This study analyzes cases of AI innovation at the Rijksmuseum and proposes an “Appropriate AI Technology” adoption strategy that reconfigures their underlying principles to suit the conditions of regional art museums. With an average of only around three curatorial practitioners per institution, regional art museums suffer a chronic personnel shortage in which the human and material resources required to build sophisticated AI systems are fundamentally lacking. Drawing on E. F. Schumacher's concept of “intermediate technology,” this study explores an alternative path that, rather than imitating capital-intensive technology, repurposes the achievements and open data of leading institutions as assets of the regional museum. From three Rijksmuseum cases—its Linked Open Data-based data governance, Operation Night Watch, and its barrier-free service—the study distills three governance principles: the prior establishment of internal data standards, the prioritization of a clearly defined purpose, and the conversion of existing curatorial assets into digital resources. Building on these, it directly implements three practical strategies that require neither specialist developers nor a dedicated budget—an AI docent application, NotebookLMbased educational materials, and open-data-driven art-world trend-report automation—thereby exploring their technical feasibility and confirming that all can be operated at the cost of a standard general-purpose AI subscription. This study argues that the key to narrowing the digital divide facing regional art museums lies not in the scale of resources but in the creativity of curatorial planning, and it proposes AI literacy as a core professional competency for the curatorial practitioners of regional art museums.
