The purpose of this paper is to review the outcomes of the Korean vocabulary education studies and suggest the future direction in the vocabulary education research. This paper first attempts to analyse previous studies ​​in the Korean education by subject and chronological order and also investigate trends in research methodology. To this end, this paper first has examined the history of Korean vocabulary education and analysed foreign and domestic vocabulary education studies and their research methodology. A meta-analysis has been conducted on foreign studies researching vocabulary education history. As for domestic studies, this paper has reviewed 785 Korean education major journals and dissertation papers and conducted an analysis according to the subject and the detailed area. This paper finds that the vocabulary education research accounts for large proportion of previous studies. The domestic research has shown continued interest in vocabulary studies from the beginning up to recent studies while overseas research has recently raised its interest in this area. In regards to contents, foreign research has put an emphasis on issue- specific studies in vocabulary learning and teaching whereas the domestic research has focused on teaching database construction and learners’ vocabulary knowledge based on the existing lexicology area. As a result, the educational research has been made less domestically compared to the overseas research. In terms of research methodology, literature reviews have accounted for major proportion and, corpus studies and experimental studies have followed respectively. Relative to foreign research, domestic studies lack in experimental research and have also shown weakness in multiple rest experimental study method. This paper may contribute to future vocabulary education in that it reviews research achievements in vocabulary education both home and abroad, points out methodological problems and explore the future direction of vocabulary education.

Quite some of language phenomena in modern Korean language that cannot be easily explained by formal rules or principles can be explained through the understanding of language facts in previous generations. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to prepare basic data for the preparation of significant grammar teaching methods utilizing the knowledge of the history of Korean language for grammar learning in the deepening stage by foreign learners specializing in Korean language (Korean grammar) in universities for academic purposes by selecting those grammar items that have undergone the process of grammaticalization or remain in fossilized forms among grammatical phenomena in modern Korean language and approach them in diachronic perspectives to analyze the word forms. To utilize the knowledge of the history of Korean language in Korean grammar teaching/learning activities, above all, teachers should have background knowledge of the history of Korean language. If teachers prepare efficient teaching/learning methods actively utilizing the knowledge and apply the methods to grammar classes, the learners will go one step further from simple memorization of grammatical phenomena in modern Korean language to systematically and macroscopically understand the history of Korean language and it also seems meaningful in terms of Korean language culture learning.

This study aims at, the first, looking into existed approaches for syntactic binary parameter, the second, clarifying many problems awaiting solution, the third, suggesting alternatives. The chapter 1 clarifies the characteristics of parameter. The principles of universal grammar should be restricted ultimately as possible as it can and preserve the binary system of parameter settings which are manifested to only one of two constituents which are composed of parameter setting in order to help the children to acquire specific language in a short time. The concept of binary parameter setting be closely connected with universal principle of illusion. It also implies the one constituent is marked and the others unmarked. The chapter 2 digs up the approaches of parameter. The view of parameter divided largely into two. The one is binary parameter’s one and multi parameter’s one. The chapter 3 analyzes various language phenomena which seems to have multi attributes outwardly. The chapter 3.1 analyzes various language phenomena related to syntactic head direction. This chapter make clear the concept of binary system are unrepealed only if we understand the parameter are divided to two, parameter participating in “language to language” parameter and only participating inter language phenomena. The latter has property of time variance which triggers complementary relationship maintaining binary system. 3.2 analyzes various language phenomena related to syntactic PRO. This chapter make also clear the concept of binary system are unrepealed if we introduces universal principle of illusion, time variance acceptability, the parameter in conceptual intention system, and complementary relationship.

