This study focused on the image of 'modern culture' consumed in the process of transforming modern architecture with a strong colonial image into modern cultural heritage, and analyzed the intention of the subject producing 'modern culture' and the understanding method of tourists who consume it. Gunsan City is commercializing past times with nostalgia for the purpose of revitalizing tourism, and the commercialized image of ‘modern culture’ is reproducing local history and memories. And as memories of colonial history's exploitation and oppression are combined with the fun and enjoyment of tourist destinations, tourists' memories of 'modern culture' are being reconstructed into an unstable concept, competing with dual and mixed memories. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the layers of cultural memory through which meaning is appropriated and reconstructed by analyzing the clashes of meaning and perception and mixed memories encountered in the spaces and images where ‘modern culture’ is created.
This study was conducted to explore the linkage and mutual development direction between UNESCO World Heritage sites and regional studies from the perspective of regional development. The structure of the research is as follows. First, an analysis of the current status of World Heritage sites located in Jeonbuk state was performed, and implications were drawn. The result showed that all World Heritage sites in Jeonbuk state are composed of 'serial heritage,' with linkage to other regions being an important characteristic. In Chapter 3, the status of World Heritage site utilization in Jeonbuk state was examined by looking into 'cultural heritage utilization projects,' 'popularization events,' and 'World Heritage-related education.' Additionally, Chapter 4 investigated the positive impact of World Heritage sites on regional revitalization by examining the trends of World Heritage tourists using the 'The Korea Tourism Knowledge & Information System.' Analysis revealed that World Heritage sites located in the region play a significant role as tourist hubs and that the influence of these sites has decreased around the pandemic period. As an alternative to this trend, it was confirmed that it is necessary to convey the intrinsic appeal of the heritage to the public, rather than being fixated on the 'World Heritage' brand. The study drew the following implications. First, the mutual development direction between regional studies and World Heritage activation was set as a three-stage process: ‘Research on regional studies – Empathy with local residents – Globalization of regional culture.’ Additionally, it was confirmed that a system is needed to appreciate the value of World Heritage sites as regional resources, rather than focusing solely on the World Heritage brand itself.
This study analyzes the transition of the regional balanced development discourse into a discourse of regional extinction from the perspective of discursive institutionalism, focusing on the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province. In the early 2000s, Jeollabuk-do actively embraced national balanced development policies and sought to position itself as a regional growth center. However, by the mid-2010s, the effectiveness of these policies had diminished. Since 2016, as policies to counter rural decline have gained momentum, discourses of regional antibiosis and rural decline have merged. In this context, Jeollabuk-do underwent a policy discourse process that realigned development strategies with local characteristics. This transformation illustrates how policy discourse is reconstructed through discursive struggles between central and regional actors and highlights the need to reframe the discourse of regional extinction by fostering locally-driven policy narratives.
The tomb data of the Three Kingdoms period in the eastern part of Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province were reviewed by water system, and the process of Gaya, Baekje, and Silla's entry was examined. Gaya tomb data are found in the Jangsu area of the Geumgang River and the Unbong Plateau in the Namgang River area from around 400 years ago. Until the first half of the 6th century, the Gaya forces in the Jangsu area and the Unbong Plateau developed by contrasting large-scale tombs. The Gaya-gye stone-lined tombs Shrine surveyed in the Seomjingang River basin is related to Gaya located in the Jangsu area or Unbong Highlands, and appeared through temporary advancement of these forces or exchanges with local forces in the Seomjingang River basin. Baekje tombs were mainly identified in the Namwon region, the water area of the Geumgang River in the north and the water area of the Seomjingang River in the south. Baekje, Gaya, and Silla tombs are found in the area of Yongdam Dam, the upper stream of the Geumgang River, and from the first half of the 6th century at the latest, the confrontation between the Geumgang River is confirmed. Since the first half of the 6th century, the number of Baekje earthenware managers in the Gaya tombs has been increasing in the Jangsu area, and although it is temporary, it is possible to estimate the advancement of Baekje. In the first half of the 5th century, stone tombs corresponding to the first half of the 5th century were investigated in