Objective : The purpose of this study were to examine internal reliability and internal validity for Short Sensory Profile(SSP) and to suggest the useful criteria for sensory processing abilities in Korean culture. Methods : The Short Sensory Profile(SSP) was completed by mothers of 304 children typically developing between 3 to 10 years of age in those preschool, kindergarten and elementary school located Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The total agency for this study was 14 facilities and the period of study was from July, 2002 to June, 2003. Kim Mi Sun(2001) translated and modified the Short Sensory Profile that Macintoshi developed and the tool for the study was used. The data were analyzed with reliability test and Pearson’s correlation. Results : 1. Internal reliability of the total tests and sections was estimated by calculating Cronbach’s Alphas. Reliability value of the total tests was .889. 2. For internal validity the correlations range from .131 to .575 in magnitude, suggesting that the sections of the Short Sensory Profile tap relatively unique constructs and support the factor structure developed. 3. The total score of the Short Sensory Profile(SSP) range from 118 to 190, mean and SD was 163.12, 14.87. 4. Of 403 children represented by the survey, 32 children(10.5%) met criteria for sensory processing disorders based upon parental perceptions. 5. Cut scores were determined by computing the raw score cut scores for -1 SD and -2 SD. The normal group of sensory processing abilities had score which range from 190 to 149, the probable problem group had score which range from 148 to 134, and the definite problem group had score which range from 133 to 138. Conclusion : Findings from the above study suggest that Short Sensory Profile be the screening tool for sensory processing disorders within Korean culture. Further research is needed to compare with children with the various sensory processing disabilities(PDD, LD, CP ect,).

Objective : This study is to provide the norms of normal children when comparing the performance ability of preschool children while using the kinesthesia test of Sensory Integration and Praxis Tests(SIPT). Methods : Participants consisted of 90 normal children ranging in age from four to six years. The kinesthesia test of SIPT was utilized to investigate the performance ability. Results : 1. Regarding the kinesthesia ability according to age, the average value of kinesthesia performance error decreased as age getting older and that value showed the statistically significant differences between four and five, six age (p<0.05). 2. The kinesthesia performance ability according to gender, the accuracy of both hands and the dominant hand did not show the statistically significant differences. 3. Regarding the kinesthesia performance ability of test items, 1R item and 6R item(26.2cm), 5R item and 2L item(20.2cm) passing through the midline of body and having the large movement in distance and angle showed the difficulty to perform in all the children between 4 and 6 age. Conclusion : By providing the norms of the kinesthesia performance ability in normal children of the above results to the occupational therapists treating children, the helpful data to the hand skill development of children, exercise plan and implementation, and the performance therapy of ADL through the proper evaluation and training of kinesthesia is considered for the occupational therapists to be provided.

Objective : Effect of treadmill exercise on hippocampal neural cell proliferation under normal conditions and alcohol intoxication conditions has been recently studied; however, this effect under sensory stimulation application has not clarified yet. In the present study, the effect of compression stimulation application on hippocampal neural cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus in normal and alcohol intoxicated rats was investigated. Methods : Experimental design: comparative investigation on number of 5-Bromo-2’-deoxyuridine( BrdU)B-positive cells in dentate gyrus 5 days after commencement. Setting: animal laboratory. Participants: male Sprague-Dawley rats of 3weeks old in age weighing 80±10gm. Intervention: animals were randomly assigned into 4 groups; control-rest group (n=8), control-compression group (n=8), alcohol intoxication-rest group (n=8) and alcohol intoxicationcompression group (n=8). Animals of the alcohol intoxicated groups were injected intraperitoneally with alcohol (2g/kg) twice per day for 3 days. All animals were injected BrdU(50mg/kg) intraperitoneally, and rats compression stimulation application groups were compressed using sphygmomanometer cuff times per day, for 5 days following alcohol administration. Measures: mean number of BrdU-positive cells in dentate gyrus was observed via immunohistochemistry. Results : Compression stimulation application significantly increased the number of BrdUpositive cells in the dentate gyrus. Also, treatment with alcohol for 3 days inhibited cell proliferation, and compression stimulation application alleviated alcohol-induced inhibition of new cell formation. Conclusion : These results suggest the possibility that compression stimulation application may help in improvement following alcohol-induced brain damaged.

Objective : To evaluate the sensory processing ability in relation to parenting stress and find the sensory modulation areas affecting the parenting stress in disabled children Methods : Parents of 124 children with disabilities between 3 to 7 years receiving occupational therapy in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do made out the questionnaire and in items of questionnaire, Short Sensory Profile and Parenting Stress Index of short form was included. Results : Among general information, parenting stress of parents had significant correlation with the degree of disability and correlation with the lower level 2 of Parenting Stress Index. The more sensory processing disability was increased, the more parenting stress was increased. Parenting stress showed the significant correlation with movement sensitivity area and under- responsiveness/behaivor area seeking specific stimulation among sensory processing areas and had significant correlation with tactile sensitivity and auditory filtering. Sensory processing areas which affect the most the Parenting Stress were movement sensitivity and under-responsiveness/ behaivor area seeking the specific behavior among sensory control disabilities. Conclusion : The parenting stress of parents with the disabled children had the correlation with sensory processing ability. The difficulty of sensory processing increased the parenting stress. Hence, in order to improve children’s sensory processing ability, the appropriately coping program should be developed and the appropriate intervention for improvement of sensory processing ability of children will be necessary.

Objective : To identify the effect of intensive sensory integration therapy through 5 days camp programs for children with dyspraxia Methods : A comparison of quantitative date and qualitative description between before and after sensory integration therapy camp described adaptative response of children and individual home-based program was designed and therapist educated parents about it. Results : The problem of control and apraxia which children have was improved rather than before camp and adaptive response increased. Conclusion : Follow-up study is needed to observe and investigate the effect of continuous treatment after camp participation.

Objective : Korean Academy of Sensory Integration(KASI) planned and executed sensory integration Therapy Camp to serve intensive sensory integration program for children with the sensory integrative dysfunction, to support their family with parent’ education and home programs, and to suggest practical guideline for therapists through individual supervision and demonstrations. Methods : The camp was held during 5days in the children’s center for developmental support that set up sensory integration tools. The camp executed the individual and group interventions that consisted of 7 children with sensory integrative dysfunction, especially dyspraxia and 7 therapists who manage them and 6 supervisors. Results : Children which served the intensive intervention showed the improved adaptive responses during the camp and their parents reported the satisfaction degree of the camp program was 83%. Their therapists also had a chance to understand the broader sensory integrative interventions through the supervision. Conclusion : To provide the clients for qualitative sensory integration service, the camp must be programmed that children with the sensory integrative dysfunction can service the intensive sensory integration program and their therapists can actually experience reeducation individually through supervision and demonstrations.
