Increasement of total cost during distribution chain requires packaging standardization to reduce extra handling and delays at transshipment point. In Korea, high valued agricultural products to export are most often shipped by air freight. Fresh flowers, in particular, the need to set package standard for air palletization are strongly recommended. This study tried to find an optimum standard dimensions for export packages. After extensive research on combinations of various flower dimensions, package dimensions and pallet sizes, we found that 96 inches pallet was most adequate for international air freight. Based on the results, new 40 standard package dimensions were introduced and stacking efficiencies were calculated.

합성수지의 식품 포장용 사용 적합성을 판단하기 위한 가장 기본적인 평가항목인 총이행량에 대한 유럽연합의 법규들을 살펴보았다. 유럽연합은 Council Directive에서 총이행량 실험에 필요한 모사용매의 종류, 용출 온도 및 시간을 각각 규정하고, 이들 세가지 조건을 조합하여 용출 실험하도록 하고 있으며, 이러한 조건들은 실제 접촉하는 식품의 종류 및 사용조건에 따라 비교적 자세히 세분화되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러나 지방성 식품 포장재에 대한 일부 실험 방법의 경우, 현실적으로 시간과 노력이 많이 들고 오차가 크다는 단점이 있어, 이를 대체할 수 있는 실험조건을 별도로 설정하고 있다. 또한 식품의 종류에 따라 reduction factor를 도입함으로써 지방성 식품 모사용매를 사용할 경우 과장될 수 있는 용출결과를 별도로 보정하도록 하고 있다.
The EU regulation of overall migration which is the cornerstone of the limitation to ensure that plastic materials and articles intended to contact with foodstuffs are fit for the intended application, was reviewed. In Council Directives, it was established in detail what simulants, contact times and temperatures are to be used in migration tests performed under standardized conditions. In some cases, conventional conditions for substitution test was provided, because of technical reasons. Moreover, a reduction factor ranging from 2~5 may be applied depending on the foods, because olive oil which is simulant for fatty foods, is severe solvent compared with most fatty food.

Active packaging is one of the innovative concepts which actively change the condition of the packaged products. Active packaging technique controls the environment inside the packaging in order to extend the shelf life of the product and improve its quality or safety. Active packaging are based on major contents of scavenging concepts, releasing concepts, and other active packaging concepts such as removal or indicating systems. In recent years, experimental developments using active packaging concepts between polymeric packaging materials and the contact surfaces of food products are widely studied in order to make extensive commercial applications. Well-developed packaging markets in USA, Japan, and Europe are already being successfully applied in active packaging concepts. This paper reviews the concepts of active packaging and current information of active packaging technologies. The status of domestic technologies in active packaging were analyzed.

Measurements of accelerometer levels transmitted from the floor in commercials truck shipments were carried out transportation of 300 Kg-load from Gyungbu Highway(Waegouan-Seoul) to 88 Highway(Gwangju-Daegu). Different characteristics were observed the values measured the vibration levels with directions in the two Highway`s as a function of road condition and truck speed. The results showed that the vibration levels of the Gyungbu Highway is much higher than those of the 88 Highway. A following analysis on the obtained values was used to get the acceleration spectral density (ASD) and power spectral density (PSD). For the entire transit route, the results showed that the level of vibration to vertical direction was significant effects for damaging the products carried compared to other directions such as longitudinal and transverse. This paper provides an updated history of measured characteristics of vibration levels for highways using mainly in domestic area.

Nanotechnology is playing an increasingly important role in the development on most areas of science and technology. Because of its potential of providing novel performance at the nanoscale, the nanotechnology can influence a wide range of applications such as information, energy, environment and biology, all essential for socioeconomic development in the near future. In the packaging industry, the main applications of nanotechnology are (1) to enhance durability, (2) improve gas and oxygen barriers of raw materials for films and packaging, (3) create new functional sensors, and (4) lengthen shelf life for the packaged food quality and will also help in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Nanotechnology is growing in an international interactions which accelerate in science, education, and industrial R&D. Government, industries and the business sector in Korea have shown a strong ambition towards the development of nanotechnology for the future. Meanwhile, a strategic investment in packaging area is much smaller compared to supporting research and development (R&D) of various major research areas. This article were reviewed the status and trends of current packaging research and development activities using nanotechnology in Korea, USA, Japan, and other international nations.

