Theology is the study of God. Nonetheless, theology and humanities share a common goal of making humans more human and better. In this respect, the Old Testament theology written in the background of the life and history of the ancient Israelites is also inseparable from the humanities. Specifically, the Old Testament theology is closely related to the humanities in a methodological way. In this paper, I will examine how the Old Testament theology has developed in close relation with the field of humanities and read the Old Testament from the viewpoint of ‘History, Literature and Philosophy.’

The most important day of religious significance in the Old Testament is ‘Sabbath’. But it is impossible to define this Hebrew word as just a word ‘Sabbath’. Because the fall of the kingdom of Israel and the Jewish experience of the Babylonian captivity brought about a decisive change in understanding ‘Sabbath’. First, this word is derived from the word ‘šapattu’ in Akkadian, which means the 15th day of the lunar calendar(=the full moon). Above mentioned "the full moon" was in Mesopotamia a celebration day for the family and a day to sacrifice for divinity. This tradition influenced the understanding of the ‘Sabbath’ in the time of the kingdom of Israel. After the fall of the kingdom, the concept of ‘Sabbath;’ has changed from the meaning of ‘the full moon’ to the ‘Sabbath’. The Sabbath here was a day of rest on the seventh day and a holy day of worshiping YHWH. This fact is reflected in the documents that were recorded after the Babylonian exile. First, The three prophecies emphasize keeping the Sabbath day holy. ‘Sabbath’ in these prophecies was an eternal sign and eternal covenant between God and Israel. On the other hand, in the Priestly source ‘Sabbath’ was later associated with Creation Theology and Decalogue. But the concept of the Sabbath ‘eternal sign’ and ‘eternal covenant’ emphasized in the three prophecies is also mentioned here. The main concern of Chronicler's History was the Sabbath Order and the offerings that were held on the Sabbath in Jerusalem's temple. But Sabbath Laws, such as forbidding all work on the Sabbath, have been made after considerable time, perhaps in the Maccabean period. Most importantly, the Sabbath was one of the most important concepts representing the identity of the Jews, such as ‘circumcision’ or ‘Passover’.

This work deals with three questions raised when reading Nehemiah 13. Firstly, this chapter seems auxiliary. It looks better for the book of Nehemiah to cease at Nehemiah 12 where it conveys the moving story of the wall dedication. Secondly, the so-called "remember formula" is rarely used in the Old Testament, but quite frequently occurs in Nehemiah 13. Awkwardly, however, it is used in relation to the unexpected narratives rather than that of the wall-rebuilding. Lastly, Nehemiah 13 reports Nehemiah's second visit to Jerusalem. It is hard to understand, though, the purpose of the visit when considering his achievements that the chapter conveys. They were not urgent enough for Nehemiah to come back without his taking a rest in Persia. Several proposals have been advanced to answer these questions. For instance, there has been a proposal to see the chapter as significant and theologically intended by the author. Another was on the "remember formula" put forward by Williamson who understood on the context of the Nehemiah's memoir. The last was a historical study of Sanballat and Tobiah, which helps us to comprehend the political context of the Nehemiah 13. These proposals, however, offer, at most, limited answers to our questions. Nehemiah stayed 12 years for his first visit to Jerusalem. But the book hardly mention what Nehemiah did for such a long time after finishing the wall rebuilding. Nehemiah 13 gives us a clue to suppose what he performed during the period, and for what he aimed and reformed during the second visit. From our study of the chapter it is disclosed that Nehemiah's mission was to keep the priests in check and to support the Levites who were their opponents. This view is confirmed by the remember formula which appears in the last verse of each section. From the discussion above we may conclude that Nehemiah 13 is not an appendix but plays an important role to shed a light on the political context of Nehemiah 13.

