Min, Myungsook, Jun, Jongsup, & Lee, Sun-Young. 2014. A Study on the English-speaking Children’s Acquisition of Adjectival Compounds Based on CHILDES Corpus. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 405 -425. This Study investigates English-speaking children’s acquisition of adjectival compounds based on the CHILDES(Child Language Data Exchange System) Corpus. The type and token frequencies and type per token ratios(TTRs) for adjectival compounds including compound nouns and compound adjectives were analyzed with reference to children’s age groups. The results showed that children started using adjectival compounds as early as at age one and that the developmental pattern of the adjectival compounds conformed to the general principles of word formation repertoire such as semantic transparency, formal simplicity and productivity. Park, Myung-Kwan & Li, Zhen-Xuan. 2014. Copula and ‘Sluicing' Constructions in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 427-452. This paper starts with resolving the categorial mismatch in the Cleft construction between the subject cleft clause and the focal pivot/question phrase survivor that are linked by the copula. We propose that the Cleft construction universally has bi-clausal structure, where the second cleft clause (which is the complement of the copula) undergoes ellipsis after the focal pivot/question phrase survivor extracts out of it. This conception of Cleft provides an optimal account for the language-particular distributions of the copula in embedded or matrix‘Sluicing' in East Asian languages such as Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. It also captures the optional occurrence of the pronoun subject that replaces the first cleft clause. In addition, Case marker or pre-/post-position drop or retention and the distribution of adjectival question phrases before the copula follow from the proposed analysis. All in all, the unified Cleft analysis of‘Sluicing' is shown to be effective in understanding ‘Sluicing' in the three languages. (Dongguk University)

An, Young-ran. 2014. A Cognitive Analysis of Phrasal Verb Take on. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 453-484. Cognitive linguistics is an approach to language that is based on our experience of the world and the way we perceive and conceptualize it. This kind of a particular conception of grammatical structure has run counter to the traditional view. About an utterance, “My car has broken down,” the traditional linguists would attempt to parse the meanings of the words used and go on to analyze the clause pattern, and so on. All these efforts are to converge into a tome of logical rules for generating the grammatically correct and semantically acceptable sentences. Unlike this trend, there have been efforts to found the root of all this linguistic discussion, which is called the cognitive grammar. This paper investigates the meaning of phrasal verb, take on, inter alia, in order to show how the cognitive grammar fits well in defining the meanings of words and phrases. The ultimate goal is to countenance the claim of the cognitive linguistics that the meanings of words and the ways of their combinations depend on the perception and categorization of the real world around us. Liu, Rong-Rong. 2014. A Study on the Meaning of the Perception Verb ‘poda’: Focusing on the Aspectual Meaning. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 485-504. The purpose of this paper is to make a point that 'poda' should be divided into ‘poda1’ which indicates activity and ‘poda2’ which indicates state. ‘poda1’ has the features of activity, intention and duration, while ‘poda2’ which expresses instantaneous visual contact has the features of fortuity, passivity and instantaneite. This semantic difference about ‘poda1’ and 'poda2' has a effect on their aspect. We can prove the necessity of distinguishing 'poda1' from 'poda2' by the combination of ‘poda’ and some adverbs such as 'ilbureo‘, ’kyesok‘, ’uyeonhi‘, temporal adverbs such as ‘T-tongan’, ‘T-mane’, endings such as ‘-ko issda’, ‘-eo issda’, imperative sentences, ‘-lyeogo hada’ or negative sentences. Especially, 'poida‘ can also be used to indicate state besides ‘poda2', and form corresponding relation with ‘poda2’ only, but not ‘poda1’. Furthermore, according to the aspectual properties of ‘poda‘, ‘poda1‘ can be defined as an activity verb, while ‘poda2‘ can be defined as an achievement verb. Both the composition verbs including ‘poda’ as a component and the comparison with Chinese can also be helpful to proving the rationality of distinguishing ‘poda1’ and ‘poda2’. Yoon, Jeong-Me. 2014. Variations in the Wh-island Effects of Wh-in-Situ in Korean - A Garden Path Approach. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 505-547. Although wh-in-situ in Korean are known to show wh-island effects, there exist various environments where they show no wh-island effects. No satisfactory accounts are available for all the cases, and the goal of this paper is to show that there is a way to explain them once we recognize that wh-in-situ questions with a non-local wh-Q association, under the processing approach to island effects, are garden path sentences and that what is called the wh-island effects of wh-in-situ in Korean is not the ungrammaticality of wh-in-situ questions with a non-local wh-Q association but the high likelihood of misinterpreting such questions as having the local scope. Once we do so, explaining the variations in wh-island effects can be recast as explaining the variations in misinterpretation rates, and I explain them by first identifying various factors contributing to the (un)likelihood of misinterpretation and then showing that all the observed variations can be explained in terms of them. Kim, Yong-Myeong. 2014. A Q-Sequence on the Local and the Economy Principle. