Hericium erinaceus (lion’s mane mushroom) is an edible and medicinal mushroom that belongs to the family Hericiaceae. It has been traditionally used for the treatment of memory impairment and gastrointestinal diseases. We previously reported hericene A as an anti-diabetic constituent of H. erinaceus and investigated the effect of cultivation substrates on its content. As the continuation, the contents of five major compounds, including hericenes A-D, which exhibit α-glucosidase inhibitory activity together with ergosterol, were investigated according to the cultivation stage. H. erinaceus was cultured for 5 stages to induce fruiting bodies, and the contents of the compounds at each stage were quantified through HPLC analysis. Among the major compounds the content of hericene A was the highest, followed by hericene C and the content of hericenes B and D was relatively low. The contents of four hericene derivatives are the highest at stage 4 whereas the content of ergosterol was highest at stage 5. The highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of H. erinaceus was at stage 4, which correlates with the contents of hericene derivatives. Conclusively, H. erinaceus with better efficacy and high content of active constituents can be secured by the optimization of cultivation conditions.

Elastomers are elastic polymers with various practical applications, including functional films, architectural soundproofing, cable insulation, shoe inserts, packaging, cushions, and rubber. Elastomers generate environmentally harmful substances such as volatile organic compounds during production and decomposition processes. To replace elastomers, Trametes oreintalis mycelium was grown on a substrate consisting of sawdust and rice bran, and pure mycelial material was subsequently separated. Additionally, physical/chemical treatment was performed on mycelium material..As a result, three proto-types of mycelium elastomer were produced: acetylation-based sample (ACHP), benzoylation-based sample (BCHP), and silane-based sample (SCHP). The mycelium elastomers were observed in the elastomer region of the material properties chart with young's modulus and density. Additionally, the surface characteristics of the mycelium elastomers were hydrophilic as confirmed by water contact angle, and it exhibited overall thermal stability up to 200°C. By further adjusting the properties, mycelium elastomer can function as eco-friendly material in certain industry, while reducing environmental pollution caused by existing production process and disposal
