The purpose of this study was to identify the correlations between medical students’ communication skills and patient-physician interaction of clinical performance examination. A total of 36 fourth-year medical students were enrolled in this study and were surveyed concerning communication skills during clinical performance examination. The survey included 20 items in 4major areas: pre-interview (greeting, verifying patient’s name, introducing self, expressing interest, and confirming major symptoms), data collection (asking open-ended questions, reflecting, facilitation, clarifying information, and mid-point summarizing), data provision and patient education (finding out what the patient is thinking, responding to the patient’s emotions, explaining in a manner easy to understand, checking for the patient’s comprehension, taking additional questions), and non-verbal communication (professional appearance, active and respectful listening, appropriate eye contact, appropriate nodding, appropriate silence). 20 items of communication skills were reclassified to 5 patient-physician interaction items, and compared with patient-physician interaction scores of clinical performance examination. There were no correlations between communication skills and patient-physician interaction scores in two examination items (breast pain and acute abdominal pain). This study demonstrated that medical education of communication skills could not be transferred to improvement of patient-physician interaction in clinical skills assessment.

There are several methods of psychophysiological data collection from humans such as, Electrocardiogram (ECG), Galvanic Skin Response (GSR), Electromyography (EMG), and Electroencephalography (EEG). This paper is presenting the emotion recognition of EEG brain signals using Support Vector Machine (SVM). The emotions were elicited in the subjects using emotion related stimuli. We used the emotional stimuli from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) database in this research. These stimuli belonged to five types of emotions in our experiment such as, happy, calm, neutral, sad and scared. The raw EEG brain signals were preprocessed to remove the artifacts. We introduced a feature extraction method using Hjorth parameters. The set of features were extracted from preprocessed EEG signals of each subject, separately. The combined feature set of all subjects was processed through SVM. The results had shown the 70 % accuracy of emotion recognition in arousal-valence domain over 30 subjects.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) and ventricular tachycardia (VT) are life-threatening signals. Automated external defibrillators can decrease the fatality rate if the VF/VT detection is stable and quick. This thesis proposes improved VF/VT detection. For our experiments, we use the complete Creighton University Ventricular Tachyarrhythmia Database. Samples are analyzed under the same conditions in intervals of 7 s. Based on this data, we propose a time-delay transform. Then, we extract six shockable features, three known and three new, which are used to construct our Neural Network with Weight Fuzzy Membership Functions model (NEWFM). The result is better than the phase space reconstruction algorithm.

Every optical system is influenced with a set of aberrations. Some of them are corrected by the manufacturer of the optical system, other aberrations must be corrected additionally e.g. using methods of digital image correction. The presented paper describes a method which enables correction of a barrel or pillow distortion of an image of small range using the direct-mapping technique. The proposed method uses an algorithm of adaptive metaheuristics marked as jDE and a polynomial representation of the image distortion. The advantage of connecting direct mapping technique and adaptive metaheuristics is primarily high speed of finding basic coefficients of the correction polynomial; in our case it is polynomial of degree up to 7 and with a selectable combination of the used polynomial degrees. The disadvantage of the direct-mapping method is the necessity of reconstruction of the missing pixels in the final image, which is here solved very effectively by using optimizer jDE again. Using the proposed method it is possible to obtain high quality image free of barrel or pillow distortion. If the focus length of the used optical system is constant, values of the correction coefficients and positions of individual recovered pixels stay invariable as well

Electrocardiogram and Respiratory signal are correlated to each other. In this paper respiration rate has been estimated from ECG. We purpose a novel combination of Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (EEMD) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) in order to remove the artifacts and we have estimated the respiratory rate from the denoised ECG by creating the envelope of the denoised signal. The canonical components corresponding to the artifacts were removed on the basis of correlation coefficient of denoised signal and ground truth signal. The MIT- Polysomonographic and Apnea-ECG databases of physionet bank were used to acquire the ECG signals. Real time Baseline wander noise from MIT-NSTDB was added to each record and the respiratory rate determined was compared with the corresponding respiratory signals. The average snr improvement in case of denoising using EEMD-CCA is 20.8989db. The average BPM error in respiration rate derived from ECG denoised from EEMD is ±2.7 BPM.

