Jeongeup Gosaburi Fortress (Historic Site No. 494) is a stone-built mountain fortress enclosing the eastern and western peaks of Seonghwangsan Mountain, and it has long been discussed in relation to the Jungbangseong, one of the Five Regional Fortresses of Baekje. However, several issues remain unresolved, including the date of its initial construction, the主体 responsible for its construction, its relationship to Jungbang Gosaseong recorded in the Geography section of the Samguk Sagi, and the archaeological character of the southeastern wall and gate remains identified in recent excavations. This study reexamines the construction techniques, gate structures, and diachronic transformation of Gosaburi Fortress through a synthesis of excavation results, a review of previous scholarship, and a comparative analysis of fortresses of the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla periods in the Jeonbuk and Buyeo regions. The results indicate that the fortress walls of Gosaburi Fortress should be understood as those of a complex fortress that was initially constructed in the Three Kingdoms period and subsequently rebuilt and repaired throughout the Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon periods. This interpretation is based on the combined evidence of basal preparation, the structural relationship between the wall body and the inner earthen fill, earthen reinforcement layers and supplementary reinforcement facilities in front of the outer wall, as well as stratigraphy and excavated artifacts. In particular, the southeastern wall identified in the 10th excavation provides key evidence for reconstructing the construction techniques and transformation process of the fortress, since its basal preparation, wall-body structure, posthole rows, earthen reinforcement layers, and later rebuilding phases are relatively well preserved. The gate remains also reveal a differentiated gate system within the same fortress. The north and west gates can be classified as offset open-top gates, whereas the south gates (the 5th and 9th excavations) are interpreted as straight open-top gates. Among them, the south gate uncovered in the 9th excavation is especially important because it preserves both the initial construction phase and the later rebuilding and closure processes. Constructed on an L-shaped cut foundation with inward-stacked dressed rectangular stones and an inner-packed structure, this gate later underwent rebuilding in the Goryeo period and was eventually blocked and converted into a wall with a water outlet in the Joseon period. These features suggest that the gate system of Gosaburi Fortress was closely related to defensive control of movement and visual screening. Individual construction elements such as L-shaped cutting, bedrock trimming, horizontal coursing, inward stacking, and the geuraengi technique are found not only in Baekje fortifications but also in Unified Silla stone mountain fortresses; therefore, no single feature alone can determine the date of initial construction. Nevertheless, when the structural composition of the walls and gates, Sabi-style artifacts, and documentary evidence are considered together, the initial construction of Gosaburi Fortress can reasonably be understood as closely related to the stone fortification tradition of Sabi-period Baekje. Accordingly, Gosaburi Fortress is best interpreted not as a fortress of a single period, but as a long-duration fortress characterized by multilayered rebuilding and reuse over time. Although it may have functioned as a transportation, defensive, and administrative stronghold linked to the Baekje Jungbangseong system, its precise identification and historical status still require further investigation.

The Stone Gate Ritual (Seokmunje, 石門祭) of Judong, Muju, is a village ritual that has functioned as a street rite since the formation of the village. The stone gate located on both sides of the old road were deified and venerated as the Stone Gate Divine General(Seokmun Sinjang, 石門神將), to whom prayer was offered for the prosperity of the villagers and the well-being of the community. The Stone Gate Ritual constitutes a form of rock worship and monumental megalithic belief, and it functioned in a complementary relationship with the Mountain God Ritual (Sanshinje, 山神祭). Judong Seokmunje is not only the sole Stone Gate Street Rite in the Jeonbuk region, but it is also a very rare example nationwide. At present, the Stone Gate Ritual is performed only in a formalized manner, making it difficult to approach its original form. Fortunately, ritual prayer text (chukmun, 祝文) that have been transmitted since the Joseon Dynasty remain extant, allowing for a detailed understanding of both the objects and contents of the ritual invocations. In particular, this study reveals that the village religious system was structured as a dual framework composed of the upper shrine deity(Sangdangsin, 上堂神) and the lower shrine deity(Hadangsin, 下堂神), as it has functioned as a street rite along with the Mountain God Ritual. Among the street rites investigated to date, no case comparable to the Stone Gate Ritual of Judong village has been identified. Accordingly, this village belief holds significant academic value as an exceptionally rare example for which ritual prayer text traceable to the Joseon Dynasty are preserved. It is hoped that, in the future, the Stone Gate Ritual and the Mountain God Ritual of Judong, Muju, will be recognized for their systematic structure and cultural value as intangible cultural heritage.

