This paper presents the development of a virtual patient simulation by a 3D talking head and its use by pharmacy students as a training aid for patient consultation. The paper concentrates on the virtual patient modeling, its synthesis with a speech engine and facial expression interaction. The virtual patient model is developed in three stages: building a personalized 3D face model; animation of the face model; and speech driven face synthesis. The model is used in conjunction with a training artificial intelligence module that creates several scenarios in which the student oral interview ability is assessed. The final evaluation phase is a randomized controlled trial at three partner universities: The University of Newcastle, Monash University and Charles Stuart University. It shows the potential to revolutionize the way pharmacy students’ training is conducted.

Childhood apraxia of speech(CAS) is considered as an impairment of purposeful speech movements and is generally defined as a disorder of motor planning or motor programming. There have been a variety of studies about CAS and the diagnostic criteria were set up in English-speaking countries, but studies about diagnostic criteria of CAS for Korean speakers are needed. The purpose of the study was to examine voice onset time (VOT) and its variability in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) compared to typically developing children. Twelve children with CAS aged 9-12 years old and 20 children who were age-matched participated in the study. This study measured VOT and variabilities of VOT during the production of /p' a/, /t' a/, /k' a/. For variability measures of VOT, each participant was asked to repeat speech tasks three times and the average value of the rates and its standard deviation were obtained The verification of the hypotheses was tested by using T-test of the significance level of 0.05.The results showed that the variability of VOT in CAS group was more significantly higher than control group. But VOT of /p' a/, /t' a/, /k' a/ between the experimental group and the control group was not significantly different. The results suggested that variability of VOT might be more distinctive speech feature to children with CAS than the VOT. This study is meaningful because of two points; one is that it was conducted to fit the characteristics of Korea language while English cases are revitalized in the domestic situation, and the other is that it could be utilized as a resource for subsequent studies.

The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between physical and cognitive functions and depressive symptoms in elderly women with dysmobility syndrome. For this study, data on 6,070 elderly women were used and 43 of these women had dysmobility syndrome. The tools used in this study were the Physical Functioning (PF) Scale, Mini-Mental State Examination-Korean Version (MMSE-K), and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D)-short form. The level of physical function was significantly lower in the dysmobility syndrome group than in the normal group equivalents. Depressiveepressive epressive epressive epressive symptoms symptoms symptoms symptoms symptoms were significantly negatively correlated with physical function and each of its sub-categories in the dysmobility syndrome group. Multiple regression analysis results indicated that the only predictor of depressive symptoms among elderly women with dysmobility syndrome was PF 5 (the muscle strength of the upper limbs, β = -3.031, P = 0.004), which explained 41.4% of the variance in depressive symptoms (F = 6.985, P < 0.001). The analysis of newly suggested dysmobility syndrome-related factors is expected to help assess health status of elderly people

The purpose of this study is to provide evaluation data to examine and verify the effectiveness of the materials through physiological comparison and analysis of the new prototype snowboard deck with the existing equipments. In order to achieve the purpose, blood lactate concentrations and energy metabolic variables were measured from the targeted snowboarders. Five male snowboarders (Slope-style) volunteered to participate in the experiment. The experiment was conducted in slope-style course of “W” Ski Resort located in Gangwondo, Korea. One prototype deck and two existing deck were chosen for analysis. Each subject performed three runs with each “B”, “S” and “Y” deck. Blood samples were collected twice from the finger-tip at rest and immediately after completing the run in order determine the lactate concentration. In order to analyze the energy metabolic variables i.e. heart rate (HR), oxygen uptake (VO2), metabolic equivalent (MET) and total energy consumption (TEE), portable wireless gas analyzer and Polar heart rate monitor was used at rest as well as during the run. The result obtained from the analysis showed increased blood lactate concentration as well as higher oxygen uptake (VO2) at the point of Lactate Threshold (LT) when performing runs by installing “B” and “Y” decks than “S”. Furthermore with the increase in speed, depletion of energy sources as well as increased concentration of muscle fatigue substance also appeared in “B” and “Y” deck than “S” where blood lactate concentration and oxygen uptake are indicators of mobilization capacity of lactic acid system during energy metabolism.
