This study compares and analyzes the cultural branding strategies of two French private art institutions, the Fondation Louis Vuitton and the Pinault Collection. Cultural branding is defined as a long-term process through which the symbolic value and experience of art and culture shape the identity, image, and cultural authority of both cultural institutions and their founding entities. The analysis focuses on institutional naming and founders, architecture and space, collections and exhibitions, cultural patronage and public programs, and the circulation of cultural value. The findings show that the Fondation Louis Vuitton extends the cultural sphere of a corporate brand through newly constructed architecture and international exhibitions, whereas the Pinault Collection institutionalizes the collector’s name and connoisseurship through the adaptive reuse of historic architecture and the reinterpretation of its collection. In both cases, cultural contributions coexist with a dual structure in which the cultural authority generated by the institution is linked to the reputation of its founding entity.

This paper traces how the toy (joujou), as a single object, shifts its conceptual function across the genealogy running from Baudelaire through Benjamin to Didi-Huberman. No study has yet examined, as an integrated genealogy, how Baudelaire’s aesthetics of destruction is taken up by Benjamin’s historico-philosophical concept of the image and then deepened by Didi-Huberman into a morphological theory of the image. Accordingly, the discussion proceeds in three stages. First, it shows that in Baudelaire the destruction of the toy is at once a cognitive impulse toward the soul (âme) of the thing and a catastrophe exposing the soul’s absence. Second, it examines how Benjamin reconfigures this question, where the toy—bound to childhood memory and repetition, commodity and survival—becomes the archetypal apparatus of the dialectical image moving from fragment to constellation, clarified alongside his toy collecting during his stay in Moscow. Finally, it considers how Didi-Huberman, through the phenomenology of the kaleidoscope and Boltanski’s Personnes, reconstructs this genealogy into an ethics of secularized memory and a theory of the montage-image. Across all three thinkers, the toy performs a common structure: the double movement of disassembly and reassembly, through which the soul emerges not as a substance hidden inside the object but as something generated in the act of recombining scattered fragments—not a noun but a verb.

This study examines how colonial economies produced material value and how those histories are reconfigured in Kapwani Kiwanga’s sisal works and Trinket, the installation project presented at the Canada Pavilion of the 2024 Venice Biennale. It combines a review of economic history, botanical history, and material culture studies with formal analyses of the works and their exhibition spaces. Sisal became an export commodity through the reorganization of land, labor, processing facilities, and transport networks in East Africa. By contrast, conterie, small Venetian glass beads, acquired different economic and cultural values as they moved through trade networks and entered local practices of exchange, adornment, ritual, and status. Kiwanga reorganizes these distinct histories through different material and spatial forms. Sisal appears as loose, layered fiber surfaces and porous boundaries, whereas conterie is accumulated into transparent architectural surfaces and combined with other traded materials in the Transfer series. These installations do not directly reproduce plantation space or historical exchange values. Instead, they rearrange materials beyond their conventional commodity forms, allowing the histories of production, movement, use, classification, and exhibition to resonate with viewers’ spatial and perceptual experience. This comparison demonstrates that material value is relational rather than inherent in the material itself.

Max Beckmann (1884–1950) was a prominent German artist who developed a distinctive body of work. His experience during the First World War brought him face to face with anxiety of human existence. Under the Nazi regime, he lost his professorship and the institutional foundation that had supported his artistic career. He went into exile in the Netherlands in 1937 to escape Nazi persecution and later moved to the United States in 1947. Despite these repeated displacements, Beckmann continued to develop his distinctive artistic vision in each new environment. By the late twentieth century, the concept of diaspora had expanded beyond dispersion caused by political persecution or forced displacement to encompass diverse experiences of migration and settlement, adaptation to new environments, and the reconstruction of identity. From this broader perspective, Beckmann’s life and paintings can be understood through a diasporic lens. Accordingly, this study adopts the expanded concept of diaspora as a framework for interpreting Beckmann’s paintings. Based on this framework, it examines the diasporic tendencies in his paintings from three perspectives: the visual expression of exile and existential anxiety, the representation of solitude and liminal existence, and the sublimation of existence through art and self-identity.