가치 계승 목적 한국어의 개념 정립 및 범주 설정

The purpose of the paper is for organize the concept for a new type of Korean education called “Korean for Valuable-inheritance Purpose” and set the type for the learners. Until now, the Korean education was beginning with the study of Korean for the general purpose and study for specific purpose of Korean are constantly being made. Particularly increase of the foreign students due to the academic purpose for Korean Studies, Which are being actively investigated. The purpose of their main learning objectives is admitted into the college or continues the study after the college admission within Korean. However, one of the most features appeared in the current Korean education is emergence of most diverse of learners. In other words, there will be providing right type of education depends on purpose of learning Korean and it will provide a new type of learner that it will fit. In this paper, the ‘Korean for Valuable-inheritance purpose’ proposed as a new type of Korean language in Korean education. In other words, the purpose of learning Korean language for learners will be different type. K.V.P learners’ main learning objective is not for admission to Korean University or being employed to Korean company. These spiritual values of Korean culture through learning Korean can be seen the main purpose. Korean is provided to not only a passing knowledge of language and passing a worthy of Korean culture can be seen as a big sense. In this paper, we set up the categories as K.V.P. is being studied in the existing Korean as a Heritage Language and Korean as a Cultural Heritage, and the categories were set to present. K.H.L is the Korean language targets to the overseas Koreans for the Korean studies, which is conducted in the educational field and K.C.H is the cases, which is presented in this paper through a new area. K.C.H. is called contrasting personality with overseas Korean learners. Learning Korean spiritual values and language are same; however, learning contents, methods, and objectives are differ from overseas Korean learners. In this paper, a new type of Korean education called ‘K.V.P’ presents the concept of the category for a group of students while set a new learning approaches for the type to be evaluate.

This study aims to survey researches regarding teaching and learning of pronunciation utilizing experimental phonetics. Until the 1990s, contrastive analysis and some phonological theories have long constituted an important domain of research regarding teaching and learning of pronunciation. However, development of experimental phonetics influences strongly on researches regarding teaching and learning of pronunciation. This results in a great increase of research which is based on experimental phonetics related to teaching and learning of Korean pronunciation in the academic publication in 2000s. The rapid growth about teaching and learning of pronunciation related to experimental phonetics would be thanks to Praat which is easy to use without theoretical background or pre-education for use. Praat is a speech analyser which can download through the internet at free of charge, and has various functions such as the measurement of VOT, CD, the values of formant, and providing the contour line of intonation on its spectrogram. Kalvin is a Korean version of Alvin, and is used to evaluate the pronunciation accuracy and audition ability of foreign language learners. In this paper, researches regarding teaching and learning of pronunciation utilizing experimental phonetics are briefly introduced, focusing on the researches using Praat and Kalvin.

언어맥락적 상세화와 협동적 출력 과제를 통한 한국어 완료상 교수 방안 연구

The study attempts to provide the explicit information and form-focused tasks for teaching Korean perfect aspect markers, ‘-e iss-’, ‘-ko iss-’, and ‘-ess-’. The analysis on the current Korean text books has shown that the information on Korean perfect aspect markers was presented in an isolated way and the tasks were confined only to pre-communicative activities on each markers. We found the need to differentiate the markers in terms of aktionsart and transitivity. The current study has presented four collaborative output tasks including the Dictogloss, Reconstruction cloze task, Text-editing task, and Collaborative output jigsaw task to facilitate the L2 learners’ meta-linguistic information, learner attention, and increase learner involvement.

This is a case study of the mentoring program conducted by students of K university in Gangwon Province in 2012 with children from multicultural families as mentees. The aim of this mentoring program was to search for an effective managing method of multicultural mentoring program. Data related to the 2012 multicultural mentoring business was analyzed, 5 participants of the mentoring program were interviewed to analyze the mentoring managing process and types of mentoring activities. Results showed that in the managing process, especially in the early stages, a lack of applicants and cursory mentor selection process, pre- training contents mostly related to administration, difficulty in matching due to restrictions in distance lead to a start with a problem which was ‘inadequate resources’. In the level of activity there were various problems such as mentees actions of not being punctual and receptive, the distance to the mentoring area being too far which lead to restrictions in activities, in the calculation stage, due to these problems the average hours of mentoring totaled 71.08 which is very little. There were four types in terms of relationships, active types, effort types, passive type and giving up type. Success factors included mentees personality, competence of mentor in terms of multinationals, proximity and convenience of activity, interest and level of cooperation of mentee’s school and family. For the effective execution of multicultural mentoring, increased support for the expanding of capability of mentors, more cooperation and interest from the families and schools of mentees, continuous support and management of mentoring activities were suggested.

