Trans-media storytelling defines the process by which a host of contents that exist synchronically integrate into a larger entity. This is closely linked to the ubiquitous computing environment that has been brought into existence by a diversity of media and platforms. In particular, the urban media premised on a particular space resembles trans -media storytelling in that it realises a large description through multiple individual pieces of content. This paper will analyse the structure and characteristics of trans-media storytelling. First, trans-media storytelling uses space-centered storytelling that reflects the recent trend of storytelling. Second, defamiliarization through complexity of story is the key code of trans-media storytelling. This study will be a discussion about the strategy of urban media.

In the era of digital technologies, most enterprises have collected huge amount of data in an electronic form. Business intelligence technology has emerged as a tool to support information summarization, pattern extracting, knowledge discovery, and other knowledge-related tasks. The main part of most business intelligence software is the data mining engine to analyze and report relationships that exist in the stored data. Visualization tools are created to help data analysts easily explore the induced information. For extremely large amount of data stored in the data warehouse and data marts, simply explore information and knowledge through the visualize tool is not possible. We thus propose to put more constraints in the data mining engine of the BI software. We design the framework of the proposed BI system to predict customer churn in the telecommunication industry. The logic-based implementation and performance testing results of the constraint-based pattern mining are also illustrated in this paper.

The sun is the unlimited energy source for life on the earth. However, besides as the energy source, the sun also gives disruptions to the universe around the earth and also to the life on the earth. Sources of the disruptions from the sun are flares and Coronal Mass Ejection/CME. Both of those disruptions in general come from group of sunspots. With the growing of dependency of human life with modern technology, either facility on the surface of the earth or in universe around the earth, the disruptions from the sun should be anticipated. In order to know the complexity level of sunspot groups and their activity, Modified-Zurich sunspot classification is used. Image of sunspots can be taken using the Michelson Doppler Imager instrument (MDI) Continuum / SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory). This research was conducted on the automatic classification of sunspot group that can be used to analyze the space weather conditions and provide information to the public. There are two stages to classify sunspot groups namely feature extraction and pattern recognition. For feature extraction, we used digital image processing to get features of sunspot group, and for pattern recognition, we used artificial neural network. We compared 3 methods of artificial neural networks to get the best result of classification namely backpropagation, probabilistic and combination between self-organizing map and k-nearest neighbor. Among three of them, probabilistic neural network gave the best classification result.

The purpose of this work is to present a practical study on the key factors of usability in small-sized mobile touch-screen applications. Though using smart phones has brought great easiness in our daily life in many ways, many smart phone applications often remain underutilized due to the poor consideration of end-users in the development phase, thus decreasing potential profit of companies. In this paper, we investigate usability problems for a mobile flight booking application on touch-screen phones, and suggest practical solutions. The application is a critical one that can represent the cases of a wide number of smart phone applications. Main expectations of users are presented from HCI (Human Computer Interaction) perspective and discussed through the case study. Questionnaire and interview methods were used for collecting data. Prototype has also been utilized to verify users' expectations of mobile flight booking more accurately. The interviewees who were in the range of ages 18-40 have been randomly selected for this study, which could be also considered as a realistic set because of their diversity. Results have revealed that users are very much concerned about the easiness and the lucidness of functions. Usability is a highly considerable subject for users to prefer a mobile flight booking application over booking tickets via online or agencies.

Mobile applications development challenges the modeling activities that precede the technical design of a software system. The context of a mobile system includes a broad spectrum of technical, physical, social and organizational aspects. Some of these aspects need to be built into the mobile applications. Selecting the aspects that are needed is becoming increasingly more complex with mobile systems than we have previously seen with more traditional information systems. In this paper, we discuss mobile application architectures. We start by describing some of the general concepts and terms behind client-server architectures and follow this by describing clients and servers and the connectivity between them. We then present several interesting architectural patterns and describe why they are useful as general mobile application architecture solutions. Finally, we discuss some of the tenets behind good architectural design and the considerations you need to be aware of when designing mobile applications. We also evaluate the mobile application architecture to apply an example case as best practices.

Recently, with accessible media, tools, and applications, a user has been able to create multimedia files without professional knowledge. A wide variety of multimedia file formats are available to meet different requirements. From the perspective of digital preservation and version management, however, most existing multimedia file formats have several shortcomings. For instance, there is no support for recovering damaged multimedia files using their derived files or a systematic comparison of content among derived files. In this paper, we propose a method to preserve multimedia files in such a way that individual files maintain preservation information along with multimedia data to keep track of change history. In order to show the feasibility of our approach, we extend the ISO base media file format on which various well-known media formats such as MP4 are based and analyze our approach in terms of storage consumption.