The purpose of this study is to analyze repentance movements in the Old Testament that arose in times of national crisis, in order to seek a model of the repentance movement for churches in today’s crisis. This study was achieved by examining the following texts: 1 Samuel 7, Joel, Jonah 3, Isaiah 1, Jeremiah 7, Daniel 9, and 2 Chronicles 7. As a result of this study, we discovered that the Deuteronomistic repentance movement forms a pattern of imminent threat of disasters, urge for repentance, and removal of disasters through repentance. The repentance movement of 1 Samuel 7 was the most ideal movement in which the Israelites gathered in Mizpah to repent and worship God as the one and only, resulting in God’s protection of the Israelites from the threat of the Philistine army to maintain peace. Joel led a repentance movement by showing a prophetic action conveying an impending crisis that the people did not notice through natural disasters. Jonah 3 deals with the salvation of the Gentiles, but it presents an ideal model of all people participating in repentance and avoiding a disaster that has been announced to be imminent. Isaiah 1 demands the practice of justice from the remnant of Judah if they wish to survive, who has just experienced a disaster through disobedience. Following Deuteronomistic repentance movement pattern, Jeremiah also demanded that the Israelite people should return from their evil deeds and do justice and righteousness in face of the crisis of destruction. Daniel 9, though not a repentance movement of the people, is an exemplar of a whole-hearted prayer for them out of sorrow for national destruction by their sin, totally relying on God’s grace. Unlike the Deuteronomistic repentance movement patterns, 2 Chronicle 7 requires repentance movements that understand the crisis of natural disasters as the need to heal the land, ask forgiveness and the healing of the land, humble themselves, and pray for God’s presence. I hope this study will contribute to the restoration of the church which participates in the repentance movement.

The prophecy of Huldah appears as a synoptic text in the Books of Kings and Chronicles. Huldah’s discourse, though it is brief, is situated at the climax of Josiah’s reform. However, especially in domestic research, the amount of research on the subject of Huldah is scarce, whereas studies on Josiah’s reform is affluent. The prophecy of Huldah is particularly significant, for it causes critical questions to arise. The questions, which cannot be overlooked, are diverse from basic questions like “Who is the prophetess Huldah?” or “Has Huldah’s prophecy been fulfilled?” to the issue “What is the role of Huldah’s prophecy in the reform of Josiah.” In addition, the ambiguity of Huldah and her prophecy inspired later Jewish traditions. Therefore, this study intends not only to encourage others to do research concerning these questions but also to investigate the main issue of how the Chronicler reshaped the text of the Deuteronmistic historian(s). This study proceeds as follows: Firstly, we will observe how Huldah’s prophecy functions in the broader context of Josiah’s reform. Secondly, we will reveal how Huldah’s text was literally transformed in the Book of Chronicles. Finally, through a comparison of the above investigations, we will observe the theological perspective of Huldah’s text, which was interpreted by the Chronicler. In summary, Huldah’s prophecy needs to be understood in the broader context of Josiah’s reform. Additionally, Huldah’s prophecy operates differently in the Books of Kings and Chronicles. When it comes to the role of Huldah’s prophecy, the Book of Kings is closely related to the subject of Judah’s demise, whereas the Book of Chronicles focuses on explaining the cause of Josiah’s death by reconstructing the scene of his death. The discourse of Huldah in a cursory reading seems to have nothing in particular in terms of length, however, an overall change can be discovered in the discourse order and the theological perspective as well as the literary strategy of the Chronicler.

This study aims to examine the 'descriptions of the foreign nations' in the Book of the Twelve by using a new methodology which is currently applied in this field, that is, ‘a diachronic and synchronic approach.’ In particular, it tries to find out how the descriptions of the foreign nations in the compositional aspect are arranged in the Book of the Twelve and which role they play there. The word of judgment against the foreign nations there, whether it is related to the judgment or salvation of Israel, or to their salvation itself, is first referred to in the frame of ‘Amos-Obadiah-Jonah’/‘Micah-Nahum-Habakkuk’ and also in the frame of the consecutive order of Jonah-Nahum in the LXX. The remaining six books are separately analysed into pre-exilic and post-exilic books, namely ‘Hosea-Joel and Zephaniah’ and ‘Haggai-Zechariah-Malachi.’ When we consider the meaning of the descriptions of the foreign nations, firstly, we recognize that there is the repeated pattern of ‘Israel-nations-nations’ in the frame of 'Amos-Obadiah-Jonah'/'Micah-Nahum-Habakkuk,' and that the messages focus much on Israel. Secondly, we know that the judgment and salvation of God goes beyond not only the national dimension but also the periodical one and encompasses the whole nations of the world. Besides, the intentional arrangement of the ‘Jonah-Nahum’ in the LXX is seen as an expression of God's absolute freedom of sovereignty in judgment and salvation. In the pre-exilic and post-exilic books, Hosea as the introduction to the Book of the Twelve shows the Israel-centric character, and all the other books contain the motif of ‘the day of YHWH.’ This motif confirms not only that both Israel and the nations are the object of YHWH's judgment and salvation, but also that the last part of the Book of the Twelve more strongly emphasizes YHWH’s eschatological dominance. This study is an academic try to keep pace with current trends in the research on the Book of the Twelve. God's attitude toward the foreigners shown in the Book of the Twelve may teach us how we should behave toward them under the social situation rapidly changing toward a multicultural society.