Song Byeong-seon, who was active during the late Joseon Dynasty, was a ninth-generation descendant of Song Si-yeol(宋時烈) and a great Confucian scholar who, together with his younger brother Simseokjae(心石齋) Song Byeong-seon(宋秉珣), founded and shared the Yeonjae School, a branch of modern Confucianism. Song Byeong-seon was also a scholar outside the mainstream who devoted his life to study, writing, and teaching, striving to preserve the lineage of Confucianism and the ways of the world(世道). After the age of 50, Song Byeong-seon built Seobyeokjeong(棲碧亭), a mountain study, on Deogyu Mountain in Muju(茂朱) with the purpose of deepening his path of self-purification(自靖路線), which took the form of “entering the deep mountains with scriptures in his arms(抱經入山).” At the same time, Song Byeong-seon named the existing natural valleys of Deogyu Mountain Mugegugok and attempted to carve stones(刻石), and by giving names to each of the nine bends, the Hwengcheon(橫川) area came to be transformed into a space for humanities. Behind this was a result of being deeply conscious of the precedent set by Zhu Xi(朱熹), who established the Wuyi Hermitage(武夷精舍) on Mount Wuyi(武夷山) in China, as well as the legacy of his ancestor Song Si-yeol, who recreated this in Hwayang-dong(華陽洞), Goesan(槐山). Meanwhile, on the very day he erected Seobyeokjeong Pavilion in the third verse, Song Byeong-seon composed a poem titled “Seobyeokjeong”, overwhelmed by the fulfillment of his long-held wish. Later, his uncle Song Geun-su(宋近洙), Song Byeong-seon, and the magistrates of Muju, Jo Byeong-yu(趙秉瑜) and Park Seong-yang(朴性陽), recited poems in response to the original rhyme(元韻) of “Seobyeokjeong”, thereby establishing the foundation of Mugegugok literature that praised the path of self-purification. Meanwhile, after Song Byeong-seon passed away, he emerged as the leader of the Yeonjae school and formed the Sohyeon-gye(㴑賢契) to inherit Yeonjae's scholarship. Furthermore, under the leadership of the descendants of the Eunjin Song clan, the folding screen “Mugye Gugokdo(茂溪九曲圖)”, which uses the nine bends as its poetic theme, was produced; this serves as evidence of the circumstances under which Gugok literature began to develop.

There are many casualties during the Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894 in Jeonbuk region, and as a result, activities of the early righteous armies are difficult to find. However, the Jeonbuk righteous army movement began to develop in earnest following the Taein Righteous Army led by Myeonam Choi Ik-hyeon at Museong Seowon in Taein in 1906. The Taein Righteous Army received strong support from local residents, including the occupation of the Taein government office. However, it was disbanded in Sunchang in order to avoid a direct confrontation with government troops. Although this righteous army movement lasted only for a short period, Choi Ik-hyeon’s exile to Tsushima Island and his martyrdom inspired nationwide anti-Japanese sentiment and, in particular, served as an important foundation for the spirit of the righteous army struggle in the Jeonbuk region. During the Late Righteous Army Period, the influence of the Taein Righteous Army spread throughout Jeonbuk. Prominent Righteous Army leaders of this period, including Yi Seok-yong of Imsil, took up arms in the Righteous Army War under the direct or indirect influence of the Taein Righteous Army. Yi Seok-yong organized and led the Honam Righteous Army Headquarters, while Jeon Hae-san commanded his own righteous army unit and carried out fierce armed resistance against the Japanese military. In addition, Confucian scholars and local leaders in areas such as the Jangheung Go clan of Gochang, Im Byeong-chan of Okgu, members of the Yi Gyu-hong family of Iksan, Yang Yun-suk of Sunchang, and members of the Go Heung-yu family of Wanju participated in the righteous army movement, expanding the foundation of the anti-Japanese struggle. The Jeonbuk righteous army movement was not merely a military resistance movement. Despite severe repression and numerous sacrifices inflicted by the Japanese military, the struggle continued, and after the loss of national sovereignty, its spirit was inherited through movements such as the Independence Army Headquarters (獨立義軍府) and the Paris Declaration of Korean Independence (Paris Jangseo Movement, 巴里長書運動). However, despite the historical significance of the Jeonbuk righteous army struggle, related research and commemorative projects remain insufficient. In the future, it is necessary to preserve and promote the history and spirit of the Jeonbuk righteous armies through the excavation and restoration of related historical sites, the expansion of memorial facilities, the establishment of a Jeonbuk Righteous Army Memorial Hall, and the revitalization of commemorative organizations. This will be a meaningful task in reexamining the righteous army movement, together with the Donghak Peasant Revolution, as one of the major pillars of the history of modern and contemporary national movements in Jeonbuk.

