This study focused on the image of 'modern culture' consumed in the process of transforming modern architecture with a strong colonial image into modern cultural heritage, and analyzed the intention of the subject producing 'modern culture' and the understanding method of tourists who consume it. Gunsan City is commercializing past times with nostalgia for the purpose of revitalizing tourism, and the commercialized image of ‘modern culture’ is reproducing local history and memories. And as memories of colonial history's exploitation and oppression are combined with the fun and enjoyment of tourist destinations, tourists' memories of 'modern culture' are being reconstructed into an unstable concept, competing with dual and mixed memories. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the layers of cultural memory through which meaning is appropriated and reconstructed by analyzing the clashes of meaning and perception and mixed memories encountered in the spaces and images where ‘modern culture’ is created.

본 연구는 식민지 이미지가 강한 근대건축물이 근대문화유산으로 변모하는 과 정에서 소비되는 ‘근대문화’ 이미지에 집중해, ‘근대문화’를 생산하는 주체의 의도 와 이를 소비하는 관광객의 이해방식을 분석하였다. 군산시는 관광활성화를 목적 으로 과거의 시간을 노스탤지어와 함께 상품화하고, 상품화된 ‘근대문화’ 이미지는 지역의 역사와 기억을 새롭게 재생산하고 있다. 그리고 식민지 역사의 수탈과 억압 의 기억이 관광지의 재미와 즐거움으로 결합되면서 관광객의 ‘근대문화’에 대한 기 억은 이중적이고 혼재된 기억으로 경합되면서 불안정한 개념으로 재구성되고 있 다. 따라서 본 연구는 ‘근대문화’가 만들어지는 공간과 이미지에서 부딪히는 의미와 인식의 충돌 그리고 혼재된 기억들을 분석함으로써 그 의미가 전유되고 재구성 되는 문화적 기억의 층위를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다.