말뭉치를 기반으로 한 ‘기쁘다’와 ‘즐겁다’의 사용 패턴 비교 연구

This paper aims to analyse and compare the usage patterns of two emotional adjectives of ‘기쁘다’ and ‘즐겁다’ through corpus analysis as a case study to find out differences among synonymous words. The focus of this analysis is on revealing syntagmatic similarity and difference in syntactical patterns rather than on describing semantic difference of the words. We adopt conjugation, syntagmatic relations, and structural patterns as an analytical framework by referring to previous studies. The analysis results show that the two words, ‘기쁘다’ and ‘즐겁다’, have different frequencies in inflectional forms, which are in turn found to have a variety of similarity and difference in their collocations and grammatical patterns. This analysis of syntactical pattern of two synonymous words will pave the way for a new approach to Korean vocabulary teaching and learning, and contribute to the Korean lexicography by providing reliable materials related to the case frame and structural pattern of words.

발음 평가에 있어서 정확성, 유창성, 이해명료성, 이해가능성 기준 간의 영향 관계 연구

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships among segmental accuracy, suprasegmental accuracy (intonation), fluency of speech rate/pause, intelligibility and comprehensibility criterions in pronunciation assessment. These criterions are widely regarded as goals for second language teaching and testing for pronunciation. However, there is little empirical evidence about what these criterions are measuring in terms of actual pronunciation skills and how they influence each other or even whether they are related. So in this study, based on previous research, a Path Model was developed and evaluated to illustrate relationships among these criterions. The study found that there are significant strong correlations among accuracy, fluency, intelligibility and comprehensibility. But there was no direct effect found between suprasegmental accuracy and intelligibility or between suprasegmental accuracy and comprehensibility. However there was a direct effect found for both segmental accuracy and fluency of speech rate/pause on both intelligibility and comprehensibility. First, regression analysis revealed intelligibility accounted for R-squared 97% of variability in pronunciation scores for these two criterion. These two criterion, segmental accuracy(.51) and fluency of seech rate/pause(.50), related to intelligibility to a similar degree. Second, regression analysis showed comprehensibility accounted for R-squared 98% of variability in pronunciation scores for these two criterion. Fluency of speech rate/pause(.67) related to comprehensibility relatively higher than segmental accuracy(.18). Intelligibility was also related to comprehensibility but to a small degree(.17) in regards to semantic understanding.

This study aims to select educational connective endings of Korean for language learners. The connective endings connect antecedent clause with following clause logically and play a crucial role in understanding of Korean language. But there is a great diversity of connective endings and some of them have several meanings and functions, so Korean learners find it difficult to understand and use them. Therefore it is necessary to make a list of connective endings in priority order for educational purpose. This study examined data of dictionary for Korean learners, Korean teaching materials and the vocabulary list of TOPIK, and selected educational connective endings through investigating the balanced corpus (Written&spoken &semi-spoken), coverage, frequency(morphological frequency & meaning frequency & the use frequency of the auxiliary connective endings), etc. This study aims to make a educational list of connective endings, and provide a basic data for grading of connective endings.