Miss Willie Burnice Greene (1919-1960), a single female missionary of the Korea Mission of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, worked in both Kunsan and Jeonju Mission Stations as a missionary for evangelical and biblical education dedicated to women. This article first analyzes the missionary requirements that Green must meet before being deployed to the mission fields, namely, acquiring Korean language, adapting to culture, and studying the Bible education policy for women. Subsequently, this article analyzes the evangelism and Bible education in the Kunsan Mission Station period (1919-1940) conducted by the missionary in the background of the socio-cultural positions of women in mountainous area, rural area, and islands in Jeollabuk-do. In addition, this article examines the evangelism and Bible education she gave to women as a member of the Jeonju Mission Station (1947-1960). Through this, this article summarizes the missionary characteristics of Green. 1) She was familiar with the cultural situations of women in Jeonbuk in the 1920s and 30s, 2) Greene evangelized peoples of North Jeolla Province including Piando and Kokunsan Islands as a female missionary, 3) Greene built a dormitory-equipped Bible training center for Bible students, and shared flower seeds, and coat and clothing with Bible women and helpers. 4) Even after retirement, she donated $40,000 for building the library of Hanil Seminary at the time.

This study examines the organizational base and community activities of the Namwon Branch of Singanhoe. Previous studies on Singanhoe have mainly focused on its founding process, cooperation between nationalist and socialist forces, and debates over its dissolution. In recent years, research has expanded to local branches, but individual branch studies in the Jeonbuk region remain limited, and the Namwon Branch has not been sufficiently examined as an independent subject of research. This article analyzes the background of its establishment, organizational base, and community activities by using newspaper articles and colonial police and prosecution records. The Namwon Branch of Singanhoe was established amid the nationwide expansion of local Singanhoe branches after 1927. However, its establishment cannot be explained simply as the unilateral transplantation of the central headquarters’ policy into the region. In Namwon, there already existed the spatial and human networks of youth movements centered on the Namwon Youth League, while the Hyeongpyeong movement, local press activities, and public activities by local notables were also being carried out. The fact that the preparatory meeting for the Namwon Branch, the founding meeting of the Namwon Youth League, and the inaugural meeting of the Namwon Branch were all held at the Namwon Youth Hall indicates that the branch was established on the basis of local youth movements. After its establishment, the Namwon Branch continued its organizational activities through executive meetings and regular general meetings. It formed an executive body and departmental structure, and discussed matters such as recruiting members, collecting membership fees, preparing agenda items for headquarters meetings, electing delegates, and organizing its budget. Its action program also raised a broad range of issues, including national rights, education, labor and peasant questions, women’s issues, and the abolition of social discrimination. This shows that the Namwon Branch was not merely an informal association, but an activist organization that addressed local issues and broader social movement agendas. The community activities of the Namwon Branch were concretely expressed in its responses to local issues. It cooperated with the Namwon Youth League in investigating and responding to the Yurimdan Misconduct Incident, and raised with county authorities such issues as tuition fees at Namwon Public Common School, tuition exemptions for children from poor families, negligence by school authorities, and gravel corvée labor. In this process, the branch raised the problems of unequal educational opportunity, the burdens placed on the poor, and local authority structures, transforming individual local grievances into issues of residents’ rights and everyday burdens. It also maintained links with the Hyeongpyeong movement, contributed a donation to a famine-relief performance, and participated in discussions on promoting labor and peasant organizations. The Namwon Branch also responded to broader national issues, including the problem of Koreans in Manchuria, the Wonsan General Strike, and the strike at the Joseon Textile Company in Busan. However, these activities were continually restricted by police bans on meetings, prior censorship, prohibitions on speeches, arrests, and detention orders. Its public activities weakened markedly after the 1930 incident involving a message of encouragement to the Busan strike and the Namwon Manifesto Incident. Nevertheless, the branch did not immediately disappear. It remained within the official organizational network of the Singanhoe headquarters, although its internal meetings and decision-making functions weakened. The Namwon Branch thus illustrates how the national united-front movement took root in a county-level locality on the basis of local social movements, and how it developed through responses to local issues and the reception of broader national and social movement agendas.

