Kang, Seok-Han. 2015. A Comparative Study on Accentual Patterns between Middle Korean and the current Jeju Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-1, 1-18. The study reports that bi- and tri- syllabic nouns in the Jeju dialect of Korean keeps phonetic features of Middle Korean tone types, whereas no relation was found in the mono-syllabic nouns. The experimental result on 104 nouns which classified by following Middle Korean tone types implies the importance of syllable structure in the tonal change. In this study, the accentual patterns of Jeju Korean follows those of Kyungnam dialect of Korean;low tones change into high accentual patterns, high tones into low patterns, and falling tones into high patterns. But the change occurs in the phonetic level, not in the phonology, in which the H accent could be realized as higher F0 and longer duration. This means that the phonological tone patterns change into the phonetic accent in multi-syllable words. In this study, we can find some possible relationship between Jeju Korean and Middle Korean. It implies that Middle Korean was not a real tonal language. (Konkuk University)

Kim, Sunyoung. 2015. The Research of the Construction 'adjective+-ge doeda'. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-1, 19-39. This paper examines the condition of the usage of 'adj+-ge doeda' which indicates the change of state. 'Adj+-ge doeda' is divided into the class of 'nolahge doeda' and the that of 'ganeunghage doeda.' The former shows the change of property while the latter shows the change of situation. In these cases 'Adj+-ge' modifies 'doeda', which functions as predicate. However, the major meaning of 'adj+-ge doeda' implies the change of situation. For this, 'doeda' combines with adj. that can show situational changes depending on external conditions. Furthermore, '-ge doeda' combines with the construction '-eo jida', when it goes with a conditional or causal clause. The construction '-ge doeda' is often used in oder to show events that have occurred regardless of speaker's will. (Sungshin women's University)

Kim, So-hee & Kang, Beom-mo. 2015. Characteristics and Changes of Hard News and Soft News in Newspaper Style - A Comparison of Politics, Economy, Society, and Culture News Corpora in the Early 2000s and the Early 2010s. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-1, 41-66. This paper aims to identify stylistic characteristics of hard news and soft news and to examine the stylistic changes of the news in recent years. In order to do this, we analyzed a large corpus (about 150 million words) statistically. We first classified a news corpus(Trend21) into two groups representing hard news and soft news (political/economic/social subjects vs. cultural subjects). Each group was classified again by the year of issue - the early 2000s and the early 2010s. And then, we extracted keywords from each group by means of keyword analysis. Finally, we conducted correspondence analysis and observed the result in a two-dimensional domain. We particularly focused on linguistic features which show stylistic characteristics of written and spoken language such as verbs and adjectives, predicate nouns (mostly Sino-Korean), personal pronouns, degree verbs (with empathic meanings). The result shows that the style of hard news is relatively similar to written language whereas the style of soft news is similar to spoken language. It also shows some stylistic changes in the news on political, economic and social affairs. The tendency is that hard news has become closer to soft news in style. (Korea University)

Kim, Jeong-Seok. 2015. Quantifier Sharing. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-1, 67-85. Since McCawley (1993), determiner sharing constructions have been in the spotlight. What is essential is that determiner sharing depends on Gapping and the shared determiner must be conjunct-initial. We first observe that quantifier sharing is possible in Korean. Following Kim (2011), we then argue that shared constituents can be linearized if they undergo movement out of the coordination site, which makes the shared position unpronounced. Since the shared position is not regulated by the LCA after movement, it causes no problem for PF linearization. (Korea University)

Park, Myung-Kwan. 2015. Cleft Sources for the Sluice and Identity in Ellipsis. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-1, 87-106. This paper investigates the controversial issue of developing a cleft structure analysis for the sluice that derives from Sluicing or TP ellipsis. We show that there are some constructions that require positing different types of cleft clause as the underlying structure of the sluice. Specifically, Sluicing/TP ellipsis in the p ∨ q construction of English is shown to apply to the inferential cleft clause. In Spanish or Polish, P-stranding is fed by Sluicing, which now applies to the truncated cleft clause. In English, Sluicing also applies after a preposition pied-piping wh-phrase moves out of a reduced cleft clause. Although all these three cases involve cleft clause for the sluice and non-cleft, declarative clause for its antecedent, we show that the clause type mismatch between cleft sluice and non-cleft antecedent clauses does not impinge on the identity condition on ellipsis, because the two elements, found additionally only in the cleft sluice clauses, such as the subject pronoun it and the inflected form of be, can be analyzed as a clausal anaphor referring to the antecedent of the sluiced clause, or a semantically-vacuous element. Lee, Seong Heon. 2015. Study of Syntactic and Semantic Properites of the Nouns of <Mouvement> in French : Construction of Their Object Classes. Korean Journal of Liguistics, 40-1, 107-134. This article will build a set of object classes for the nouns of <movement> in French, such as allée, venue, départ, arrivée, mouvement, déplacement, etc., which denote a movement of an objet between two places and which can be formally characterized by the appearance in the following three constructions : (Ⅰ) N0 Vsup Npréd [Prép + Nloc1] [Prép + Nloc2], (Ⅱ) N0 (accélérer + ralentir + freiner) Npréd et (Ⅲ) Npréd (rapide + lent). In so doing, it will be shown that these nouns can be well described, and in particular that their correlation with support verbs and their heterogeneous syntactic and semantic properties can be best explained with the theory of object classes based on two syntactic criteria : appropriate and general operators. Lee, Juyoung. 2015. A Study on the Vowel Changes of Indonesian Rhythmic Reduplication. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-1, 135-150. This paper aims to analyze the vowel changes of rhythmic reduplication in Indonesian. This paper shows that the vowel changes of Indonesian rhythmic reduplication can be elucidated explanatorily based on phonesthemes, directionality, locality, maximization, and derived meanings. More specifically, this paper argues that the vowel changes occur grounded on vowel phonesthemes ‘/i/-/a/-/u/' and locality which does not allow changes between /i, (e)/ and /u, o/. In addition, this paper shows that the position of reduplicants is determined by directionality of the vowel changes and their derived meanings. Furthermore, this paper proposes that maximization of vowel changes is required to iconically express diversity. (Hasanuddin University)

Lee, Jisoo. 2015. The Generative Semantic Description of the Incompleteness Effects in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-1, 151-167. This paper examines various incompleteness effects in Korean. It has relevance to its events structure, particularly the Head-feature of the event(Pustejovsky 1995) and semantic feature for events and their objects. We assume that the incompleteness effect is motivated by result implicature when Head is assigned to e1. Incompleteness effect doesn't occur in punctual event whose Head is assigned to e2. In case durative but non-gradual event, it has polysemous nature in terms of underspecification of Head-value. Further, this paper shows affecting factors of result implicature, such as causality between e1 and e2, context and an object as an end product. (Seoul National University)