Cushioning systems, which are cushion material and its designed configuration, are important to protect fragile items since they act as buffers between the impact force and the fragile product. As cushioning materials, several plastic foams are commonly used in industry. However, the utilization of the plastic material has been causing a solid waste problem and pollution. Thus, as an alternative cushion material to the plastic foams, a corrugated cushion, which is considered environmentally friendly and cheap material, was put into drop tests and its impact shock attenuation was investigated. Flat and free drop data were recorded and compared to the dynamic shock of EPS cushion. In addition, the mathematical model of the shock attenuation of the corrugated cushion was developed. The result showed that the corrugated cushion gave an excellent protection for items that were subjected to the limited number of drops. There was no significant difference of the shock absorbing ability between the EPS and corrugated cushions. Energy density model of cushioning material successfully explained the mechanical behavior and fatigue of the corrugated cushions.

이집트에서 생산되는 토마토의 신선도 유지를 위해 기능성 MA 필름을 사용하여 박스단위(10 kg)로 포장하여 상온에서 7일간 저장하면서 품질변화를 살펴보았다. 저장 7일후 중량 감모율은 MA구가 대조구에 비해서 50% 정도 중량 감소가 적었으며, 적정산도와 가용성 고형분의 함량 역시 저장기간 동안 MA구에서 높게 유지되고 있었다. 비타민 C의 변화는 필름 포장구인 MA구에서 그 변화 정도가 대조구에 비해 적게 나타나 이집트산 토마토의 품질유지를 위해 기능성 MA 포장재 활용이 가능할 것으로 사료된다.
To investigate the effect of functional MA film packaging on tomatoes produced in Egypt packed 7 kg corrugated paperboard box during 7 days of storage at room temperature, the weight loss, titratable acidity, soluble solid content(SSC, $^oBrix$), vitamin C and the rate of decay were measured. The weight loss in 0.06 mm functional MA film was 1.5%, but was 3% in non-packed tomatoes after 7 days of storage. The titratable acidity and SSC in functional MA film was kept higher than that of non-packed tomatoes and vitamin C and the rate of decay in functional MA film was changed lower than the others.
The Analysis of Heat Transfer through the Multi-layered Wall of the Insulating Package

Thermal insulation is used in a variety of applications to protect temperature sensitive products from thermal damage. Several factors affect the performance of insulation packages. Among these factors, the thermal resistance of the insulating wall is the most important factor to determine the performance of the insulating package. In many cases, insulating wall consists of multi-layered structure and the heat transfer through this structure is a very complex process. In this study, an one-dimensional mathematical model, which includes all of the heat transfer principles covering conduction, convection and radiation in multi-layered structure, were developed. Based on this model, several heat transfer phenomena occurred in the air space between the layer of the insulating wall were investigated. From the simulation results, it was observed that the heat transfer through the air space between the layer were dominated by conduction and radiation and the low emissivity of the surface of each solid layer of the wall can dramatically increase the thermal resistance of the wall. For practical use, an equation was derived for the calculation of the thermal resistance of a multi-layered wall.

Bing`` 체리 (P. avium L.)는 짧은 저장성을 가지는 신선 농산물로, 코팅에 의한 저장성 향상 가능성을 알아보았다. 네 종류 (Semperfresh®, calcium caseinate, chitosan, or TIC Pretested® colloid 911)의 식이성 코팅 재료를 1% 농도로 체리에 코팅 처리 한 후 2{\circ}C, 88% 상대습도 조건에서 35일 간 저장하며 코팅 물질에 따른 저장성 및 품질변화를 확인하였다. Semperfresh® 코팅은 체리의 전반적인 품질 및 저장성 향상에 기여하였는데, 무게 감소를 줄이고 표면 색변화를 억제하는 것으로 관측되었다. 키토산을 기본으로 하는 코팅은 저장 중 곰팡이 발생을 억제하는데 효과적이었다. 하지만 colloid 911 과 calcium caseinate를 이용한 코팅은 신선 체리의 저장성 향상에 기여하지 못했는데, 이들 친수성 코팅 물질의 경우, 체리의 표피층과 코팅 물질 사이의 상호작용에 의해서 체리의 자연적인 보호층인 큐티클 층이 영향을 받음으로 체리의 무게 감소가 저장 기간 중에 촉진되었던 것으로 사료된다.
Bing` sweet cherries (P. avium L.) were coated with four different coating materials at 1% concentration (Semperfresh®, calcium caseinate, chitosan, or TIC Pretested® colloid 911)and stored at 2.0{\circ}C and 88% RH up to 35 days. The influence of different coating materials on the storability of fresh cherries was investigated. Semperfresh® coatings significantly improved overall quality of fresh cherries by decreasing weight loss and improving color stability, and chitosan-based coatings were effective in controlling mold incidence. However, colloid 911 and calcium caseinate coatings did not show significant benefit in preventing quality deterioration of fresh cherry during storage, probably due to their hydrophilic nature leads to exacerbated weight loss and shriveling with the possible interactions between coating materials and cherries epidermal layers.

