This study analyzed the error patterns and causes of errors in the writing task of Mongolian Korean learners, and discussed ways to educate Mongolian Korean learners more efficiently based on this. Mongolian Korean learners had a high frequency of insulated errors in the Korean ruptured sound series in phoneme notation errors, because there was no aspiration and fortis errors in Mongolian. The frequency of postposition errors was lower than that of other languages because Mongolian has a case ending, but the use should be accurately educated because Korean surveys and Mongolian are not 1:1 correspondence. Although the frequency of errors was low because there were mothers in Mongolian. The error frequency was low because there were ending in Mongolian, but the error was high in the way of expressing tenses. lexicon has different meanings even if the lexicon in Korean is not in Mongolian, so it is necessary to educate the exact meaning of lexical Meaning. This study is meaningful in that it analyzed various errors and causes of errors, and presented the direction of Korean language education for Mongolian Korean learners, although there were not many Mongolian Korean learners.

Writing tasks are important instruments to improve students’ writing performance. This means that language teachers need to understand what writing tasks are proper for students and what tasks are not. There, however, have been scant researches that investigated how researchers can help pre-service teachers to make high quality writing tasks. The purpose of this study was to find out how pre-service Korean language teachers design writing tasks, what elements they regard and what traits they revealed in the process of making writing tasks. The result of this research showed that participants composed writing tasks with elements demanded in texts such as ‘theme’, ‘audience’, ‘purpose’, ‘contents’, ‘mode and expression’ and ‘genre’, and requirements for student writers as ‘thought’, ‘using information’, ‘performing process-centered writing’ and ‘performing above writing’. Second, participants were affected by various elements, especially factors about learning, ‘student writers’ learning’, ‘traits of student writers’ and ‘considering conditions of writing task performing’, when they compose writing tasks. Third, there was a gap between the purpose of building writing tasks and authentic writing tasks participants made. From these results, the suggestions of this study are as follow. First, more various elements comprising writing tasks should be explored. Second, the usefulness of each type of writing task has to be verified in diverse perspectives. Third, teacher education curriculum that help pre-service teachers understand student writers’ interest or level of ability to use them in making writing tasks is needed. Fourth, pre-service teachers need more sufficient experiences bridging their intention to make tasks and the authentic tasks they make.
The Relationship between the Integrated Writing Task and Strategy Use in L2 Instruction KCI 등재

The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between the integrated writing tasks and strategy use in L2 learning depending on the different proficiency levels. Sixty university students were classified into two groups—the lower proficiency group and the higher proficiency group—based on their general English performance with 30 students for each group. For the study, the integrated reading-to-write task and the strategy inventory for integrated writing questionnaire were administered to gauge the learners’ writing outcomes and writing strategy use in general. The results revealed that there was a significant difference in the self-regulatory strategy use between the two groups. The findings also demonstrated writing test scores and test-wiseness strategy showed a positive correlation in the lower proficiency group while these two variables indicated a negative correlation in the higher proficiency group. Pedagogical implications were made based on the results.

While the importance of task sequencing in task-based research and syllabus design has been emphasized, there is a gap in the literature regarding whether the order in which tasks are presented actually has a significant impact on L2 performance. The aim of the study was to investigate whether task sequencing actually had an effect on L2 written performance. A writing task with three levels of task complexity was given to 88 EFL learners, with one group carrying the three task versions out in the order of increasing task complexity (Simple-to-complex), and the other group in the order of decreasing task complexity (Complex-to-simple). It was found that the cognitive load of the task, as well as learners’ syntactic complexity and lexical diversity shown in their L2 writing, were significantly affected by task sequencing and its interaction with task complexity. Pedagogical implications are noted with regard to the differential effects that task sequencing has on L2 writing, as presenting tasks in the order of increasing task complexity resulted in greater syntactic complexity, while presenting tasks in decreasing task complexity led to greater lexical diversity.

Although recent studies of L2 writing development have called for the inclusion of metrics that measure phrasal embedding as well as clausal embedding as indicators of syntactic complexity, taskbased research on L2 written performance still shows a heavy dependence on length-based measures and clausal subordination. In this study, the written performance of 81 Korean learners of English was examined using traditional syntactic measures that most task-based studies rely on, clausal complexity measures, and noun phrasal complexity measures. Participants were randomly assigned to either a Closed group that carried out closed tasks (i.e., tasks with a predetermined answer), or an Open group that carried out open tasks (i.e., tasks without a predetermined answer). Task complexity was manipulated in terms of the number of elements. Generally in line with Kyle and Crossley’s findings (2018), the study revealed that including more encompassing measures of syntactic complexity helped in the understanding of learners’ interlanguage development, especially when considering their level of L2 proficiency.