This study aims to analyze the conditions under which visitor experience is formed in contemporary international biennials and the significance of that experience. The Venice Biennale and documenta in Kassel are examined as reference cases for understanding the institutional development of international exhibitions and the educational turn in curating, while the analysis focuses on visitor survey data accumulated over multiple editions of the Gwangju Biennale. John Dewey’s theory of experience provides a philosophical perspective, and Falk and Dierking’s Contextual Model of Learning serves as the primary analytical framework. The findings indicate that visitor experience at the Gwangju Biennale is formed through the intersection of personal, sociocultural, and physical contexts, including visit motivations, relationships with companions and interpretive staff, exhibition spaces, and historically and culturally significant places in Gwangju. In particular, the physical context encompasses the social memories and cultural contexts embedded in Gwangju’s urban spaces and historical sites. Survey responses concerning the understanding and enjoyment of contemporary art, repeat attendance, and intentions to revisit and recommend the Biennale indicate positive perceptions of the Gwangju Biennale and the possibility of a sustained relationship with it. The significance of visitor experience at the Gwangju Biennale lies in the formation of conditions that enable visitors to interpret their own experiences and construct meaning through their relationships with artworks, people, and places. This study contributes to international biennial research by extending its focus to visitor experience and by specifying the physical context in terms of urban space and sense of place.

This study aims to reexamine the formation, development, achievements, and limitations of the 1995 Kwangju Unification Art Festival ANTI KWANGJU BIENNALE, commonly known as the “Anti-Biennale,” which was organized in response to the establishment of the first Gwangju Biennale in 1995, within the broader context of changes in Korean society and the art movement in Gwangju during the 1990s. Unlike previous studies, which have primarily assessed the Anti-Biennale in terms of its criticism of power, politics, and capital, or its incorporation into institutional structures, this study focuses on the internal circumstances of the Gwangju–Jeonnam Artists’ Community, the critical concerns of the participating artists, their commitment and solidarity, and the changing social and cultural environment following democratization. The year 1995 marked a period in which local autonomy became fully established and Korean society entered a new phase characterized by democratization, globalization, and localization. Drawing upon the memory of the May 18 Democratic Movement and the specificity of Gwangju as a place, the Gwangju Biennale functioned as a cultural policy initiative promoted by the local government to strengthen the city’s international profile and cultural status. In contrast, the Anti-Biennale was led primarily by local artists who had participated in the Minjung art movement and emphasized Gwangju’s historical identity as well as the social and practical role of art. It constituted both a critical artistic practice directed at the cultural-political and institutional character of an international art festival led by the state and local government, and an art movement that combined the historical memory accumulated in the region since the May 18 Democratic Movement with the political orientation of Minjung art. Based on previous studies, contemporary newspaper articles and critical writings, archival materials related to the Gwangju–Jeonnam Artists’ Community, and oral history interviews with individuals involved in the event, this study examines the background and development of the Anti-Biennale, its participants and achievements, and its subsequent process of institutionalization. The analysis demonstrates the limitations of interpreting the later appointment of major Anti-Biennale figures to leading positions at the Gwangju Museum of Art and the Gwangju Biennale, or the organization of the second Unification Art Festival with support from the Gwangju Biennale, merely as “rewards from power” or “accommodation to institutional authority.” Such changes need to be understood in relation to the financial and organizational conditions confronting the local art community at the time, the sustained commitment and sacrifice required of participating artists, and the broader historical circumstances in which the social momentum of the Minjung art movement was undergoing transformation after democratization. The Anti-Biennale was a significant art movement independently and autonomously organized by local artists through the convergence of Gwangju’s sense of place, the historical memory of the May 18 Democratic Movement, and the political character of Minjung art. In particular, the participation of numerous artists who set aside their individual artistic practices and activities in pursuit of a shared goal represents an important case in which the values of solidarity and praxis cultivated by Minjung art in the 1980s continued into the mid-1990s. However, because the movement failed to secure a stable financial foundation and organizational structure, its critical momentum could not be sustained. Its subsequent incorporation into the Gwangju Biennale in the form of special exhibitions also weakened its autonomy and potential for further expansion. The Anti-Biennale should therefore be understood as part of a process of structural transformation through which Minjung art sought to redefine its relationship between movement-based practice and institutional structures within the changing social environment following democratization. In particular, at a time in the mid- to late 1990s when the capacity to mobilize artistic movements around shared political and social agendas was gradually weakening, the Anti-Biennale can be regarded as a representative example of collective practice in Korean Minjung art and as a significant historical moment in which its political and aesthetic capacities were brought into concentrated expression.

