The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between areal factors of urban characteristics in Seoul and its air quality by using the efficiency analysis of DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis). DEA was applied in this study to measure the power of the influence of the areal factors on the air quality for three years from 2008 to 2010. The analysis revealed that the factors have affected the air quality differently by year. In case of 2010, five factors were considered as significant, whereas one for 2008 and two for 2009 were significant. This means that the influence of the spatial factors on NO2 has been growing larger than the other factors. So the land-use policies of city and district government become more important to reduce NO2 emission. The results of DEA for 2010 will be useful for the local governments to establish the policies.

The purpose of the study is to identify land use characteristics which have influence on residents' mental health. Land use and housing types indicators including green areas and parks were selected by analyzing the related environment and health researches. Research database for every variable from 33 neighborhoods in Jeonju city were established through National Health Insurance Corporation, where is available for getting mental and behavioral disabilities (F code) expenses. The relation between those indexes and mental health were analysed. The findings of this study are as follows : First, the higher price area like apartments and raw houses the residents lived in, the more expenditure of F-code was paid. It could be interpreted by the relatively high frequency of medical treatment and interests on the health. Second, the more green area except park were there, the more F-code expenditure was given, which could be explicated with the spatial co-relation between location of green area and apartments of Jeonju city. It was very high, and apartment element's affect on the F-code was much more than the green zone. Third, the nearer to park were the residents, the less F-code expenses was paid.

The purpose of this study is to analyse factors influencing social exclusion perception with regard to layout of apartment housing. The multinominal response logit model is employed as the empirical analysis for this study. The results of this study are summarized as follows; First, most households prefer to live in segregated communities rather than in mixed communities. Second, the probability of household°Øs preference for the segregated communities will be higher as level of education becomes lower, housing size becomes bigger, and the intention of living in public rental housing in the future becomes less. Those who have children over 20 or no child prefer segregated communities to mixed communities other things being equal.

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) has emerged as a promising alternative for sustainable communities by creating compact and walkable environments using convenient and efficient public transport systems. TOD is recognized to reduce people°Øs dependence on personal cars for mobility and to help make vibrant and livable communities. In Korea, however, is still a lack of research on the standard of TOD planning and design. In this study, a set of TOD elements and standards suitable for Korean public transportation environments is proposed based on those used in the United States where automobile oriented transportation systems are more dominant than public transportation as in Korea. Several unique components of Korean TOD elements and standards considering Korean transportation policies and land-use standards are also developed based on comparative study between the U.S. and Korean public transportation environments.

Korean cities are composed of many basins involving rivers and flood plains. This thesis investigates flood-damages in Seoul during one hundred years, analyze prototypes of them, and tries to find needs for managing them. Focused for environmental sector, the urban physical planning area is needed utterly self-finishing on natural circulation system, and is needed strictly confidential land use based on the environmental capacity. How to relate urban land use with preventing flood-plain and using water-resource and preserving waterquality? The solution is in planning basins. On planning basins, public investments could be efficient in water management administration. It is necessary for water policy not defensive reactive measures but positive prevention on urban space, and that shows necessity of urban basins plannig.
