Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the mediating effect of stress coping type and self-esteem between life stress and suicidal ideation in nursing college students. The research design was descriptive study. Methods: A set of self-reported questionnaires was completed by 197 nursing college students, including demographic characteristics, life stress, stress coping type, self-esteem, and suicidal ideation. Data was analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé’s test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis for mediating effect by SPSS ver. 22. Results: The mean age was 20.9 years. The mean scores were 2.4, 3.6, and 1.7 out of 5 Likert scales for items of life stress, self-esteem, and suicidal ideation, respectively. The mean score for stress coping type was 2.36 out of 4 Likert scales. There was a positive correlation between suicidal ideation and life stress related to tasks, life stress related to interpersonal relationship, and emotion-focused coping of stress coping type (r=.537, p<.01); while a negative correlation between self-esteem and suicidal ideation. emotional-focused coping of stress coping type had a partial mediating effect between life stress related to tasks and suicidal ideation. Also, self-esteem had a partial mediating effect between life stress related to tasks and suicidal ideation as well as between life stress related to interpersonal relationship and suicidal ideation. Conclusion: Based on the finding of this study, it is necessary to apply various program to stress coping skill and self-esteem in order to reduce suicidal ideation in nursing college students.

Purpose: The purposes of this study were to check the obesity of middle and high school students in the nation and identify factors influencing their obesity. Methods: The present study is a secondary analysis research that obtained permission to use the primitive data of 10th (2014) Online Survey on Adolescents' Health Behaviors by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and analyzed the primitive data according to the purposes. Results: The findings show that the BMI of middle and high school students in the nation was 20.7 kg/m2 with the obesity and non-obesity group recording 27.0 kg/m2 and 19.9 kg/m2, respectively. Factors influencing the obesity of adolescents include gender, grade, educational background of parent, school grades for the last 12 months, satisfaction with sleep, fast food consumption, ramen consumption, intense and muscle exercise three times a week or more, subjective sense of health, stress, suicidal ideation, and hours of Internet usage per week. Conclusion: For the management of adolescent obesity, there is a need for obesity management programs taking the characteristics of male students into consideration. The possibilities of obesity grow according to the grades, which means that both the teachers and parents should offer more guidance on weight control in upper grades. The adjustment of adolescent obesity requires psychological health management including stress and suicidal ideation as well as diet control and exercise. It is also needed to apply a stepwise obesity management program according to the hours of internet usage and dependence on the internet

Purpose: This study is intended to analyze factors of metabolic syndrome and vitamin D deficiency with resources obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) V conducted in 2010. Methods: The subjects were 870 adolescents aged from 10 to 18 who participated in the first KNHANES V. Secondary data analysis was done by Chi-square, ANOVA, correlation analysis and simple linear regression. Results: The influencing factors of metabolic syndrome were vitamin D, systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure, which were statistically significant. Simple linear regression was conducted to identify the influence of vitamin D on the factors related to metabolic syndrome, which showed that waist size (t=-1.97, p<.05), systolic blood pressure (t=-2.88, p<.01), and diastolic blood pressure (t=-5.72, p<.001) were influenced by vitamin D. In addition, each factor decreased by .131, .209, and .355, respectively, when vitamin D increased by one unit. Conclusion: Metabolic syndrome is a factor to be considered in order to improve adolescent health and form adolescent health behaviors. Schools, families, and local communities should cooperate with each other on the foundation of a regular health screening process and systematic health education programs. In addition, it is expected enhanced physical activities and sports club participation can prevent metabolic syndrome and increase vitamin D among adolescent.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between optimism, coping and peer relations on mental wellbeing in adolescents, and to identify contributing factors on their mental wellbeing. Methods: A total of 132 students recruited from two middle schools. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. Results: Adolescents' mental wellbeing was 4.23±0.84. Their mental wellbeing was significantly influenced by optimism (β=.44), peer relational skills (β=.21), and active coping (β=.20), explained 49.1% of the total variance. Conclusion: Considering the results of this study, optimism enhancement program for promoting adolescents' mental wellbeing should be builded. In addition, active coping skills and peer relational skills acquisition program need to be developed.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine effects of school-based alcohol prevention programs on drinking statuses of adolescents. Methods: The findings of this study was based on the data obtained from the '2015 11th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. The number of study subjects were 68,043. Results: It was figured that 35.6% of the study subjects had experienced school-based alcohol prevention programs within the last 12 months. As the students got older, the chances to participate in the programs decreased (p<.01). For both middle and high school students, current drinking rates for the educated was lower than those of the uneducated students(6.6% vs 8.0%; 22.2% vs 25.9%) and it was statistically significant. A similar pattern was found for high-risk drinking rates. Those educated showed lower rates than the uneducated with statistical significance of p<.001. In addition, the educated had lower problem drinking rate than the uneducated for both middle (p<.05) and high school students (p<.001). The results of logistic regression analysis showed that school-based alcohol prevention programs had statistically significant effect on current drinking status of adolescents (p<.05). However, it had significant effect only on high-risk drinking status of high school students (p<.05) and had no effect on problem drinking. Conclusion: This study addressed effectiveness of school-based adolescent alcohol prevention programs and that it is important to develop means to implement school health education.