The paper tries to analyze the words and sentences in modern short story with the basis of cognitive semantics and has the purpose to suggest the teaching-learning method for the advanced learners. The Korean learners who approached to the advanced level have learned new vocabulary so they can understand the deep meaning of the words as they approach to the various aspects in the established words. Since the common vocabulary expressed in the modern short story tends to have the connotation as a literary language, those words can be used as a specific and economic learning material. Moreover, when the connotation is connected with the tendency and specific aspects of the modern society, it can be applied effectively for planning Korean cultural education. Viewed from these perspectives, expressions in the modern short story are analyzed with the methods of cognitive semantics-Conceptual Metaphor theory and Frame semantics. It has the aim to approach to the topics showing contemporary social culture. This is not to have the distributive concept but to create the specific meaning through the social -cultural tool and metaphorical mechanism to help learner’s text interpretation ability. As each analyzed expressions are linked to the social-cultural backgrounds, the paper tries to show the possibility of the connection in Korean language and cultural education with the materials of language in novel.

다문화시대 한국인의 국민정체성 고찰

The purpose of this paper is to consider the possibility to reestablish the Korean identities appropriate to the era of multicultural societies. In order to reach this aim, we will try to analyse epistemologically the definition and the concept of national identity and compare it with those of national character. We will also try to understand how the national identity can be formed in the relation with traditional public cultures. Secondly, we will unscramble characteristics and types of South Koreans’ perceptions of national identity, measuring acceptance of foreign immigrants in Korea. Thus we will be able to recognize the tendency of South Koreans’ perceptions of national identity, which seems very antinomic. We will try to find out the main reason. And with the result of our analysis, we will propose how to reestablish our new national identity which shall be fit enough to corroborate the nationhood to the Koreans, without having racial conflicts, neither rejecting the psychodynamic identity based on the traditional culture of Korea. As the case stands, this study is expected to provide useful implications for enhancing capacity of social intergration and renew the concept of Koreanness.

세종학당 한국어 교육의 적절성에 관한 논의 - 교과과정을 중심으로 -

Sejonghakdang over the world uses a single name “The King Sejong Institute”. This article surveys curriculums of Sejonghakdang over the world. Specially we focused on Sejonghakdang of University-linked form. When Sejonghakdang foundation decided to support “The King Sejong Institute” it also supports the institute follow it’s own standard curriculum for teaching Korean language. We contacted with a person in charge 14 Sejonghakdang. And then we sent e-mail to the other person in charge. Surveying 14 Sejonghakdang through their website add to there. Finally we found out that all institutes have their own different curriculums. Term system is from 2 semesters to 5 semesters, one semester is between 6~ 22 weeks, hours per week are between 3∼15 hours, and the classes have the variety between 1 to 8. That means many institutes don’t follow the original standard curriculum of Sejonghakdang foundation. It is the necessary that make a standard form on the assumption that it manages flexible for their status. So we hand out two suggestions based on status analysis. Our recommendation is that “The King Sejong Institute” should be more professional and stick to the original standard curriculum if “The King Sejong Institute” over the world wants to be long-lasting. And if necessary, Sejonghakdang foundation should invest to manage the standard curriculum again and make a new policy for korean language education parts.

This research studies how situations are different when a speaker uses short type negation and long type negation. And the research explains the reason of negation selection by adopting Iconicity theory. Even though the basic meanings of short and long type negation are same, in the ordinary language life, the two negation types are used in different situation. While short type negation is used in subjective and private situation, long type negation is used in the objective and official situation. This research will help Korean language learners to recognize the difference of two types of negation and to use them correctly in the ordinary of language life. I hope that Korean language learners can speak strategically and correctly as their needs in every situation.

외국어 발음습득과 음운 지식에 대한 연구

This paper aims to provide some essential and substantial notions about phonological segments and systems or patterns of phonology of human languages with respect to acquisition of foreign language pronunciation. Learning pronunciation of a language differs from learning grammar or vocabulary of a language in many aspects, one of which is that the former, unlike the latter, not only requires cognitive aspects but also requires ergonomic aspects for the correct pronunciation. In relation with this, We show that how phonemes of the first language is different from those of second/foreign languages in terms of neuroscience. In addition, we urge that contrastive knowledge of phonemic and phonetic representations about native language and target language is required; further the notion of universal phonological systems of human language is discussed.