While previous pre-task planning (PTP) studies tended to adopt a quantitative method (testing, survey), examining its effects on linguistic measures of fluency, accuracy, and complexity, qualitative studies that explored students’ perceptions of PTP in practicing L2 writing have been scarce. In an attempt to bridge this gap, this qualitative study, including students’ essays, their reflections, and semi-interviews, was adopted for data collection. A total of three EFL college Vietnamese students were qualified to collect data for in-depth analysis. The findings show that students of various levels of English all have positive perceptions of PTP, which helps them reduce cognitive demand and manage time while writing. In addition, PTP has a measurable influence on the quality of writing with regard to higher-level writing skills (content, organization of ideas) in general. For example, students provide relevant information and develop ideas with specific examples in their written performance. It should be noted, however, that composition teachers should consider providing students with explicit instructions and training on how to do PTP appropriately. Students will then know how to apply PTP effectively to their writing practice based on their learning styles. These pedagogical benefits and practical concerns are discussed.

Despite a myriad of studies documenting the educational benefits of digital storytelling (DST) on EFL learners’ language mastery, the majority of the research is not grounded in the theory of L2 instruction, say task based language teaching (TBLT). To fill this void, this action research involving 28 students investigated the efficacy of collaborative DST-based task in an Indonesian EFL writing classroom. Anchored in collaborative TBLT methodology instruction of Willis (1996) that met a set of task criteria coined by Ellis (2009), this study aimed to unveil the effect of collaborative DST-based task on the students’ writing skills; how the students perceived the use of the learning approach; and the challenges they encountered. The statistical evidence indicates that there was a significant difference on the students’ pre- and post-writing scores, which indicates that the use of collaborative DST-based task significantly improved students’ writing skills. The writing students perceived that the learning design could promote their English Language skills Development, engagement, motivation, and interpersonal relation. Another finding revealed that the students found the technological and pedagogical circumstances were their challenges. This study offers implications and recommendations for future research and practices for marrying TBLT and technology in ELT classrooms.

Most task-based research examined the effects of task complexity on various aspects of L2 production, and this study aims to perform an in-depth analysis of task complexity effects on error patterns observed in L2 writing in terms of morphological, lexical, syntactic, and mechanical errors. 39 learners of English carried out one written task with three levels of task complexity, operationalized as the number of elements. Results of a series of repeated-measures ANOVAs revealed that greater task complexity led to significant increases in the amount of all four error types and the numbers of morphological, lexical, and local syntactic errors per T-unit. It was also found that learners are more likely to make errors in terms of plurality, word choice, and article use when they need to mention more elements when carrying out complex tasks.

The Effect of Task Complexity on English Language Learners’ Writing Performance KCI 등재
21세기영어영문학회 영어영문학21 제34권 4호 2021.12 pp.477-499
This study aims to investigate the comparative effects between simple and complex tasks on lexical diversity, lexical complexity, and syntactic complexity in learners’ English writing performance. Two task complexity dimensions are focused on: the amount of information (+/-Few element) and the use of tense (+/-Here-and-Now) in the task. For the data collection, thirty-one Korean college students were asked to perform four different narrative tasks based on a wordless cartoon. The results revealed that the complex task (-Few element & -Here-and-Now) showed a higher level of lexical diversity and lexical complexity than the simple task (+Few element & +Here-and-Now). In the case of syntactic complexity, the dimension of +/-Here-and-Now caused significantly different uses of the gerund and passive voice. The findings suggest that English language teachers need to control the complexity of narrative tasks when assigning English writing to university-level learners.

This classroom-based study investigated how task manipulation would affect second language learners’ interactional patterns in video-conferenced collaborative writing task. In Zoom-mediated courses in a university in Hong Kong, 22 students collaboratively wrote suggestions for improvements to their peers’ lesson plans using Office 365. To examine the impact of different task features on learners’ interactional patterns, the suggestion-giving task was manipulated in terms of discoursestructural demands (i.e., listing bullet-pointed sentences vs composing a coherent letter) and interactional demands (i.e., working in a pair vs working in a group of three or four). Data came from audio-recordings of the students’ peer collaborations and responses to a post-task survey. The results revealed that students rated writing a coherent letter considerably more demanding than writing bulletpointed sentences, resulting in fewer discussions on how to improve a given lesson plan. In addition, the students’ discussions were predominantly meaning-based with very little focus on the target language use. The findings of this study cast light on the importance of careful task design when implementing video-conferenced collaborative writing tasks.

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of peer feedback combined with different task sequences on written performance in actual large-sized classrooms motivated by several problems in previous peer feedback studies—validity concerns in research design, peer feedback as only productoriented activity, the lack of effects of feedback on detailed written performance, and primary focus on affective and writing quality. A total of 89 undergraduates were divided into two groups: peer feedback in simple-complex task sequence (PSC) and peer feedback in complex-simple task sequence (PCS). The study employed eleven general and specific measure indices of syntactic complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The findings were that peer feedback influenced accuracy and fluency, and task sequence influenced syntactic complexity. The PSC increased general and specific accuracy, but decreased fluency, whereas the PCS increased general and specific syntactic complexity, specific accuracy, and fluency. Overall, peer feedback in a simple-complex task sequence improved accuracy in an extended manner, and peer feedback in complex-simple task sequence improved various aspects of written performance. The study suggests peer feedback could be a feasible way to improve actual written performance even in large writing classes when task sequences and task complexity are involved with peer feedback.

