Jeongeup Gosaburi Fortress (Historic Site No. 494) is a stone-built mountain fortress enclosing the eastern and western peaks of Seonghwangsan Mountain, and it has long been discussed in relation to the Jungbangseong, one of the Five Regional Fortresses of Baekje. However, several issues remain unresolved, including the date of its initial construction, the主体 responsible for its construction, its relationship to Jungbang Gosaseong recorded in the Geography section of the Samguk Sagi, and the archaeological character of the southeastern wall and gate remains identified in recent excavations. This study reexamines the construction techniques, gate structures, and diachronic transformation of Gosaburi Fortress through a synthesis of excavation results, a review of previous scholarship, and a comparative analysis of fortresses of the Three Kingdoms and Unified Silla periods in the Jeonbuk and Buyeo regions. The results indicate that the fortress walls of Gosaburi Fortress should be understood as those of a complex fortress that was initially constructed in the Three Kingdoms period and subsequently rebuilt and repaired throughout the Unified Silla, Goryeo, and Joseon periods. This interpretation is based on the combined evidence of basal preparation, the structural relationship between the wall body and the inner earthen fill, earthen reinforcement layers and supplementary reinforcement facilities in front of the outer wall, as well as stratigraphy and excavated artifacts. In particular, the southeastern wall identified in the 10th excavation provides key evidence for reconstructing the construction techniques and transformation process of the fortress, since its basal preparation, wall-body structure, posthole rows, earthen reinforcement layers, and later rebuilding phases are relatively well preserved. The gate remains also reveal a differentiated gate system within the same fortress. The north and west gates can be classified as offset open-top gates, whereas the south gates (the 5th and 9th excavations) are interpreted as straight open-top gates. Among them, the south gate uncovered in the 9th excavation is especially important because it preserves both the initial construction phase and the later rebuilding and closure processes. Constructed on an L-shaped cut foundation with inward-stacked dressed rectangular stones and an inner-packed structure, this gate later underwent rebuilding in the Goryeo period and was eventually blocked and converted into a wall with a water outlet in the Joseon period. These features suggest that the gate system of Gosaburi Fortress was closely related to defensive control of movement and visual screening. Individual construction elements such as L-shaped cutting, bedrock trimming, horizontal coursing, inward stacking, and the geuraengi technique are found not only in Baekje fortifications but also in Unified Silla stone mountain fortresses; therefore, no single feature alone can determine the date of initial construction. Nevertheless, when the structural composition of the walls and gates, Sabi-style artifacts, and documentary evidence are considered together, the initial construction of Gosaburi Fortress can reasonably be understood as closely related to the stone fortification tradition of Sabi-period Baekje. Accordingly, Gosaburi Fortress is best interpreted not as a fortress of a single period, but as a long-duration fortress characterized by multilayered rebuilding and reuse over time. Although it may have functioned as a transportation, defensive, and administrative stronghold linked to the Baekje Jungbangseong system, its precise identification and historical status still require further investigation.