This study analyzes the condensed temporality of modernist painting, in contrast to the narrative temporality of premodern painting, through the “dialectic of space and time” formed by the color field and the zip in Barnett Newman's work. The spatial relation between the continuously expanding color field (a Chronos-like duration) and the zip that ruptures yet constitutes it (a Kairos-like event) is converted, through the viewer's movement and pause, into a temporal relation of duration and interruption. Before a large canvas, the viewer constitutes the zip already passed as a remembered past, the zip now faced as the “now,” and the zip not yet reached as an anticipated future. This crossing of the spatialization of time and the temporalization of space structurally corresponds to Walter Benjamin's “dialectics at a standstill” (Dialektik im Stillstand), in which past and present crystallize into a constellation. Through analyses of three of Newman's paintings, this study argues that the temporality of his work deepens from an individual, perceptual present, through an embodied constellation, into a historical and allegorical time. It thereby reconsiders Newman's painting—long confined to formalist flatness or the sublime's present —as a pictorial temporal structure in which the viewer's bodily performance and historical awareness intersect.

This study analyzes cases of AI innovation at the Rijksmuseum and proposes an “Appropriate AI Technology” adoption strategy that reconfigures their underlying principles to suit the conditions of regional art museums. With an average of only around three curatorial practitioners per institution, regional art museums suffer a chronic personnel shortage in which the human and material resources required to build sophisticated AI systems are fundamentally lacking. Drawing on E. F. Schumacher's concept of “intermediate technology,” this study explores an alternative path that, rather than imitating capital-intensive technology, repurposes the achievements and open data of leading institutions as assets of the regional museum. From three Rijksmuseum cases—its Linked Open Data-based data governance, Operation Night Watch, and its barrier-free service—the study distills three governance principles: the prior establishment of internal data standards, the prioritization of a clearly defined purpose, and the conversion of existing curatorial assets into digital resources. Building on these, it directly implements three practical strategies that require neither specialist developers nor a dedicated budget—an AI docent application, NotebookLMbased educational materials, and open-data-driven art-world trend-report automation—thereby exploring their technical feasibility and confirming that all can be operated at the cost of a standard general-purpose AI subscription. This study argues that the key to narrowing the digital divide facing regional art museums lies not in the scale of resources but in the creativity of curatorial planning, and it proposes AI literacy as a core professional competency for the curatorial practitioners of regional art museums.

The purpose of this study was to examine the roles of city branding and festivals in the development of European Capitals of Culture, to analyze the characteristics of arts education that became established positively in local communities, and to identify the implications. To this end, regions containing unique local environments and artistic elements in Linz and Graz, Austria, known as cities of art in Europe, were selected, and art education, festivals, and their direction were analyzed in terms of the unique cultural and artistic elements that emerged as the cities grew and developed and the role of local residents. Artistic expression is realized through experiential approaches that emphasize the value of tradition as well as novelty and challenge. Recognizing that festivals are a form of community culture, the role of arts education must be reorganized with regard to methods of expression and enjoyment as cultural preferences change over time. Therefore, true city branding is achieved when festivals in cultural cities are organized within the local context and contribute to the mutual growth of arts education, the lives of residents, and the wider community.