This study examines how memories of Hanji production and everyday life are constituted among artisans and residents of Heukseokgol Hanji Village in Jeonju. Once a major Hanji production center, Heukseokgol closely connected workplaces, residences, production, and daily life. As industrial and urban changes weakened its production base, a gap emerged between its former lifeworld and present environment. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight artisans and long-term residents, alongside documentary research and field investigation. The data were analyzed using Giorgi’s descriptive phenomenological procedure, and the experiential themes were reorganized through van Manen’s lifeworld existentials of corporeality, spatiality, relationality, and temporality. Four themes emerged: embodied sensory labor; a lifeworld connecting waterways, alleys, workplaces, and residences; a communal order based on family division of labor and production networks; and the continued use of “Hanji-gol” amid the weakening transmission of place memory. Participants’ recollections also revealed a contrast between the period of active Hanji production and the environment transformed after industrial decline. This study interprets Heukseokgol’s place memory as an experiential structure formed through the interaction of traditional technology and the lifeworld. It suggests that the transmission of traditional technology should include the bodily senses, spatial conditions, and communal relationships that supported its practice.

This study aims to demonstrate that the manufacture of Jeonju Hanji is not merely a technical act of production, but a living form of intangible cultural heritage embodied in the complex cultural practices of a local community, where collaboration, work songs, reciprocal labor exchange, and the transmission of skills are intricately interwoven. To this end, the study examines the historical formation of the Hanji-producing community centered in Heukseokgol, Seoseohak-dong, Jeonju (formerly Pyeonghwa-dong), and analyzes its core collective practices—such as dakmuji, the making of baekdak, and the collaborative sheet-forming of jangpanji—in order to reveal that Hanji-making culture has simultaneously carried out both material production and the production of communal cultural values. The research distinguishes between and utilizes, on the one hand, the oral archive materials from the Jeonju Cultural Foundation’s village survey (2023), and on the other hand, field investigation records and documentary photographs produced directly by the researcher during the reenactment events of dakmuji conducted in 2025–2026. At the same time, it adopts theories of community culture and the concept of intangible cultural heritage as its theoretical framework, interpreting the Hanji-making process in relation to structures of social collaboration. The analysis shows that the Hanji-producing community of Heukseokgol, rooted in the tradition of the jiso (paper production offices) of the Joseon Dynasty and shaped through the papermaking training institutes and instructional workshops of the Japanese colonial period, enjoyed its heyday in the 1960s to 1980s during the post-liberation industrialization era, but gradually underwent disintegration due to wastewater issues and changes in the industrial structure. Nevertheless, through various communal practices such as the Dangsanje, the Umulje, and movements to establish a K-Hanji Village, the study confirms that past experiences of production as a livelihood are now being reconstituted as heritage memory. Furthermore, at a moment when the decision on its inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is scheduled to be made in 2026, this study seeks to discuss the intangible heritage value of Jeonju Hanji community culture and the tasks required for its sustainable transmission from the perspective of Jeonbuk Studies, a field of regional studies concerned with the placeness of Jeonju and the historical and cultural identity of Jeonbuk. In doing so, it aims to suggest ways in which regional studies can contribute to the study of traditional industrial communities.

This study analyzes the practices of the Onda-ra Art Museum, which operated in Jeonju from 1987 to 1992, through Nancy Fraser's concept of "subaltern counterpublics." Existing historiographies of minjung (people's) art have largely structured their accounts around a Seoul-centric, unilinear diffusion model, thereby rendering invisible the autonomous discourses and networks generated by provincial art spaces. This study critiques that methodological premise and repositions the Onda-ra Art Museum not as a passive site of reception but as an active agent of discourse production. Drawing on primary sources—the oral history record of Shin Hak-cheol archived in DA-Arts (recorded by Choi Taeman, 2018) and the museum director Kim In-cheol's operational report published in Munyejinheung (1990)—the analysis demonstrates how the museum performed the dual functions of a subaltern counterpublic: internally producing independent discursive vocabularies through "withdrawal and regroupment," and externally intervening in the dominant public sphere as a "training ground for agitational activities." The study further examines how state censorship and authoritarian repression transformed these performative modes, thereby extending Fraser's framework to non-liberal-democratic conditions of suppression. The findings offer correctives to the geographic premises of minjung art historiography and propose a theoretically expanded application of the counterpublic concept.