This study aims to investigate to what extent pre-task planning and the source text type(genre) affect Korean English as a Foreign Language (EFL) college learners’ summary writings in terms of lexical, sentential, and discourse-level features. A total of 120 summary writings of cause/effect expository texts and argumentative texts in the different modes of planning were collected and analyzed using a computational assessment tool, Coh-Metrix. The results show that the participants’ summary writings in the different planning conditions and text types were statistically different according to their lexical-level (the mean word length, word frequency, imageability, concreteness, the third person pronouns), sentential-level (the mean sentence length, causal connectives, temporal connectives, noun density, Flesch-Reading Ease (FRE), Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL)), and discourse-level (type-token ratio, LSA cosines for all and adjacent sentences) features. This study provides some pedagogical implications for teaching English summary writings of various planning contexts and source text types.
The current study aims to develop and validate the latent factors underlying Korean EFL college students’ enjoyment and boredom, and also explores how these two factors are presented depending on writing task types in an English writing context. This study consists of two experimental phases. Experiment 1 recruited 437 students from diverse majors to investigate writing enjoyment and boredom factors. Experiment 2 employed 71 students to examine the effects of writing task types on emotional variables. They were assigned to two writing task groups: individual continuation writing group (ICWG) and collaborative continuation writing group (CCWG). The results of the study indicate that the following five factors are key to English writing enjoyment: interest and enjoyment in writing, external motivation and learning environment, teacher variables, writing tasks, and interest toward English-speaking cultures. English writing boredom includes five factors: indifference and boredom in writing, low interest in writing tests and tasks, teacher and class atmosphere, anxiety in writing, and indifference toward English-speaking cultures. This study also reveals that learners in the CCWG showed higher enjoyment and lower boredom than those in the ICWG. In addition, CCWG performed better writing achievement than ICWG. Based on the outcomes, pedagogical implications and suggestions are given for L2 writing classrooms.

The present study examines the effects of manipulating cognitive task complexity on high school English learners’ narrative and persuasive writing. Participants were 156 high school students. They were divided into four groups. Each group was given one of four different types of writing that were classified based on their genres (narrative vs. persuasive writing) and dimensions of task complexity (resource-directing vs. resource-dispersing). All participants completed both simple and complex writing tasks for their assigned type of writing. Participants’ written products were measured in terms of complexity, accuracy, and fluency. The results revealed that increased task complexity, along with the resource-directing dimension, somewhat positively affected the complexity, accuracy, and fluency of both narrative and persuasive writing. However, increased task complexity, along with the resource-dispersing dimension, showed differential effects of cognitive complexity on participants’ written products between the genres. It resulted in decreased scores in fluency and accuracy, and had no significant impact on the complexity of narrative writing. As for persuasive writing, on the other hand, it lowered the fluency, increased the complexity, and had no impact on the accuracy. The pedagogical suggestions drawn from the results are provided along with the limitations of the study.

In this study, in order to reveal how Japanese learners with different languages acquire access surveys “kara” and “node”, the use trend was analyzed by task type and the effect of the task on distinctive use was analyzed. Through the analysis of this study, the following learning trends could be confirmed. (1)The acquisition of “kara/node” by Japanese learners is centered on “kara” regardless of the type of task. However, compared to speech tasks, there is a relatively strong tendency to use “node” in writing tasks. (2)The acquisition of “kara/node” by Japanese learners shows generally similar patterns regardless of the learner's mother tongue. In other words, “kara/node” can be said to be a grammar item with a universal acquisition process. (3)In the acquisition of “kara/node” by Japanese learners, units by combination with stylistic elements are observed, and these units are formed differently depending on the type of task. (4)Position factors within sentences are involved in the acquisition of Japanese learners' kara/node, and the tendency to use distinctively appears regardless of the task. (5)The unit that appears in the acquisition of “kara/node” of Japanese learners appears more clearly in the speech task than in the writing task.

“Differential Effects of Oral Metalinguistic Feedback Given during English Writing Task Performance and Written Metalinguistic Feedback Given after English Writing Task Performance.” Studies in English Language & Literature. 38.3 (2012): 165-196. This study examined whether there would be any difference between the effect of oral and written metalinguistic feedback on learners' accurate use of some English verb tenses in their written production. To help low intermediate-proficiency Korean university students improve the ability to use the simple past, present progressive, and present perfect tense correctly in their written production, oral and written metalinguistic feedback was used. The oral group was provided with oral metalinguistic feedback while the learners were performing a translation task. The written metalinguistic group was provided with written metalinguistic feedback one week after a translation task was completed. The control group received no corrective feedback. The study showed both oral and written metalinguistic feedback had a significant effect on promoting the correct use of the target verb tenses in written production and that oral metalinguistic feedback had a significantly superior effect than written metalinguistic feedback due to differences between oral and written corrective feedback. It was concluded that oral metalinguistic feedback given during writing task performance can be more effective than written metalinguistic feedback given after writing task performance in helping learners gain greater control over already partially acquired forms in their written production and therefore can improve their writing accuracy.