This phenomenological study examined nursing students’ experiences of an educational emergency nursing-care simulation program on hypoglycemic patients. Participants comprised nine nursing students without prior simulation experience, selected from the present batch at the department of S university. One trained research assistant divided the students into three teams with three members each, and delivered two-hour theoretical lectures about diabetes and related nursing interventions. Subsequently, the assistant conducted two rounds of simulation tasks and debriefing. To understand the participants’ experiences of the program, focus group interviews were conducted. Data were analyzed by applying the Colaizzi phenomenological method. The simulation participation experience tended to be clustered into four categories and eleven sub- themes. The four areas were “first encounter with actual clinical cases,” “integrated application of individual nursing knowledge,” “discovering one’s identity as a future professional nurse,” and “learning through repetition and mistakes.” The participants showed a very positive attitude to the overall effectiveness of the practical session, although they were virtual situations. This suggests that simulation-based learning is an effective tool that should be employed in nursing education.

This research analyzed the effect that the factors of hospital choice of cancer patients have on customer satisfaction. For this study, a survey was conducted on 450 cancer patients who used hospitals in regional and Seoul metropolitan area from July, 1st to July 30th of 2014. The results of this study are as follows. First, this research points out that human factors of the medical staff have the greatest influence on customer satisfaction for cancer patients such as the medical team’s competence, friendliness, and detailed explanation. Second, the analysis indicates that physical factors also have positive influence on customer satisfaction such as latest medical equipment and hospital environment. Third, the data shows that the accessibility of the hospital does not have much effect on customer satisfaction for cancer patients. This research demonstrates that the satisfaction rate of most critically-ill patients is directly linked to the two main elements: human factors—medical team’s competence, detailed explanation, and friendliness; and physical factors—latest medical equipment, pleasant environment, and convenient facilities.

In the past decade, there has been a rapid increase in the use of mobile phones and other small hand-held devices for communication. A forward head posture (turtle neck posture) is becoming more common with the increasing popularity of smartphones. The aim of this study was to evaluate the craniovertebral angle, head position angle, pain threshold of the sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius muscles, and presence of depression in heavy smartphone users compared to a control group. Twenty healthy students participated in the study. The participants were recruited from Sahmyook University and were divided into a heavy user group (n=10) and a control group (n=10) according to smartphone addiction proneness. All protocols and procedures were approved by the Institutional Review Board of Sahmyook University (Seoul, South Korea) and all the subjects signed a statement of informed consent. Participants in both groups were assessed for their pain pressure threshold of the sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius muscles, craniovertebral angle and head position angle, and depression. When comparing the results between the two groups, there were significant differences in the pain threshold of the sternocleidomastoid and upper trapezius muscles, head position angle, and depression (p<.05), but not in the craniovertebral angle. Based on the results, this study shows that heavy smartphone use may produce considerable stresses on the cervical spine, thus changing the cervical curve and pain threshold of the muscles around the neck. Smartphones could also cause negative effects on a person’s psychological status, such as depression. Therefore, individuals should make an effort to look at their phones with a neutral spine and to avoid spending hours hunched over their screens each day.

The electromyography (EMG) is the measure of electrical activity produced by the muscles which is usually represented as a function of time. This electromyography can be used in various applications including identifying neuromuscular diseases, control signal for prosthetic devices, controlling machines, robots etc. The existing system commercial EMG-controlled devices are limited to rudimentary control capabilities of either discrete states (e.g. hand close/open), or one degree of freedom proportional control. The proposed system investigates the relationship between forearm electrical activity and forces exerted by the fingertips. This system is used to calculate the muscular force while lifting, pulling, pushing the object in Hot Rolling Mill with the help of electromyography. The load cell is used to calculate the force exerted by the fingertips of the human. The value of the force exerted is displayed by using the LCD. A threshold force value is fixed and it is compared with the actual force exerted by the human being. If the actual force exceeds the threshold value human beings will be affected in a way like sprain and bone rubbing etc., so an alarm is provided to indicate this situation to avoid the above mentioned accidents. The proposed system is simulated by using keil C and the simulated results are verified.

