The purpose of study is to understand the home management strategy to cope with rapid changing environments and to verify that how personal value orientation affect home management strategy. The research results are summarized below. First, variables that affect the value orientation of Korean urbanite are sex, area of dwelling, degree of information using and degree of stress recognition in case of material orientation, degree of information using in case of environmental orientation, academic career, sex, degree of information using, degree of stress recognition in cases of fate control orientation, number of children, sex, degree of information using in case of equilibrium orientation, sex, degree of stress recognition in case of present orientation and academic career, degree of stress recognition in case of individualistic orientation. Second, value orientation variables that affect overall home management strategy of Korean urbanite are material orientation, environmental orientation, fate control orientation and individualistic orientation. Third, variables that affect overall home management strategy of Korean urbanite are age, academic career, degree of information using, degree of stress recognition, perception level of living relative to others, environmental orientation and fate control orientation and it is shown that degree of information using is domineering variable.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesijed a causal model of sujective perception of contribution to the family economy utilijing system theory. The major findings of this study were as follows. 1) The mean score of respondent’s personal subsystems were 3.62 out of 5. And the family solidarity was affected by the following variables in order : housewives’ age, income, type of occupation, degree of resourcefulness recognition, job satisfaction, control orientation, and information utilization. 2) The mean score of managerial subsystems were 3.68 out of 5. And The financial management of housewives was affected by the following variables. in order: housewives’ type of occupation, degree of resourcefulness recognition, control orientation, information utilization. 3) The mean score of housewives’subjective perception of Economic Contribution to the Family was 3.36 out of 5. The sujective perception of contribution to the family economy of the employed housewives were greater than unemployed housewives. 4) It was found that managerial subsystems had mostly effected on sujective perception of economic contribution to the family.

The purpose of this study were to clarify the concepts, origin, and roles of standard, to diagnose the standard developed in contemporary family living, and to suggest desirable standard for effective home management. Five prevalent standards found in managing family resources were convenient-oriented standard, others-oriented standard, material-oriented standard, individual-oriented standard, and frugal-oriented standard. The changes of social and cultural environments and family resources affecting these standards and some problems resulted from these were discussed. Considering undesirable effect of old standards on resource management, family relationship, quality of life, and society in general, these old standards should be replaced by compromise convenient-oriented standard, self-oriented standard, being-oriented, joint-oriented standard, and new frugal-oriented standard. Some recommendations for future research, publicity, and policy were suggested.

This study was designed to examine the decision-making and family life satisfaction of the urban middle-aged housewives from the ecological perspective. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ecological enviornment variables(ie, natural physical-biological environment·social-cultural environment·human-built environment) and their dicision-making on their family life satisfaction. Also, it is to provide some fundamental information that helps to elevate the family life satisfaction of the unban middle-aged housewives. The subjects of this study were 305 housewives living in Seoul and Inchon area, whose age was from 40 to 59. The significant results were as follows: 1) Their decision-making was affected by the following variables in the order of health condition, fate-control orientation, husband’s support, monthly family income and the perception of the adequacy of household income. 2) The ecological environment variables which had an influence on family life satisfaction were the perception of the adequacy of household income, husband’s support, fate-control orientation, health condition and educational level. 3) From the regression analysis, the model was found to be highly significant, accounting for 44% of the variance. Thus, husband’s support was the strongest predictor variable.

This paper gropes for advisable home management principle, named “philosophy of household management(PHM)”, which is presented to home managers. Philosophical thought about household can give fundamental under-standing about family circumstances. So home manager can get better judgement about family things and house affairs. In that sense, this paper is expected to provide family members with the ground of thought: how to help each members’ self-completion, to make better relationship among family members as well as between families and society, and to manage all environmental resources. As the paper researches new field of home management, it presents academic significant of PHM. Then, it explains why ‘Han consciouseness’-the native philosophy of Korea-is adequate for foundation theory of PHM, and what ‘Han philosophy’is. In conclusion, the paper argues necessity of view for home management, and discusses (1) view of human being, (2) view of economic activity, and (3) view of natural environment as family resources.

