This study aims to demonstrate that the manufacture of Jeonju Hanji is not merely a technical act of production, but a living form of intangible cultural heritage embodied in the complex cultural practices of a local community, where collaboration, work songs, reciprocal labor exchange, and the transmission of skills are intricately interwoven. To this end, the study examines the historical formation of the Hanji-producing community centered in Heukseokgol, Seoseohak-dong, Jeonju (formerly Pyeonghwa-dong), and analyzes its core collective practices—such as dakmuji, the making of baekdak, and the collaborative sheet-forming of jangpanji—in order to reveal that Hanji-making culture has simultaneously carried out both material production and the production of communal cultural values. The research distinguishes between and utilizes, on the one hand, the oral archive materials from the Jeonju Cultural Foundation’s village survey (2023), and on the other hand, field investigation records and documentary photographs produced directly by the researcher during the reenactment events of dakmuji conducted in 2025–2026. At the same time, it adopts theories of community culture and the concept of intangible cultural heritage as its theoretical framework, interpreting the Hanji-making process in relation to structures of social collaboration. The analysis shows that the Hanji-producing community of Heukseokgol, rooted in the tradition of the jiso (paper production offices) of the Joseon Dynasty and shaped through the papermaking training institutes and instructional workshops of the Japanese colonial period, enjoyed its heyday in the 1960s to 1980s during the post-liberation industrialization era, but gradually underwent disintegration due to wastewater issues and changes in the industrial structure. Nevertheless, through various communal practices such as the Dangsanje, the Umulje, and movements to establish a K-Hanji Village, the study confirms that past experiences of production as a livelihood are now being reconstituted as heritage memory. Furthermore, at a moment when the decision on its inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is scheduled to be made in 2026, this study seeks to discuss the intangible heritage value of Jeonju Hanji community culture and the tasks required for its sustainable transmission from the perspective of Jeonbuk Studies, a field of regional studies concerned with the placeness of Jeonju and the historical and cultural identity of Jeonbuk. In doing so, it aims to suggest ways in which regional studies can contribute to the study of traditional industrial communities.

본 연구는 전주한지 제조가 단순한 기술적 생산 행위를 넘어, 협업, 노동요, 호혜적 노동 교환, 기술 전수 등이 어우러진 지역 공동체의 복합적 문화실천으로서 살아 있는 무형문화 유산임을 규명하는데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 전주 서서학동흑석골(구평화동) 일대를 중심으로 한 한지 생산 공동체의 역사적 형성 과정과 닥무지, 백닥만들기, 장판지 협업 초지 등 핵심 집단 실천을 분석하여, 한지 제조 문화가 물질적 생산과 공동체적 문화재 생산을 동시에 수행해 왔음을 드러낸다. 연구는 전주문화재단 마을조사(2023)의 구술 아카이브 자료와, 연구자가 2025～2026년에 직접 수행한 닥무지 재현 행사 현장 조사·문헌 촬영자료를 구분하여 활용하는 한편, 공동체 문화론과 무형문화 유산 개념을 이론적 틀로 삼아 한지 제조과정을 사회적 협업 구조와 연계해 해석하였다. 분석결과, 흑석골 한지 생산 공동체는 조선시대 지소(紙所)의 전통과 일제강점기 제지전습소·제지강습회를 거쳐, 해방 이후 산업화 과정속에서 1960～80년대 전성기를 구가하였으나, 오·폐수 문제와 산업구조 변화로 점차 해체되는 과정을 겪었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 당산제, 우물제 및 K-한지마을 조성 움직임과 같은 다양한 공동체 실천을 통해, 과거 생업으로서의 생산경험이 오늘날 유산의 기억으로 재구성되고 있음을 확인하였다. 나아가 유네스코인류무형문화유산 등재 여부가 2026년에 결정될 예정인 현시점에서, 전주한지 공동체 문화의 무형유산적 가치와 지속가능한 전승과제를, 전주라는 장소성과 전북의 역사·문화적 정체성을 다루는 지역학으로서의 전북학의 관점에서 논의함으로써, 지역학이 전통산업 공동체 연구에 기여할 수 있는 방향을 제시하고자 한다.