This article aims to study not only the Identity of Israel in postexilic Jewish Community, but also Receptivity and Exclusiveness of Gentile in the book of Ezra-Nehemiah. For this study, literary criticism in the texts of ‘foreign[or other] women’(Ezra 10:2, 10, 11, 14, 17, 18, 44; Neh 9:2; 13:26-27, 30) were discussed, and first of all, it is compared and analyzed by materials of ancient near East. Each texts strictly prohibite intermarriage of Israelites, who would have married women from other nations, and compel a divorce even between marriaged couple. The ‘Ezra-group’ or ‘Nehemiah-group’ was facing the crisis, because holy seed has become mixed with ‘the peoples of the land after return of Gola Community in the postexilic period. At this point, last compositor of these books was making a set of appropriate prohibition about the mixed marriage in connection with Dtn 7 and 23:3-6 and has added an extension of the concept of holiness from the edited Priestly tradition in Lev 11 and 18 for a renewal of the new faith community. This community was based on the separation between Receptivity and Exclusiveness of Gentile in a religious and ritualistic position, but it is clear that there was fierce competition around the temple Zerubbabel to take the politic privilege. In this study the important text is Nehemiah 13. Its compositor new strengthen the Jewish solidarity in the politic position. He was trying to resolve the politic privilege by the concept of priesterly purity. The core of this issue is ‘the marriaged women with other nations. Interestingly, it was adapted to the identity of the women and the meaning of the word ‘foreign’, which was to related not with the ‘ethnic’ character but the ‘other’ religious Receptivity in the Israel’s society. Thus the compositor interpreted the identity of the early Jewish Community in closely relation to the topic ‘holy seed and purity’. With this concept he accepted the theological tradition in Jesaja 6 and his message was oriented to obey the Torah. Through this study we come to know how the bild of the Gentile in the Israel’s society was accepted. And it is today help newly to define attitude of Gentile in the light of the Bible.

The Death of the Old and the Birth of the New: The Framework of the Book of Numbers and the Pentateuch는 민수기의 거시적인 구조를 연구하는데 획기적인 시대를 열었다.