the administrative-ri tombs of the Unbong Highlands, but there was no continuity, and later Stones-chamber tombs influenced by Baekje were identified in Yugok-ri and Durak-ri tombs. In the upper and lower reaches of the Seomjingang River, Namwon Saseok-ri and Chochon-ri tombs, horizontal Stones-chamber Tombs the late 5th century were identified. Among them, the Chochon-ri tombs are the largest Baekje tombs identified in the Seomjingang River basin and are believed to have been contrasted in Baekje's provincial bases after the Woongjin period. The ancient tombs of Silla were identified in Muju and Jinan areas north of the Geumgang water system and in the Unbong Plateau, the Namgang water system. The period when Silla earthenware flowed into the ancient tombs in the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do was in the first half of the 5th century, and it appeared through exchanges with local forces, not direct advancement of Silla. In the late 5th century, the Silla ancient tombs, including the Daedae-ri tombs, were contrasted, and the Jangsu area is believed to have been included in the Silla area after the late 6th century. Gaya and Silla earthenware were mixed and excavated from the Bongdae-ri tombs in the Unbong Highlands, the Namgang River system, and the full-scale construction of the Silla ancient tombs began only in the late 6th century. The stone chambers were built in Yugok-ri and Durak-ri, the central tombs of the Gaya forces, and the construction of the Gocheong was stopped after the second quarter of the 6th century, and it is possible to estimate the extinction of Gaya and the development of Baekje and Silla. In the Seomjingang River water system, the Silla tombs are located in Wolpyeong-ri, Namwon, which is divided into around the 7th century, and it is believed to be related to Silla's westward advance.
This article reviewed the construction method of ancient fortresses recently confirmed in eastern Jeollabuk-do. Through this, it was revealed that the fortresses of Gaya, Baekje, and Silla all exist in the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do. The eastern part of Jeollabuk-do is a mountainous region and is the origin of the Geumgang River, Seomjingang River, and Namgang River. Historically, Gaya existed in the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do from the 5th to the mid-6th century. They developed through active exchanges with neighboring countries through the medium of iron. Also, served as a military buffer between Baekje and Silla. However, when Gaya collapsed in the mid-6th century, Baekje and Silla fiercely competed to occupy the area. The most representative events are the Battle of Amak Fortress and Ghazam Fortress, which are recorded in the Samguksagi. Amak Fortress is located in Ayeong-myeon, Namwon-si, Jeollabuk-do. In 602, Baekje mobilized 40,000 soldiers to attack Amak Fortress in Silla, but failed. With this battle, Silla took control of the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do and built a number of fortresses. In addition, it secured control of the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do. Baekje built Gaksan Fortress in 605 to prepare for the attack on Silla. Baekje, which escaped from the aftermath of the Battle of Amak Fortress, attacked Gajam Fortress in Silla in 611. Until now, the location of Gajam Fortress has been seen as Anseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, Geumsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, and Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do. In consideration of the literature records and the construction method of the fortress, the author decides the location of the head castle to be the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do. In this case, it is highly likely that many battles between Baekje and Silla during the King Mu of Baekje were fought in the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do. Baekje, which won the Battle of Ghazam Fortress in 611, attacked Amak Fortress again in 616. Although it does not convey the victory or defeat of the battle, it is highly likely that Baekje won, considering that it entered the Sokham Fortress in Hamyang-gun in 624. Feeling a crisis, Silla regained control of the upper Geumgang River by crossing Deoksanjae Pass in 618 and restoring Gajam Fortress. Baekje, which captured six fortresses, including the Sokham Fortress in 624, attacked Gazam Fortress again in 628. Although the victory or defeat of this battle is unknown, considering that Baekje attacked Musan Fortress (Muju, Jeollabuk-do), Gammul Fortress, and Dongjam Fortress (Gimcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do) in 647, it is highly likely that Baekje captured it before 647. The core of this paper is that both Amakseong Fortress and Gajam Fortress, where Baekje and Silla were fiercely opposed in the 7th century, were located in the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do. The battle between the two regions was to take control of the old Gaya land by securing a stronghold in the upper reaches of the Geumgang River (Gazam Fortress) and a key point in the Namgang River basin (Amak Fortress). One of the reasons why Baekje and Silla were at odds was that the eastern part of Jeollabuk-do was a large-scale iron producing area.
