There are many casualties during the Donghak Peasant Revolution of 1894 in Jeonbuk region, and as a result, activities of the early righteous armies are difficult to find. However, the Jeonbuk righteous army movement began to develop in earnest following the Taein Righteous Army led by Myeonam Choi Ik-hyeon at Museong Seowon in Taein in 1906. The Taein Righteous Army received strong support from local residents, including the occupation of the Taein government office. However, it was disbanded in Sunchang in order to avoid a direct confrontation with government troops. Although this righteous army movement lasted only for a short period, Choi Ik-hyeon’s exile to Tsushima Island and his martyrdom inspired nationwide anti-Japanese sentiment and, in particular, served as an important foundation for the spirit of the righteous army struggle in the Jeonbuk region. During the Late Righteous Army Period, the influence of the Taein Righteous Army spread throughout Jeonbuk. Prominent Righteous Army leaders of this period, including Yi Seok-yong of Imsil, took up arms in the Righteous Army War under the direct or indirect influence of the Taein Righteous Army. Yi Seok-yong organized and led the Honam Righteous Army Headquarters, while Jeon Hae-san commanded his own righteous army unit and carried out fierce armed resistance against the Japanese military. In addition, Confucian scholars and local leaders in areas such as the Jangheung Go clan of Gochang, Im Byeong-chan of Okgu, members of the Yi Gyu-hong family of Iksan, Yang Yun-suk of Sunchang, and members of the Go Heung-yu family of Wanju participated in the righteous army movement, expanding the foundation of the anti-Japanese struggle. The Jeonbuk righteous army movement was not merely a military resistance movement. Despite severe repression and numerous sacrifices inflicted by the Japanese military, the struggle continued, and after the loss of national sovereignty, its spirit was inherited through movements such as the Independence Army Headquarters (獨立義軍府) and the Paris Declaration of Korean Independence (Paris Jangseo Movement, 巴里長書運動). However, despite the historical significance of the Jeonbuk righteous army struggle, related research and commemorative projects remain insufficient. In the future, it is necessary to preserve and promote the history and spirit of the Jeonbuk righteous armies through the excavation and restoration of related historical sites, the expansion of memorial facilities, the establishment of a Jeonbuk Righteous Army Memorial Hall, and the revitalization of commemorative organizations. This will be a meaningful task in reexamining the righteous army movement, together with the Donghak Peasant Revolution, as one of the major pillars of the history of modern and contemporary national movements in Jeonbuk.