The book of Numbers had caused a vexing problem related to its literary structure to Old Testament scholarship. In 1985, D. T. Olson's book, The Death of the Old and the Birth of the New: The Framework of the Book of Numbers and the Pentateuch, opened a new era to the field of the study on Numbers' macro-literary structure. Olson divided the book of Numbers into two parts, chaps. 1-25 (the death of the old generation) and 26-36 (the birth of the new generation). Since then, his book has taken a place among the scholars who study the book of Numbers should consider. But this paper intends to argue against Olson's view and to present a more reliable macrostructure of the book. I contend that chaps. 1-20 deal with the death of the old generation and chap. 21 shows the hopeful start of the new generation. In finding its integral literary structure, B. S. Childs' canonical approach is employed because this method sees the book of Numbers as a unified whole. To present a more persuasive structure, this paper tries to find the macrostructure, firstly, in the book of Numbers, secondly, in the literary structure of the Pentateuch, and, thirdly, in the literary structure of the Hexateuch. Firstly, in the book, Numbers 11:1-3 functions to outline what is to come to the old generation and Numbers 21:1-3 functions to sum up what is to come to the new. Numbers 11:1-3 tells that the fire of Yahweh consumed some outlying parts of the camp. This is only the beginning of the demise of the old generation. The camp of Israel consists of three parts, the outer (the twelve tribes), the inner (the Levites), and the center (Moses, Aaron, Aaron's sons). This three part camp collapses one after another, first, the twelve tribes (11:4-14:45), second, the Levites (16:1-17:13), and third, Moses and Aaron(20:1-29). Finally, after all these failures, Numbers 21:1-3 presents the victory of the new generation as a turning point. Secondly, the comparison between Numbers and Deuteronomy reveals the clear demarcation of the old generation and the new. Deuteronomy tells that the entire old generation had perished until they crossed the Wadi Zered (Deut 2:13-15). In Numbers, the event of the old generation crossing Wadi Zered is reported in Numbers 21:12. Then the comparison of the two books clearly proves that the turning point from the old generation to the new is at Numbers 21. Thirdly, in the Hexateuch, the old generation and the new have the same stages of faith journey. The Pharaoh of Egypt fears the old generation because of their numbers and strength, worries and orders to kill them (Exod 1). Balak, king of Moab, fears the new generation because of their numbers and strength, worries and orders to curse them (Num 22). The two kings' behavior to remove the Israelites is the same and the result is also the same (Exod 1-2; Num 23-24). Then the old generation are saved by God and make a covenant with God at Sinai (Exod 19-24), and the new are also saved by God and make a covenant with God at the plains of Moab (Deut 1-34). Finally, the old generation break the covenant and perish in the wilderness (Num 11-20), but the new keep the covenant and conquer the Promised Land (Josh 1-24). These comparisons between the old generation and the new clearly demonstrates that the shift in generation does not occur between Numbers 25 and 26, but between Numbers 20 and 21. Therefore, this study provides the obvious ideas for the macrostructure of the book of Numbers.

The Book of Ezekiel may be defined by its deterministic understanding of history. God’s redemption of history, as presented by the book, may be outlined: (1) Israel is sinful and incorrigible from the beginning; (2) since the people are incorrigible, they do not listen to God or the prophet; (3) God punishes them; (4) not because of the people’s penitence but for the sake of his name, God restores Israel graciously and forcefully; (5) then, only then, the people will repent and know that YHWH is their God. A remarkable aspect of such an understanding of history is, of course, that repentance cannot be chosen by humans but it is imposed by God as a “by-product” of his history. Given this understanding of determinism and repentance, however, passages such as Ezekiel 3:16b-21, 14:1-11, 18:21-32, and 33:10-20, in which repentance occurs significantly, present a prominent theological contradiction, since they seem to imply that repentance is available to the people of Israel and, if so, there is room for human participation. Several solutions have been presented, and Baruch J. Schwartz’s as one of the recent ones seems the most creative. In his “Repentance and Determinism in Ezekiel,” Schwartz argues on the basis of a close reading of Ezekiel 20 that “Ezekiel’s doctrine of determinism . . . is the result of, not the opposite of, his belief in the absolute efficacy of repentance.” His conclusion, however, sounds diametrically opposed to what we intuitively feel about repentance. The present study argues that the apparent contradiction may be solved by asking two related but distinct questions about the four repentance passages. Is repentance efficacious in God’s dealing with his people in principle? Were Ezekiel’s audience able to repent when they heard God’s/the prophet’s call to repentance? Through the exegesis of the four passages in which repentance significantly appears (3:16b-21; 14:1-11; 18:21-32; 33:10-20), the study argues that, although all passages answer the first question in the affirmative, all passages are not relevant with regard to the second question. Accordingly, on the basis of the passages that potentially answer our second question, the study concludes that Ezekiel’s contemporaries were not able to respond to God’s call to repentance. In other words, God did not call Israel to repentance in order to emphasize their sinfulness only. God called Israel to repentance sincerely, but Ezekiel’s contemporaries were simply unable to answer His sincere call. This situation ultimately led God to restore Israel forcefully. If successfully argued, the present study would contribute to a more holistic understanding of God and theology of the book of Ezekiel.