한국의 시유 포장은 1937년 7월부터 현재 서울우유협동조합(그 당시 경성우유동업조합)이 1홉(hob : 180 ml, 0.048 standard gallon) 유리병에 지전(paper cap) 또는 콜크마개(cork cap)로 사용한 것이 최초였다. 그 이후(1945~1972)로 2홉 유리병 360 ml도 생산되었고 마개도 철전(iron cap)이나 plastic film을 씌운 뚜겅이 관모(egret, pappus)형태로 바뀌었다. 그 밖에 우유병이 부족하면 사이다병, 맥주병 등 유색유리용기가 사용되기도 하였다. 우유생산업체는 한국에서 서울우유협동조합만이 유일하게 있다가 1964년 3월 남양유업(주)이 창립되고, 1969년 현재 해태유업(그 당시 대한식품공사)이 설립, 1971년 5월 현재 매일유업(주)(그 당시 한국낙농유업) 등 여러 업체들이 점진적으로 설립되어 각 종의 낙농제품(dairy products, dairy manufactures)이 포장되어 생산되기 시작하였다. 그리고 1971년에 서울우유협동조합에서 처음으로 삼각형 폴리 에틸렌필름용기가 사용되었고 1972년에는 남양유업(주)의 종이용기인 Tetra pak 멸균팩을 수입하여 최초 사용하였다. 1974년경부터 사각형 폴리에틸렌필름포장과 플라스틱병 용기가 처음 선보였으며, 1977년에는 종이포장인 게이블톱 카튼팩(gable top carton pack)이 서주산업(주)에 의해 최초로 소개된 후 급격히 시장점유율이 확대되었고 용량에서도 180 ml에서 200 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1,000 ml의 대형으로 서서히 바뀌었으며 그에 맞춰 소비량도 변화되었다. 그리고 파스퇴르 우유 490 ml의 포장을 1987년 9월에 국내 최초로 몸체는 고밀도 폴리에틸렌병(high density polyethylene bottle), 뚜껑은 저밀도 폴리에틸렌을 사용하였고 1992년 7월 남양유업은 다우(DOW)란 상품명으로 polyethylene병에 235g, 450g, 930g을 넣어 4각형 형태로는 최초 시판하였다.
The first packaging of Korean market milk dates back to July 1937 when Seoul Dairy Co-operative (Kyung Seong Dairy Co-operative in those days) used 1 hob (180 ml) glass bottles with either paper caps or cork caps. During 1945-1972, 2 hob (360 ml) glass bottles were produced, and iron caps and egret-shaped plastic film replaced the previously used caps. When there were insufficient numbers of milk bottles, other glass bottles such as soda drink bottles and beer bottles were used instead. Seoul Dairy Co-operative was the only dairy company existing in Korea until Nam Yang Dairy Co. Ltd was founded in March 1964, followed by Hae Tae Dairy Co. Ltd(Tae Han Food Public Corporation in those days) in 1969 and Mae-il Dairy Co. Ltd (Korea Dairy Company in those days) in May 1971. As many other dairy companies along with the above-mentioned companies were established, a variety of dairy products were packaged and marketed. In 1971 Seoul Dairy Co-operative first used triangular-shaped polyethylene film wrappers, and in 1972 Nam Yang Diary was the first company importing sterilized Tetra pak for the packaging of milk. Since 1974 rectangular shaped polyethylene film wrappers and plastic bottles were used. In 1977 the gable top carton pack made of paper was first introduced by Seo Joo Industry Co. Ltd, and its market share increased rapidly with gradual increase in its volume, from 180ml to 200ml, to 250ml, to 500ml and finally to 1,000ml, causing change in the volume of milk consumption. And in Sep. 1987 Pasteur market milk Co. Ltd. first used round type high density polyethylene bottle(body) with low density polyethylene cap of 245g, 490g and 980g volumes respectively.
