The Great Train Express, so called GTX introduced recently, is considered very high ripple effect in terms of metropolitan urban structure and user behavior of transport systems. At the moment, the first factor to be reviewed is public transport nodes and development density which are planning elements for TOD to succeed the Great Train Express project. In this study, density of railway station (including the GTX) is analyzed by hierarchical. It is showed that the development density has been gradually declined according to high capacity rail services and in order of Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi. The study also suggests TOD implementation strategy of metropolitan area in Korea.

Metropolitanization has been explained by several conceptual constructs such as functional connectivity between urban center and fringe areas or urbanization of fringe areas. The phenoemenon can be made of all constructs or just one of them and this mechanism may differ by region. Although this difference may reveal the unique characteristics of Korean metropolitanization, there is little reasearch to address it. Based on the Korean official data, this study analyzes the regional variation of metropolitanization for four Korean large cities: Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu and Busan-Ulsan. The major findings are as follows. First, urbanization constructs may be overestimated, because its change has not been closely related with other constructs. Second, the pattern of functional connectivity has a great regional variation. Some regions show strong connectivity for commuting and population, and other regions have a well-developed industrial network. Third, the relationship between connectivity and centrality also differs by region. This may be resulted from different economic and industrial strucure. As for the cause of this regional variation, there should be more research in the future.

The purposes of this paper are two-folds. First, the study summarizes the history of the urban policy of Korea since the Japanese colonial period. Secondly, on the basis of the characteristics of the urban policy by decades, it presents policy implications associated with a future-oriented urban policy. The urban policy in the 1960’s and 1970’s was defined as the period of establishing the institutional framework and completing the national and urban infra-structual projects, respectively. During the period of 1980’s and 1990’s, the focuses of the urban policy are concentrated on the issues of deregulation and equity instead of regulation and growth. Since 2000’s, urban resident’s diverse desires, such as participation, amenity, public design, etc are reflected to implementing the urban policy. For the betterment of the future-oriented urban policy of Korea, it should be emphasized that the convergence among existing urban policies is necessary since most of the urban areas transferred to the technologically as well as sociologically based network in the future.

The present residential space of korean is still not so different as traditional one. Because the residential space has been mainly designed by men that has more economic and political power than women. In recent days, however, the value of women is more recognized and the policies for women are shown a lot. Even so, the real residential space does not reflect it well. So far, Korean residential policies have been focused on supply-oriented and confined women to live only in residential space. So the policies should be improved to consider more share for women in that space. In conclusion, the forthcoming policy-making processes for residential space are needed for women to participate and search for inconvenient factors by themselves and, hence, the residential space can retain more gender-equality in coming days.
