This study analyzes the effects of the three types of flexible work arrangements (part-time, flexitime, and reduced working hours for childcare) available in Korea on work-family conflict, facilitation, and job satisfaction for married working women ages 15-49. The study employs a panel analysis based on the first to the fourth data from the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women & Families (KLoWF). The major results are as follows. First, the availability of part-time jobs and reduced working hours to facilitate childcare is significantly related to work-family conflict for married women. If a married woman is employed in a part-time position or if reduced working hours for childcare are available, the conflict within the family caused by the job is reduced. Second, none of the three types of flexible work arrangements have a statistically significant influence on work-family facilitation for married women. Third, the availability of reduced working hours for childcare has a positive effect on the job satisfaction of married women. In conclusion, flexible working hours for women who are raising children are the main factor in reducing the negative effect of a job on a woman's family life as they contribute to work and family compatibility.

This study aims to investigate the financial soundness of Korean households and its effects on the retirement preparation of these households. The sample consisted of 1,031 households selected from the 4th Korean Retirement and Income Study (KReIS) by the National Pension Research Institute in 2012. The empirical results are as follows. According to the logistic regression model, the statistically significant factors affecting the retirement preparation of Korean households are gender, occupation type, residence, satisfaction with economic condition, and type of financial soundness—sound households or insolvency-risky households. In other words, more female-headed households and households with higher levels of occupation are less likely to prepare for retirement. The households that are more likely to prepare for retirement are those that are lived in metropolitan areas as opposed to the countryside; further, households that are more economically sound are also more likely to prepare for retirement. In particular, sound households and insolvency-risky households are less likely to prepare for retirement compared to liquidity-risky households.

Increasing interest in family problems caused by social environment changes has elevated the importance of strong family policy. That is why Framework Act on Healthy Families has enacted in 2004 in Korea and it marked the 10th anniversary of establishing the law. This study finds out the meaning of enacting the law and an academic field of Family Resource Management through reviewing and analyzing the studies on the healthy families from 2000 to 2013 year in Journal of Korean Family Resource Management Association. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, we divide research themes into three parts: policy, practice(I)(center management), practice(II)(program development & efficiency), specialist area. The research trends have most focused on the issue of practice(II), that is, program analysis and development, contents review, because of the settlement of delivery system after the early of law establishment. But it is needed to rethink research themes because it has been dealt with not academical researches on theoretical basis but practical ones, for example, program development on Healthy Families Center and the tendency still lasts until now. Second, more than half of research methods have been concentrated on contents analysis and about 70% of research objects are focused on the center program. It needs to adopt various research methods and research objects. Lastly, it is necessary to make an academic identity clear that can be faithful to Family Resource Management Studies.

This study focused on the adjustment of family living culture in relation to women who have immigrated for marriage. Specifically, it sought to determine how Vietnamese immigrant women understand and adapt to the culture of family life in Seoul, Korea. The investigation was conducted from 2 May to 30 May 2014, with 28 Vietnamese immigrant women as participants. Personal, family, social, and cultural factors affecting family life and culture were considered. It was determined that Vietnamese women can easily adapt to life in Korea to provide; the results of the material analysis are described below. First, Vietnamese immigrant women are satisfied with their economic life in Korea. In Vietnam, women have the right to marry Korean men if they want to. Vietnamese women are encouraged to marry want to marry a Korean man. Because they are satisfied with the present marriage. Second, migrant women learn to adapt to South Korean culture and food. However, cultural differences between a woman’s husband and mother-in-law can become a source of conflict. Third, children of multicultural families easily accept Vietnamese people, since they are educated to do so through their Vietnamese mothers Vietnamese woman wants to teach their children the Vietnamese food and culture. Fourth, the Vietnamese immigrant women also participate in multicultural family support centers and communities. They want to become productive members of society through employment opportunities in South Korea. Fifth, the cultural and welfare policies of the government should be carried on so that migrant women are able to study cultural adaptation. This case study examined difficulties that Vietnamese immigrant women have in adjusting to life and culture in Korea. The findings could be used as a resource to help Vietnamese women living in Korea.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of preparation for old age on the life satisfaction, and the mediating effect of productive activities on the relationship between preparation for old and life satisfaction among the old age in Korea. The subject for this study is 226 older adults who participated in the work・fare program of community welfare centers. The collected data were analyzed with SPSS WIN(ver.18.0) program, and frequency analysis, descriptive analysis, multiple regression, and Sobel test were utilized. The result revealed that productive activities has a partial mediating effect between preparation for old Age and life satisfaction. Based on these findings, the theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

The Purpose of this study was to explore the generational conflicts around adult children’s taking care of elderly parents and grandparents’ caring for grand children. The results of this study were as follows. First, the child care responsibility of the parents’ generation is much more intense than that of the parent care responsibility of the children’s generation. Second, the norm of parent care has changed from being the responsibility of the eldest son to being the responsibility of all of the children, which had led to an increased probability of conflicts between the two generations due to the differences in expectation and reward. Third, the bilateralization of the kinship increases the responsibility of women in taking care of their families, which leads to an increase in conflict among women of different generations. Finally, the generational conflicts related to family care appear across different social classes.

This study focused on issues of relative importance to the work and family life of married men. The work was carried out to determine, when men are in any category, how to increase their satisfaction with their work and family life. Data from 896 married men with their youngest children under 18 years of age was collected and analyzed. Cluster analysis was performed to classify the categories depending on the relative importance of work as compared to family life. I obtained four types relating to the relative importance of work compared to family life. The results are as follows. First, the score of subjective balance which was perceived by the men was slightly higher than the normal range, at 3.27 points. Second, work-family negative spillover is bigger than family-work negative spillover. On the other hand, family- work positive spillover is bigger than work-family positive spillover. Third, in the category in which the difference is largest between the relative importance of work and family life, the men crave the value of nonwork. It seems that in order to bring a particular gravity to work, there is a possibility that the areas outside of work will be suppressed. Also, in this category, both the satisfaction of family life and job satisfaction were low; this will be a point to consider when discussing the problem of the balance of work and family.