In 889, Gyeon Hwon became independent centered on the southwestern coast. In the process, he secured Gwangju and established himself as a single power. It has been understood that the process of forming Gyeon Hwon’s power developed from the southwestern district to Gwangju and then Jeonju in that order. This was largely due to the description in the Wangryeok of the Samguk Yusa that Gyeon Hwon first established his capital in Gwangju in 892, and in the geography section of the Goryeosa that Gyeon Hwon called it “Later Baekje” after he attacked and occupied it, and soon after moved the capital to Jeonju. However, there are records in the Silla Annals of the Samguk Sagi that suggest that he used Jeonju as his base and expanded Gwangju and its southeastern districts into his power, so it seems that some consideration is needed regarding this. Gyeon Hwon's Baekje revival and the establishment of a state centered on Jeonju were formalized only after he made Jeonju the capital in 900. He made Jeonju the capital, using the historical awareness of Mahan-Baekje that had been passed down since the Goryeo Dynasty as a justification. And at some point after that, he began using the title of the monarch, Daewang, and established the reign title, Jeonggae. This can be said to be an expression of his pride as the Great King, the monarch of an independent state, and the master of the entire Korean Peninsula.
「Wansan Dohyeong(完山圖形)」is estimated that has been painted in 1900 during King Gojong’s promotion of the holy land for Wansan. It is the most notable feature of this map what a memo as ‘The residential site for American(美 國人占屋處)’ on the right lower side of the mountain, and also it includes detailed numbers as ‘3 tiled and 5 thatched houses(瓦家三處 草家五處)’. Jangseogak, where it is stored, explains that it is “a pictorial map created around the castle of Jeonju in Jeolla-do and the residences of American missionaries.” This study focused on 「Wansan Dohyeong」from the perspective that it is an important data for confirming the historical situation and settlement history of the American Southern Presbyterian missionaries who established a Station in Jeonju. The period when the early Protestant missionaries arrived in Korea was a period of political and diplomatic turmoil in the country, and in particular, the period of preparation for the settlement of Jeonju coincided with the period before and after the Donghak Peasant Revolution. Therefore, the history of early Protestantism is not a matter of interest in fragmentary religious resources, but rather a clue to examining the process of forming modern culture through education and medical missions and the history of popular reform from a world historical perspective. In this report, the location of the early Jeonju Station pioneered by American Southern Presbyterian missionaries is marked on a modern map based on the geographical interpretation implemented in 「Wansan Dohyeong」. In addition, the history of the establishment of the residential space prepared at Jeonju Station and the use of the buildings for each purpose were identified and clarified through various records (reports, letters, diaries, etc.) of the missionaries. Furthermore, the results of the spatial arrangement created immediately after the relocation to Hwasan were confirmed and organized. This study is important meaning had examined the process of establish time and space from the beginning to the end of the early Protestantism’s Station on Wansan in Jeonju.

This study aims to analyze the mythological spatiality and mythological imagination embedded in Simchun Sunrye by Choi Nam-seon, focusing on how these elements contribute to the formation of national identity during the Japanese colonial period. Simchun Sunrye is not merely a travelogue; rather, it serves as a historical and cultural project that reinterprets the mythological origins of Korea by linking Jeonbuk’s natural landscape and historical sites to the foundational narratives of Korean mythology. Choi Nam-seon highlights Mt. Moak and Dosolcheon in Byeonsan as mythological spaces where Bal, representing solar worship and luminous spirituality, converges with Sal, embodying Buddhist reincarnation and vital energy. Furthermore, through his re-reading of Samguk Yusa, Choi establishes Jeonbuk’s historical spatiality by linking it to key figures such as Jinpyo, Choe Chi-won, Wonhyo, and Uisang, thereby emphasizing Jeonbuk as the central stage of national narratives. Additionally, Choi incorporates sites like Barisan, Gomso, Beomseom, and Seondol, connecting them to Dangun mythology, Maitreya beliefs, and Buddhist cosmology, thus solidifying Jeonbuk’s status as the sacred origin of Korean mythology. This study reveals that Choi Nam-seon utilized mythological spatiality as a crucial strategy for shaping national identity, and positions Simchun Sunrye as a significant case of mythological nationalism in colonial discourse.
