A Team Project Based Assessment Method for Engineering Design Course

Implementing prototypes and engineering design education that requires creativity among engineering students has become a universal trend. Engineering design education is a subject taught in a setting where students gather in a team, decide on a single topic, and cooperate with one another to perform a project. Team project based evaluation is a main part of engineering design education. Many instructors agree that harmonizing creative evaluation and outcome assessment is difficult. To resolve this issue, we have surveyed various creativity assessments and engineering design education methodologies, and have modelled existing evaluating elements into a creative process and outcome assessment framework for each team project assessment. We have evaluated students in three levels (fair, good, and excellent) for each assessment element. Based on the survey results from students who took the course, we concluded that the new assessment model is an innovative method of assessment that enhanced both the students’ and the instructor’s satisfaction of the course.

Display technology has evolved much lately. No wonder the quality of a device is best judged by its display. In today’s time, displays have gone from miniature monochrome screens on huge devices to thinner screens on smartphones and from monochrome to millions of colors and from no touch to multi touch support. But the most important point to be pondered upon is that a new type of display technology is now being actively adopted with the first devices with flexible screens to be launched in the near future. But before making a leap into that future of new technology, one must know how the display technology evolved and where it stands now. Discussing the various types of displays and their pros and cons, the paper depicts the switching of technology from one to another.

With the development of information technology, computer technology has been fully penetrated into every field of life, the computer technology in architectural design also developed from aided design to parametric design. In this paper, the authors analyze the application of parametric design in nonlinear landscape architecture, and realize the dynamic simulation of nonlinear design. By using 3D digital technology, the engineer can simulate the real information of the nonlinear building; and this technology is an important technical support for the construction of complex structures. The results show that in the face of the construction of the complex structure building, the nonlinear shape building is not only dependent on the computer software technology, but also depends on the computer aided manufacturing technology.

WSDL Retrieval for Web Services Based on Hybrid SLVM

Recently, two operable WSDL retrieval approaches, bipartite-graph matching and KbSM, were developed for Web service discovery. But their models and similarity metrics of WSDL ignore some term or semantic feature, and involve formal method problem of representation or difficulty of parameter verification. SLVM approaches depend on statistical term measures to implement XML document representation. Consequently, they ignore the lexical semantics and the relevant mutual information, leading to dataset analysis errors. This work proposed a service retrieval method, hybrid SLVM of WSDL, to address above problems in feature extraction. This method constructed a lexical semantic spectrum using WordNet for characterizing the lexical semantics, and built a special term spectrum based on TF-IDF. Then, feature matrix for WSDL representation was built on the hybrid SLVM. Applying to NWKNN algorithm, on dataset OWLS-TC-v2, our method achieves better F1 measure and query precisions than bipartite-graph matching and KbSM.

A Fingerprint Sensor with Pipelined Scan Driver for Mobile Applications

This paper proposes a pipelined scan driver architecture for a fingerprint sensor based on an integrator. The proposed pipelined scan driver secures enough time to integrate sensor signals of a fingerprint sensor because a fingerprint sensor based on an integrator requires a large number of clocks to get sensor signals of reasonable SNR. Therefore, the proposed pipelined scan driver reduces an overall image capture time effectively without performance degradation by integrating the sensor signals for several sensor cells simultaneously. A prototype 88x2 array fingerprint sensor combined with the proposed pipelined scan driver were designed in this paper. The implemented pipelined scan driver was simulated with Verilog HDL for the functional verification. The 88x2 fingerprint sensor with a synthesized pipelined scan driver were implemented and simulated using a standard 0.18μm CMOS technology. The simulation results were presented and analyzed in this paper.

Removing Raindrops in Continuous Video Images for Fixed-Object Surveillance Systems

In this paper, a dynamic algorithm is proposed that is aimed at removing raindrops within fixed background video images according to the volume of raindrops. In surveillance videos with fixed backgrounds, when the field of vision is obstructed because of falling rain or snow, obtaining picture information on the objects becomes difficult. Therefore, obstacles such as raindrops that obstruct the field of vision should be removed from pictures to obtain more specific picture information. The proposed technique obtains images on a periodical basis from a fixed background picture and assesses whether there are raindrops in the present screen among the obtained images. The proposed technique predicts the volume of raindrops by comparing images obtained periodically and removes raindrops by applying a different dynamic algorithm based on the predicted volume of raindrops. This study embodied and experimented with the proposed technique and verified that the result was excellent.

Quantum dot cellular automata (QCA) are pledging nanotechnology which has been used widely in digital circuits and systems. Conventional lithography based VLSI model encounter acute challenges of tunneling, variation of doping and short channel issue. In a remarkably fast development of VLSI technology, it is the cardinal of the age to reach a stable model with area and low power consumption. QCA is a promising alternative to complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) technology with many enticing features such as high-speed, low power consumption and higher switching frequency than transistor based technology. The code converters are the basic unit for transformation of data to execute arithmetic processes. In this paper, a novel QCA based 2-bit binary-to-gray, 3-bit binary-to-gray, and 4-bit binary-to-gray code converter have been proposed. The proposed design reduces the number of cells, area, and raises switching speed. The energy dissipation by the proposed circuits are evaluated which certifies the prospect of QCA nano-circuit presenting as a substitute level for the attainment of reversible circuits. The consistency of the proposed circuits is tested under thermal randomness that reveal the functioning effectiveness of the circuits. The proposed circuits are simulated using QCADesigner and Microwindlite tool which is widely used for simulation and verification.