The purpose of this study is to review the concept of home-based work, introduce the activities of American home economists on home-based work and propose the tasks of family resource management for home-based work. Home-based works is defined as the work which generates income at home and classified 3 types: home-based business, employed home-based work and homework. The activities of American scholars are reviewed focusing on the Coorperative Regional Research Project, NE-167, entitled "At-Home Income Generation: Impact on Management, Productivity and Stability in Rural/Urban Families"and the participants of the project. The purpose of this study is to explain changes in the mode of labor brought abut with the advance of information society and to suggest policies for the success of teleworking. It is likely that more and more people in advanced countries will be involved in some form of teleworking office workers use computers for handling dat, which is then transmitted over a telecommunications like to client or employer located some distance away. Though teleworking is becoming populer rapidly, it still has many problems to solve. In the conclusion, the paper suggests some measures to be taken for a successful teleworking system. (1) The first step is to establish a special team for the teleworking pilot. And probably the telework center will be most useful type for the pilot. (2) Some protections for teleworkers should be designed against discrimination in employment and occupation. (3) Some institutional arrangements such as tax benefits and incentive system are required for the success of teleworking system. (4) Maintaining competitiveness-faster services and lower cost-should be the first priority. (5) There should be a retraining and education system in the national level for the teleworkers to learn new IT applications.

The purpose of this study was to compare the performance mode of housework related to daily meals. The data for 214 Korean couples living in Seoul and 136 Japanese Couples in Tokyo were collected using structured questionnaires and time diaries. The performance mode of housework were analyzed according to the employment status of wives. The results were as follows; Generally Koreans and Japanese wives had similar patterns in the time use of meals preparation and dish washing. In both nations Husbands seldom participated meals preparation, wives did most part of the work. But Japanese husbands of full-time employed wives spent more time on meals preparation than their Korean counterparts did. Korean wives received more help from other family members and paid labor, on the contrary Japanese wives purchased more ready-made goods for food preparation.

Work and family life affect each other. Especailly in a corporate-centered society the impact of work on the family is very strong. Organigational sexrole culture is used not only as a method of business management, but also as a style of family living. The Purpose of this study was to analyze an effect of occupation and organizational sexrole culture of husband on the family life. Data for 214 husbands were gathered from the structured questionnaire and time diary. The major findings of this study were as follows; (1) According to the occupation, organizational sexrole culture of husbands is very different. (2) The occupation and organizational sexrole culture of husbands have an important effect on their life time structure. (3) The occupation and organizational sexrole culture of husbands effect on their participation rate of household labor. These results suggested that husbands’ occupation and organization sexrole culture have a significant effect on the family life.

The purpose of this study was to examine how much the cost of marriage ceremony has increased according to the economic growth. The relationship between marriage expenditures and other comparison variables such as per capital GNP, monthly income, consumer price index was particularly examined. All the money values were adjusted by consumer price index. Data from the Central Committee for Promotion of Saving were used in this study. The results of this study follow. First, nominal and actual total outlay of marriage ceremony has continuously increased. Total marriage ceremony cost was positively correlated with the housing price so that bridegroom’s outlay were greater than that of bride’s one since bridegroom was more likely to have the responsibility for the price of new couple’s house. Second, it was found that increased percentage rate of marriage ceremony cost was greater than that of national economic growth. The total marriage expenditure was about 10 times as much per capital income in 1990. Third, it was revealed that housing cost increased three times from 1990 to 1995, and marriage ceremony expense was accordingly increased twice during the same periods. Such trends tend to increase continuously. Last, the marriage cost percentage to monthly income called marriage expenditure share increased by 1990 and then decreased. Such a decreasing trend can be explained by the increased amount of income partly due to the higher wage rate compared to other conditions since 1990.

Given the dramatic increase in the percentage of married women working in clercial occupations and the inflexibility of work commitments for employees working in this domain, this paper investigates the division of household labor between married female clerical workers and their husbands, and their sources of external help. The total housework time of couples, the percent of total housework done by husbands, and a scale measuring the wife’s perception of the frequency with which her husband does specific household tasks are all used to measure the division of household labor between couples. Data for 143 couples were gathered from using structured questionares and the time dairies that included one weekday and one weekend day. The findings of this study are as follows; 1) The couples receive substantial support in housework from their mothers. 2) Wives spend an average of 23 hours and 26 minutes per week on household labor, whereas husbands spend an average 7 hours and 7 minutes per week. Husbands do an average of 20.9% of all housework done by the couples. Wives typically perceive that their husbands are not frequently participating in a variety of household tasks(mean = 2.88 on a 5-point Likert scale where 1=never and 5=always). 3) Multivariate analysis reveal that working hours is negatively related to while the presence of child under 6 years old is positively related to total housework. Time availability variables(e.g. working hours and the presence of child under 6 years old) and relative resource variables(e.g. the rate of wife’s income on that of husband) are related to the percent of total housework done by husbands. The sex-role attitude variables are related to the wife’s perceptions of the frequency with which her husband does specific household tasks.