Namwon-eupseong(邑城) was rebuilt in 1597, when the Imjin War broke out, peace negotiations broke down, and right before the Jeongyu war(丁酉再亂) broke out again. Namwon-eupseong, which has a very important historical meaning, has recently been excavated and restored. Recently, the local government where the eupseong is located operates various cultural events and focuses on expanding the value of the town in terms of utilization beyond preservation. However, focusing on the socio-economic aspects, the historicality of the eupseong is not properly given and limits are exposed. In particular, Namwon-eupseong Fortress has a clear limitation in using the wall in a restored state of about 200M. It is time for various attempts to overcome these limitations. First of all, it is necessary to examine the limitations and possibilities of the use of Namwon-eupseong and give it historicality based on this. However, Namwon, where the eupseong is located, has various historical and cultural resources. Accordingly, the historical properties of Namwoneupseong and Namwon' were analyzed and a utilization plan was suggested by combining them with special historical and cultural resources of the region. For the use of Namwon-eupseong, it is necessary to give historicality from various perspectives rather than simply giving historicality to honor the spirit of 'patriotic' as a historic site of war. Recently, cases of giving the meaning of 'coexistence and symbiosis' in relation to war relics are increasing. Namwoneupseong is also thought to be able to give the meaning of 'peace for coexistence and coexistence' from a Trans-national point of view beyond the spirit of 'patriotic', which is a National History point of view. Accordingly, Namwoneupseong and Namwon can give historicality as a city of 'resistance and peace'. This will be possible through exchanges with others beyond us. Therefore, measures through connection with Namwon-si and the city that signed a sisterhood alliance were presented together.
This study aims to extract and clarify the cultural characteristics of the Later Baekje period through artifacts excavated from Iksan, a region where discussions on cultural changes from the Three Kingdoms period through the Unified Silla period to the early Goryeo period have been relatively abundant, as well as from Jeonju, the capital of Later Baekje, from the late Unified Silla to the early Goryeo period. Ultimately, this study seeks to explore the significance and status of Iksan as an ancient city during the Later Baekje period and, furthermore, to examine the relationship between Jeonju, the capital of Later Baekje, and Iksan in terms of urban structure and characteristics. The types and quantities of wadang (roof-end tiles) related to Later Baekje found in Jeonju and Iksan may vary depending on the circumstances of the investigation. However, the general trends and patterns of these changes do not differ significantly. From the first half of the 9th century, wadang that imitates the style of the former Baekje began to appear gradually, and between the late 9th and early 10th centuries, this trend intensified, with the style no longer merely mimicking Baekje but evolving into a unique cultural representation of Later Baekje. These trends can be divided into the "Early Later Baekje Style" and the "Late Later Baekje Style." In contrast to wadang, myeongmunwa(roof-end tiles with inscription) related to Later Baekje found in the Jeonju and Iksan regions shows notable differences, particularly in the names of temples or regions. In Jeonju, an inscription on a myeongmunwa with the name 'Jeonju' (全州) was found intact, which had been used since the 16th year of King Gyeongdeok (757), replacing the former Baekje-era name 'Wansan'(完山). In contrast, in Iksan, myeongmunwa with inscriptions "Geummajeo"(金馬渚), the name used during the Baekje period, are continuously found, associated with words such as "seong" (城) or "gwan" (官), both for temples and fortresses. Additionally, at the 3rd Garam of Daegwansa Temple Site in Iksan, the word "gwan" (官) was added to the name "Daegwansa" (大官寺), the name used during Baekje. In the end, Jeonju reflects a "Silla" system, while Iksan retains a "Baekje" system, representing a dual structure. This structure is also evident in the "Wanggung Pagoda" at Daegwansaji Temple Site in Iksan, as mentioned earlier. Ultimately, the Later Baekje state established by Gyeonhwon can be seen as a nation that embodies "Baekje" on the foundation of "Silla.“ Therefore, the capital of Later Baekje can be regarded as being composed of two central cities: Jeonju, the political center, and Iksan, the religious center. In this regard, this study suggests that the place name '完山' (Wansan), which was the capital during the Later Baekje period, might have been adopted as a name with significant implications, including the area '金馬渚' (Iksan), beyond just the administrative district of '全州' (Jeonju)
