Objective : The aim of this study was to examine factors influencing problematic drinking in Korean adults based on the Theory of Planned behavior. Methods : This study used data from a cross sectional survey conducted by the Korea Health Promotion Institute in December 2022. Data from 3,000 adults aged 20 to 70 were subjected for analysis. The dependent variable was the alcohol drinking risk level measured using Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test(AUDIT). Independent variables were as followings; sociodemographic characteristics(age, gender, education, income), attitude, norm(descriptive, normative), perceived behavioral control, intention to alcohol drinking. Results : Factors influencing problematic drinking(AUDIT score ≥ 8) were lower age, being male, a higher level of negative attitude toward alcohol drinking, a higher level of alcohol drinking norms, a lower level of perceived behavioral control, and having an intention to reducing or quitting drinking. Conclusion : Interventions for to reducing or quitting alcohol drinking among adults should include strategies to change the norms of alcohol drinking and enhance alcohol control behaviors.

Objectives: This study attempted to verify the theoretical model of social support that mediates negative mental health and middle-aged problem drinking, which was not covered in previous studies, and to see if there is a difference according to gender. Methods: This study collected 360 middle-aged men and women aged 40 to 60 and analyzed them using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 25.0. Frequency analysis and descriptive statistics were conducted to understand the characteristics of the main variables, and multi-group analysis according to mediating effects and gender was conducted through structural equation model verification. Results: First, negative mental health in middle age was found to have an effect on problem drinking. Second, there was a mediating effect of social support in the relationship between negative mental health and problem drinking in middle age. Third, it was found that there was a difference between groups according to gender in the influence of negative mental health in middle age on problem drinking through social support. Conclusion: Healing rehabilitation programs for negative mental health that affect problem drinking in middle age should be prepared. In addition, social networks in middle age should be explored and various social resources should be utilized. Various education and programs in the community should be prepared to provide customized services according to gender.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate gender differences in the relationship between the types of binge drinking―depression comorbidity and suicidality among Korean adolescents. Methods: The current study used The 18th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey data (n=51,847) to examine the association between binge drinking―depression comorbidity and suicidality across gender. Results: Logistic regression analyses revealed that binge drinking―depression comorbidity was associated with suicidality in females (OR=9.51, 95% CI: 8.00–11.30) and in males (OR=8.25, 95% CI: 6.82–9.97). Binge drinking was associated with suicidality in females (OR=1.65, 95% CI: 1.28–2.12) but not males (OR=1.22, 95% CI: 0.94–1.58). Conclusion: When establishing policies for the youth suicide prevention, screening high-risk groups such as binge drinking and depression, and the development of gender-specific prevention education programs should be considered.

Objectives: Among the alcohol’s harm, drunk driving is identified as the most critical issue from a public health perspective. Drunk driving accidents are preventable and can result in injuries or fatalities not only for the driver but also for others. The incidence of drunk driving is most prominent in the age groups of 30s, 50s, 40s, reflecting the influence of normative beliefs and diverse life environments associated with each age cohort. In response, this study aims to identify lifecycle-specific factors influencing drunk driving and provide foundational data to decrease the incidence of such incidents. Methods: Using raw data from the 8th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency(2018-2021), the analysis focused on a weighted sample of 24,966,369 adults aged 19 and above, eligible for alcohol consumption in Korea. The dependent variable is the occurrence of drunk driving, while the independent variables include sociodemographic characteristics (sex, age, household income, education level, occupation, marital status), alcohol-related factors (age of drinking initiation, frequency of drinking, frequency of binge drinking), and safety consciousness factors (frequency of riding in vehicles with drunk drivers and seatbelt usage in accompanying vehicles). Results: The study findings reveal a higher prevalence of drunk driving experiences among middle-aged, elderly, and young adults, the frequency of rides in other drunk driving vehicles correlating across all age groups. Notably, associations were found between drunk driving and factors such as seatbelt usage in accompanying vehicles, age at which alcohol consumption commenced, and marital status, with significant relationships observed among middle-aged and older individuals. Additionally, binge drinking frequency showed a meaningful correlation with the middle-aged population. Conclusions: Consequently, Recommendations include proposing tailored programs for safety awareness through traffic safety education, utilizing community-based public health and medical institutions. Suggestions for developing personalized education and correctional programs, considering lifecycle-specific characteristics, were offered to enhance safety consciousness and mitigate the prevalence of drunk driving.

Objectives: We analyzed the direct effects of message fatigue on negative emotions, negative perception and drinking attitudes, as well as the indirect effects through negative emotions and negative perceptions Methods: A survey was conducted on 427 college students using quota sampling method considering demographic characteristics such as gender and grade. Results: First, message fatigue had a significant positive effect on negative emotions, while it was not significant on negative perceptions and drinking attitudes. Second, negative emotions have a significant effect on negative perceptions and drinking attitudes, and negative perceptions have a significant effect on drinking attitudes. Third, the path ‘message fatigue → negative emotion → drinking attitude’ was significant, while the path ‘message fatigue → negative emotion → negative cognition → drinking attitude’ was not significant. Conclusion: In practice, it is necessary to avoid informational messaging and develop a message that considers sympathic elements.
