Dir. Hong Sangsu’s Film pursued the art film more than popular entertainment movie. His works has watched ordinary life and represented those images objectively. The Character acted in life as the subject but they are watched by exterior existence who are film director and audience. They catch the reality of disruptions when they see Hong sangsu’s film. The real life of Hong sangsu’s film makes his audience to feel the outs1ide world of ordinary life. Daejiga Umulae Ppajin Nal, Gangwondoeui Him, Saenghwaleui Balgyun, Oh! Sujeong etc. are called a style of meditated cinema. Dir. Hong’s meditated cinema are different from that of Andrei Arsenyevich Tarkovsky and Abbas Kiarostami’s film. Dir. Hong’s meditated cinema required to his audience participated in film’s dramatic development. His film is a kind of American experimental cinema which is called Structuralist Film in 1960’s. The concept of structualism in Structuralist Film has another meaning different from usually philosophy concepts. In Structuralist Film structuralism is a theory as experimental art’s movement to start in 1960’s at New York. Michael Kirby who is a professor of New York university, firstly presented Structuralist art theory. He says, his structualism is the capital letter of "Structuralism" and the structuralist knows about memory and expectancy and how these mechanism work. He knows that anything that is remembered or expected. He knows that structure become manifest in the working of the mind. Now comparing the cinematurgy of Hong sangsu’s film to the Korean traditional mask play’s dramaturgy I insist that Dir. Hong’s film is the style of Korean alternative film to pursue the identity of Korean film. The dramaturgy of traditional mask play is only a form for showing every aspect of a play. The story and action of these episodes are well known to most villagers. Each episode is independent, but all relate to the subject of the masked play. Each episode is an independent story, but each has relationship to the subject of the play as in Korean masked play. Aristotle’s plot which has the beginning, the middle and the ending of a play. Gutav Freytag’s development of a plot. It has five steps from Introduction, Rising Action, Crisis or Climax, Falling Action or Return, to Catastrophe of Denouement. The typical plot of masked play represent several different climaxes that happen in the play, each reaching their own climax and catastrophe. The originality of Hong, Sangsu’s film is evaluated by his adoption Structuralist Film style. This study of Hong, Sangsu’s Structuralist Film definite that Hong’s film style from American Structuralist Film and Korean traditional mask play’s dramaturgy. I hope Korean film artist will adopt the form of Korean new cinematurgy.

Dark Knight, that is considered as masterpiece blockbuster, is one of Batman series written by Christopher Nolan. So this movie takes a long way around convention path of Hollywood blockbuster, but it eventually arrives the philosophical place of ‘Introspection of the reality of current Our time’. In other words, in Dark Knight Batman evolved to the social icon that represents the post capitalism from the icon of commercial entertainment. This paper pays attention to reality landscape in Dark Knight especially truths that join one of the part reality through the gap of ‘the symbol’ and reconstitute our reality. These contain the area that is not taken by order and value of ‘the symbol’, and this area can be named as ‘the real’. This paper desired to concretely identify the area with zizek theoy. So this paper analyzed Dark Knight into three parts. First, the background of this movie is the urban space to be carried by mirror image. Second, the social space to filled with criminals as one of main section, third the Carnival that mixed the formal life’s ways to dissolve and the informal life’s ways to invade. In second part, this paper revealed that all the characters are split subjects except Joker and the survival method of these is fantasy. In third part, this paper deal with the relationship of ‘the symbol’ and ‘the real’ through the relationship of Batman & Joker. The battle of Batman $ Joker, fatal fight of good versus evil, eventually is concluded the thing that reveal the truth of good in our time. The results are as follows. To protect good in our reality, we need the mask that protect evil that is the other face of good. And through Joker who resist and plot against to overthrow ‘the symbol’, this movie deny existence of good itself. In Dark Knight, Batman & Joker are other face of each other and twins or doppelganger. Batman & Joker represent ‘the symbol’ and ‘the real’, furthermore they reveal the reality landscape that is the mix of the two worlds.

