learners completed a self-report questionnaire that was used to obtain data. A series of parametric statistics revealed that six out of seven learner-internal variables and two out of six learner-external variables were significantly related to Korean learning enjoyment. Then, a stepwise regression analysis showed that two learner-internal variables and one learner-external variable were identified as strong predictors of Korean learning enjoyment. Thus, it can be inferred that learner-internal variables have a greater impact on predicting Korean learning enjoyment compared to learner-external variables.

This paper examines the necessity for professional interpreters proficient in Jejueo, a distinct dialect spoken on Jeju Island, South Korea. Through an analysis of Jejueo's linguistic features, including phonology, morphology, and lexicon, it highlights the potential challenges that non-native Jejueo speakers may encounter in understanding Jeueo. The imperative for Jejueo interpretation emerges from the global need to advocate for and safeguard the invaluable natural, cultural, and historical heritage of Jeju Island, including landmarks like Hallasan, the haenyeo culture, and significant events such as the Jeju 4.3 Incident. Given the substantial linguistic disparities from Standard Korean and the unique regional culture, interpreters well-versed in Jejueo and Jeju culture are indispensable. Experimental outcomes highlight the difficulties faced by interpreters who have resided on Jeju Island for an extended period in understanding Jejueo, leading to markedly lower interpretation accuracy. Conversely, native Jejueo-speaking interpreters demonstrate notably faithful interpretations. These findings underscore the necessity for separate Jejueo learning, even for long-term Jeju residents, to ensure effective interpretation and communication.

In the digital revolution, remote education widens horizons and breaks spatial barriers. Focusing on 805 students majoring Korean language from 36 Chinese universities, this study used IPA and optimal scaling analysis to reveal the key findings: Korean online teaching receive high importance and satisfaction; teaching methods and platforms need optimization; teaching abilities receive high satisfaction and low importance ratings; 2017 entrants and females are more satisfied with teaching attitude and content; satisfaction with teaching methods and platforms is similar across grades, with females scoring higher. Hence, better teaching attitude and content, innovate methods, upgrade platforms, and strengthen interest-driven education to enhance remote teaching effectiveness.