Gesture based natural human-robot interaction paradigm has few physical requirements, and thus can be deployed in many restrictive and challenging environments. In this paper, we propose a robot vision based approach to recognizing intentional arm- pointing gestures of human for an object grasping application. To overcome the limitation of robot onboard vision quality and background cluttering in natural indoor environment, a multi-cue human detection method is proposed. Human body is detected and verified by merging appearance and color features with robust head-shoulder based shape matching for reducing the false detection rate. Then intentional dynamic arm- pointing gestures of a person are identified using Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) technique, whilst unconscious motions of arm and head are rejected. Implementation of a gesture-guided robot grasping task in an indoor environment is given to demonstrate this approach, in which a fast and reliable recognition of pointing gesture recognition is achieved.

This article proposes an integrated management and monitoring system based on the in-formation model for the large weapon system on the heterogeneous distributed environments. Since the large weapon system is the large scale distributed system composed of a variety of heterogeneous subsystems, it is very difficult to manage and integrate them. In order to man-age and control consistently the subsystems that operate on the different platforms, a stand-ardized method must be employed to maintain information about them. Also, when the con-figuration of the subsystems is changed, information about subsystems must reflect the changed configuration. This paper uses the information model to manage a large weapon system on the heterogeneous environments in a consistent manner. In addition, the methods for dynamic reconfiguration of information model are suggested to dynamically reflect the changes in the configuration of the subsystems into the integrated management and monitor-ing system. With these methods, we expect that the large weapon system can be managed re-liably.

There are many methods to localize its position based on visual sensing schemes in indoor environment. This paper presents the problem of finding the correspondences of images feature’s descriptors when the images have large rotation. SIFT and SURF have always been considered as very effective algorithms to extract interest points and their orientation and descriptors. For descriptors, one of both uses a lot of time to calculate descriptors and the other has not good performance in large rotation of the image. In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm to calculate interest points’ descriptors for relative self-localization estimation. The proposed algorithm will satisfy descriptor invariant when the image rotates. Meanwhile, the proposed method reduces the calculated time as much as possible. Interest point’s descriptors are formed by resampling local regions.

The information technology is evolved to accomodate the ever changing end users request for new services. As the request for the high data rate multimedia contents explosively increases the related hardware, software and networking technologies are finding ways to effectively satisfy end users expectation. Aligned with this trend the display device becomes thinner to reduce the weight while supporting high resolution quality for both mobile and indoor usage. The LCD device is now an inevitable component in almost all the information processing appliances. The exothermic problem becomes one of the important issues which should be solved for various applications. In LCD adopted device the relative inside areas gets packed with various types of electronic devices as heat generation sources which include the display driver integrated circuit (IC). One of reasons for this problem is that more and more advanced display devices such as LCD and LED require driver ICs with higher degree of circuit integration within a limited area while demanding higher performances. Also a lot of efforts have been made to reduce the edge areas as the big screen display as well as portable mobile devices are getting popular in many fields. In this paper an enhanced heat sink method is proposed to reduce the heat generation problem caused by the driver ICs to maintain the stability of the operation and to protect the circuits in the chip on film package. The proposed method has advantages over the conventional ones in terms of the unit production price and no limitations on the arrangement of the IC.

Most approaches to adaptive hypermedia were based around acquiring and representing learner’s knowledge. While this is crucial for user modelling in general adaptive hypermedia, it is very limited for e-learning because it does not address the far more fundamental problem which is “learners learn in different ways, different learning styles and different thinking styles”. The design of adaptive e-learning hypermedia system (AEHS) in this work is based on quantitative and qualitative research; the adaptive rules are deduced from the results of a psychological and pedagogical questionnaire. Pedagogical activities are the outcome of a series of deductions; the final activity sets are manifested in AEHS. In order to assess the positive effect and validity of adaptation on the basis of learners' thinking and learning styles, this study presents two subsequent experiments. The first experiment explores the relationship of thinking style and pedagogical activities to validate this specific psychological construct in the context of educational hypermedia. The second experiment presents the effect of a set of human factors (thinking style, learning style) in AEHS.