The cinematic narrative is a kind of cognition which captures circulation of technological images into chains of meaning. In terms of rearranging fragmented senses consciously, it is a modern movement. Conversely, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Mysterious Object at Noon transgresses that kind of movement by foregrounding the ‘mysterious objects’ which break from the classical mode of narration. This essay aims to consider the operation of cinematic narrative as the mediation between the image economy and mass cognition, following historical changes of material economy that demarcate the borderline between the modern and postmodern. Fredric Jameson suggested the cognitive mapping—rearrangements of fragmented and liquidated experience through cultural forms—as the criteria for this division. According to him, the relativism of modernism reflects a universal tendency to map modernized experiences coherently depending on semiautonomous and mutually exclusive meaning systems. Besides, it revealed, on the cultural topography, monodic subjects of modern. In this sense, the classical cinematic narration, arranging distract images through a coherent sign system, is one example of the cognitive mapping of modernism. On the other hand, Mysterious Object at Noon, containing a lot of insoluble images and polyphonic stories, provides one of the examples of postmodern cognitive mapping. For Jameson, the postmodern means the situation in which modernization of material economy excesses the limit of coherent cognition. This film’s strange objects, rupturing narrative completion and subject by its circulation, allegorize that situation of postmodern. Apichatpong’s experiment, however, simultaneously overcomes Jameson’s assessment emphasizing impossibilities of traditional narrative and subject in the postmodern, by using these distract objects as the catalyst to summon heterogeneous memories of the masses. Mysterious Object at Noon shows that those schizophrenic situations, considered as the causes of ‘deeplessness’ and ‘waning of affection’ by Jameson, could be the channel through which heterogeneities and singularities of the masses are revealed and new historical subjects express themselves. In this film, the community of singularity is emerging as the alternative agent of narrative.

Visualizing “Feminine Writing”: Agnes Varda’s cinecritue in Cleo from 5 to 7 and Vagabond

Agnès Varda, nicknamed as the “Grandmother of the French New Wave”, has coined the term “cinécriture” (cine-writing) to describe her filmmaking. Equating a filmmaker’s work with that of a writer is not unique or new. Several filmmakers made an analogy between filmmaking and writing since the silent era and Alexadre Astruc’s notion of “caméra stylo”(camera-pen) greatly influenced the filmmakers of the French New Wave in the 1950s and 1960s. However, what distinguishes Varda’s cinécriture from other concepts of film-writing is that it draws our attention to the possibilities of “feminine writing”(écriture féminine) in film. Her notion of cinécriture shares close similarities with “feminine writing” as proposed by French feminist critics/writers Hélène Cixous who calls for “feminine writing” as an alternative textual, political, and ethical strategy to dismantle the hierarchical binary oppositions of “phallogocentrism” that subordinate the feminine to the masculine. This essay examines Varda’s two feature films—Cléo from 5 to 7(1961) and Vagabond(1985)—in order to explore the ways in which they exemplify “feminine writing” in film. The analysis of the films focuses on how the spatial constructions in each film disrupts the classical narrative model of linear perspective and on the discursive level, how two films challenge the conventional notion of femininity and the patriarchal ideology of the dominant cinema. Cléo from 5 to 7 incorporates multiple perspectives in its mise-en-scène and Vagabond intentionally deconstructs the conventions of the road movie genre by following a female protagonist who journeys toward her death.

This paper examines the modifications in remake films by case-studying Disney’s early digital films that have animated originals. Compared to their animated counterparts, digital films show a few distinct characteristics, which are as follows. First, in digital films that look and feel like live action, exaggeration and sharpening of data that are unique to cartoon form are no longer available. Therefore strong anthropomorphism of non-human characters tends to be reduced. Secondly, the narratives of digital film versions concentrate on the relation of people rather than non-human characters. Although this phenomenon may be due to the difference of the films’ target or genre, the differences between animation and live-action films as media must have affected the narratives.