The purpose of this study was to measure the lateral abdominal muscles (LAM) in stroke patients and the healthy adults and compare the symmetry and contracted ratio of LAM thickness of two groups. Twenty-six stroke patients and 35 healthy adults were participated. The thicknesses of transverse abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) muscles on the paretic/non-paretic (left/right) sides were measured by using ultrasonography during contraction and rest period. After measurements, we calculated symmetry and contracted ratio of LAM. Comparison of symmetric ratio of the two groups showed significant difference in all abdominal muscles, but not EO during contraction. Comparison of contracted ratio of the two groups showed significant difference in TrA, but not IO and EO. This study was investigated an asymmetry of LAM and decline of contracted ratio of TrA in stroke patients. These results revealed that recovery of TrA is needed for stroke patients. Further study on specific exercise for recovery of TrA in stroke patients will have to be conducted.

Total medical expenses were about KRW 131,000, Western and Oriental medicine expenses were about KRW 50,000, and health supplement expenses were about KRW 24,000. Medical service expenses were approximately KRW 42,000 and health and medical supplies and devices expenses were analyzed to be KRW 7,000. Multi-regression analysis results, all item expenses rose as expenditure size, which is income’s surrogate variable, increased. More family members living together had a significant influence on total health and medical expenses, as the number of chronic diseases increased, it became a factor in the increase of total health and medical expenses and Western and Oriental medicine expenses. The findings in this study have significance in that the health and medical expenses factors of Korean public pension recipients have been analyzed.

Robot-assisted MIDCAB and Endoscopic coronary artery bypass (TECAB) operations are being performed with the DaVinci system. In this paper, we propose an adaptive feedback linearization control scheme (AFC) for continuous-time,multiple input-multipleoutput (MIMO) linear time-varying uncertain robotic system. The AFC consists of a fuzzy controller with adaptivemechanism to reconstruct the system states using the trackingerror and to make the state error reach the equilibrium point ina finite time period quickly. The sliding surface is first employedto represent the state error to reach the equilibrium point ina finite time period using adaptive theory. Then, a fuzzy controller usingsliding surface is developed to achieve the feedback linearization control performanceand the state tracking errors performance quickly. The reachingmode of the uncertain system using the proposed fuzzy sliding surface adaptive feedback linearization controller is guaranteed. Moreover, thechatteringaround the slidingsurface for the proposedcontrolcan bereduced. This method has an acceptable accuracy regarding to three nonlinear method; sliding surface technique, fuzzy logic and feedback linearization method. Therefore it can guarantee the performance of multi degrees of freedom joint in robot-assisted MIDCAB.

Emotional intelligence (EI) has been highlighted as an important theoretical and practical construct. The attributes of EI are important for overall well-being and influence our ability to succeed in life. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the emotional intelligences and coping strategies in nursing students. The participants were 219 college students in Daejeon, Korea. All the students were administered two instruments, the EI and Korea version in coping strategy Indicator (K-CSI) scale. Descriptive statistics t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlations technique were used to analyze the data with the SPSS Win 15.0 programs. Emotional intelligence was positively related to problem solving coping and social support seeking coping. The findings suggest that increased feelings of control and emotional competence assist nursing students to adopt active and effective coping strategies when dealing with stress.

Environmental awareness is increasing all over the world. Concerns about the effects of global warming, such as rising sea levels, are inspiring growing interest in clean energy. The Fukushima nuclear disaster made renewable energy appear to be the main energy source of the future. This paper estimates the value of renewable energy as a substitute for nuclear energy by inferring Korean customers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for it. We use the contingent valuation methodology (CVM) to determine the WTP of renewable energy and thereby estimate its value. We also identify the direct and social factors that influence the WTP and study the relationships between them through multiple regression analysis. The per capita value of renewable energy is found to be 38,921 won, and renewable energy was found to be affected chiefly by ethical factors. Moreover, constructing renewable energy facilities instead of nuclear facilities would require an additional 40 trillion won (approximately), complicating the promotion of renewable energy generation in view of Korea’s public debt.