The Chittendens, a multi-screen digital video by internationally acclaimed Catherine Sullivan and Sean Griffin incorporates a number of creative processes. The musical structure “composed” by Griffin isolates and combines human gestures as highly formative elements. The precise and rigorous display of fragmented bodily movements turn the human bodies into cold fitful instruments. This instrumentalization of the human bodies creates a critical distance towards the performance itself, which then becomes a self-reflexive study of multiple art forms, namely music, dance, theater, and cinema. Doubly alienated from the represented personage, the performers situate themselves in evasive boundaries between fiction and reality, between surface and origin, between history and presence, which unsettle the very foundation the named art mediums. As Timothy Murray asserts, digital imaging replaces realistic representation with numeric arrangements. In this process, image is no longer a mimetic representation of reality based on optical processes but a “language.” The body in The Chittendens precisely undergoes this transformation. Constantly oscillating between these two opposing poles, the convulsive body evokes questions regarding the very societal apparatus that creates what Sullivan calls “self-possession.” A fictive sense of certainty constructed as a result of the immoral corporate culture, self-possession informs the logic of subjectivity in the digital era. My argument is that these multiple entries towards the reflexive contemplation on the “origins” of subjectivity, which coincide with the questions on the “origins” of each medium addressed in the working process, namely music, dance, theater, and cinema, are precisely the inherent characteristics of the digital medium.

It is being said that anybody can make a movie today. The rhetoric of media democratization often goes along with the rapid growth of market share by digital media devices around the world. And we have this image of ‘people’ where they have become much more powerful and smarter than yesterday‘s audiences of the mass communication system. But is it true that the expanded access to digital production and distribution channels of audiovisual media enhance the democratic potential of these media? This paper takes a critical look at the claims of the dominant narrative of digital technology regarding the filmmaking environment for the so-called “lay people.” Looking back the history of cinema, we find that the arrival of every new filmmaking machinery brought with it an endlessly renewed promises of enhanced access and user empowerment that seldom really does follow. This means that its history has also been a history of these failed promises, showing how the radical potentials of these devices that could have (according to the rhetoric of media democracy attached to them) revolutionized the filmmaking opportunities for everybody’s sake, were sutured into the rules of dominant media formations. The historical perspective provides that digital technologies’ rhetoric of media democratization is not new but has a deep root, asking us to realize its repetition of unfulfilled dreaming. Thus, what is important is the context in which these discourses arise against the background of ever- increasing phenomenon of media concentration. Why are there so many digital devices that encourage us not only to consume but also to produce? In spite of the general technological determinism found in both utopian and dystopian discourses of the digital, the desire for equal participation in media that they foreground has a positive implication for driving new filmmaking practice. Life in a Day(2011) and One Day on Earth(2012) are two among the many that experiment themselves with participatory filmmaking practice based on digital network. (Media) Participation has become one of the most abused terms in the digital age. However, when its meaning refers not to an autonomous contribution or commitment of the self, but the presence of equal power relation in decision-making process, it becomes a critical site to reflect on the way participation is organized and/or limited in the filmmaking process. This paper compares the participation mechanisms of these two global media projects in order to think about their different cultural imaginations concerning the relationship between cinema and democracy. The purpose of this paper is to take a critical look at the framework of cinematic democracy in the context of abundant digital devices that are surrounding us today. Digital technology is not a neutral means by which we can enhance or jeopardies democracy depending on how we use it, but a set of cultural frameworks to think about and illuminate a new relationship between cinema and democracy. The paper is also an attempt to find an appropriate way to approach amateur filmmaking, which has been marginalized for so long, but suddenly finding itself being foregrounded by the digital discourse.

The history of mankind has been together with the competition and be together up to this very moment so as to lead a better life. In broadcasting and media environment there is no exception as well. Thanks to media environmental shift of multi-channel and multi-media it has long been built the arena of competition. One of higher-ranked television music competition programmes broadcasted in South Korea, I Am a Singer, which is located around corner of the arena for competition between others plays a crucial role as both a trigger and an accelerator poured out new programmes with competition. The audience in modern society are paralysed by effective anesthetic called as competition. This paper launches from two questions whether the audience interpret the meaning of competition as amusement offerings or individual suffering and how to generate the discourse of competition through this programme. By conducting focus group interview it carefully intends to decipher the discourse of competition projected on I Am a Singer and to obtain the periodical discourse differentiated with traditions. First it shows the contradiction with the aspect of Janus having both proper and adverse effect of competition. Besides the competition is accompanied with both ritual activity and reproduction effect. Simultaneously it suggests an alternative beyond cooperation which has been regarded as an unique solution against competition so far. Although I Am a Singer is a prerecorded programme with elaborated edit, it surely evokes a periodical discourse of competition with allowing the audience to be absorbed in watching just as live broadcasting. In this paper it would like to be a reflexive opportunity of our portrait behind I Am a Singer, which resembles with competitive reality of life in the law of survival of fittest.

As the multiplex theater was introduced, Korea’s film industry made rapid progress. Korea’s film industry went through the ups and downs several times as the direct distribution of foreign film has begun since the 1990s. Sometimes the domestic market share fell down to 15% or less and we felt like the consciousness of crisis in which Korea’s film might disappear. However, as Korea’s film industry made the base of stable development after 2000, 150 million people watched movies for a year in 2011 and 200 Korean movies were produced. Therefore, Korea’s film industry has been established in the significant scale as the industry. The role of multiplex theaters made a great contribution in these industrial development. Now, the scale of Korea’s film industry has been expanded as some movies with more than 10 million viewers have emerged. On the other hand, the problem of monopoly lies under the surface. For example, some films with outstanding box office records was hovering all the screen. As a few films monopolize more than 90% of screen of theaters nationwide, the extreme polarization of film markets has appeared. Blockbuster films with investment of 10 billion won and small-scale films with small budge have been survived. Korea’s film industry is turning to the deformed shape. This phenomenon predicates the foundation of the film industry may become extremely weak due to production of films with uniformity of film subjects and small pool of workforce. Various opinions are expressed. One opinion is saying that these side effects are inevitable in order to maintain the free market system based on development and competition of film industry. The other opinion is saying that the film is national cultural heritage and government should serve as a mediation role at a certain level for future of film industry. The purpose of this study is to investigate the history and concept of multiplex which stands at the core of this controversy and propose the alternative by conducting various case studies in France and Korea about whether cinematic diversity is obtained while minimizing the industrial side effects. The study was conducted focusing on the ways to increase screening opportunity of various films to complement the uniformity of multiplex and expand the cultural programs. Even if more in-depth follow-up studies are needed, ‘minority quota’ or government’s project to support the theater exclusive for artistic films and production supporting project as well as development and extending operation of various programs of each multiplex could be good solutions in order to improve the evils in which one film monopolizes all screens nationwide and to secure the minimal screening of diverse films. It implies that it should be adjusted properly to prevent an erosion of the cultural areas by the logic of capital by encouraging the voluntary efforts of dominant company and giving the benefits or guide from government. If you discard the preconceptions of which the government’s intervention means the collapse of market economy or free competition is against all public benefits with a black and white issue should be discarded upon establishing the policy and think of reasonable method and limitation, the productive alternatives to improve the problems could be discussed.

The twenty-first century represented the extension of mass media based on the technology and it spread out to many different fields. Therefore it brought about the convergence and communication between various genres and fields. While the variety of forms in convergence and communication were leading into culture, some pieces of cultural arts attempted to surpass the limitation of creation in arts, and it created the new way of forms in Performing arts. This study focused on how to utilize visual images in Performing arts, which titled the play I Am you and attempted an analysis aspect of visual images in the play. Moreover, I suggested the idea on new figure of the convergence and communication for audiences and producers. For this study, I used an idea that there are two kinds of images that are optical, visual, objective image and subconscious, imaginative, and mental image from Palul Virillio. Utilizing images in the play I Am you were effective with expending stage space beyond the limitation of time and space. Also this could stimulate audience’s sensory function and maximize the sense of reality. As a result, the audiences and actors in the play could develop relationship actively and communicate interactively.