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 549-573. This study explores a research question; what principle governs the development of interrogatives? As a possible answer to this question, this study proposes what we call the Force Realization Hierarchy on the Economy Principle (Chomsky, 1991), which quantifies the degree of the relative complexity on syntactic operations and movements resulting from realizing and matching sentential forces. From a corollary of the hierarchy, this study derives a developmental sequence of interrogatives called the Q-Sequence. The sequence constitutes an implicational scale of a number of discrete Q-stages in terms of the hierarchy: the Declarative Question Stage, the Topical Question Stage, the Focal Question Stage, and the Indirect Question Stage. On each stage of the sequence, each relevant syntactic mechanism operates sequentially in terms of the Locality Condition (LC) and the X-bar formats of the Minimalist program (Chomsky, 1992). Finally, the study demonstrates that each stage of the Q-Sequence is probed on the basis of the interlanguage (IL) data by drawing on syntactic gaps between the triggering force and the triggering cue (Kim, 2006). In conclusion, the Force Realization Hierarchy can function as a syntactic principle which governs the development of interrogatives and constitutes the Q-Sequence. Lee, Sang-Geun. 2014. A Cross-linguistic Research on Subject-oriented Resultative Constructions. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 575-595. This paper aims to thoroughly examine subject-oriented resultatives in English to explain an intra-linguistic difference in their syntactic distribution, and then search a parameter (as well as a universal principle) to explain a cross-linguistic difference between English and Korean. Based on the syntax-semantic interface theory, I propose that the semantic property, goal-oriented terminus (or telicity), of subject-oriented resultatives is measured out by the scale of path that the subject has gone through. This implies that the subject argument (as well as the (in)direct object argument) may be defined as aspectually required argument in some group of directed motion verbs, contra ordinary belief (Tenny 1994, Levin & Rappaport 1995, van Hout 2000, Wechsler 2005). And I assume with Huang’s (1989, 2006) Generalized Control Theory and Functional Parameterization Hypothesis to claim that Korean subject-oriented resultatives, unlike English counterparts, include a logical subject, Pro[+pronominal], in their (stative or open-ended adjective) result phrase as complete functional complex, which explains the contrast between English and Korean in their syntactic distribution. Lee, Sechang. 2014. Optionality in Glide Formation: Focusing on Vowel Clash and the Emergence of Unmarked Syllable Structure. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 597-616. This article aims to provide a unified explanation of the systematic dual behavior of glide formation in Korean. I argue that the optionality or obligatoriness of glide formation is driven by the emergence of unmarked syllable structure in the sense of McCarty and Prince(1994). It is assumed that faithfulness constraints on segment dominate relevant syllable structure constraints which in turn dominate another faithfulness constraint on mora. Generally, the segment faithulness is obeyed at the expense of violating syllable structure constraints. But those latter constraints are obeyed in one condition where the segment faithfulness is not at issue. Just in that case, the unmarked syllable structure is emergent. I review the previous treatments in Han(1990) and Lee(1996), overcoming their limitations while preserving their insights. In a nutshell, the central advantage of a solution of dual aspects of glide formation along the lines in this article is that it enables us to maintain a single ranking of constraints, dispensing with any additional stipulations, which is a basic tenet of standard OT. Chung, Kyung-Sook. 2014. The Korean Sentence-Final Suffix –ney and the Assertive Speech Act. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 617-640. This paper shows that the Korean sentence-final suffix –ney should not be treated as an epistemic modal like the English modal must, nor as an evidential or mirative. Instead, the paper argues that, like the declarative suffix –ta, –ney should be a sentence mood that basically expresses an assertive speech act, and that the difference between the two is that –ta is a sentence mood that requires that the described proposition be‘informative to the hearer', whereas -ney is a mood that requires that the proposition be‘informative to the speaker'. Thus the proposed analysis suggests that the assertive speech act can be at least two subtypes, the assertion for informativeness and the assertion for the speaker's own knowledge. Choe, Jinsun. 2014. Acquisition of the Mapping between the Causation Type and the Causative Form in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 641-653. This paper investigates whether the two kinds of causatives in Korean (morphological and syntactic) encode causation to different degrees of directness, and at what age children acquire these properties. A Truth-Value Judgment Task was used to test twenty Korean-speaking adults and thirty-seven Korean-speaking children. The results showed that both adults and children usually accepted the syntactic causative with both direct and indirect causation. As for the morphological causative, however, both adults and children accepted it most of the time with direct causation. Further analysis by verb type showed that children's adult-like behavior was limited to only occur with certain high frequency verbs like mek-ta 'eat' and ip-ta 'wear', suggesting that there are developmental stages children go through in acquiring the adult-like mapping between the causative form and the causative type. Han, Seung-Hoon. 2014. An Integrated Approach to Linguistic Misunderstandings and Miscommunications: From the Perspective of Intentional and Non-intentional Case. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 655-676. The purpose of this study is to reconsider linguistic miscommunications and misunderstandings, which occur in marital conversations and conversations between parent and children in korea, in terms of intentional or non-intentional case. There have been two major problems in accounting for them in many previous studies: one is that two concepts have been randomly used without any criteria; the other most of studies have focused on non-intentional cases involved in mistakes, noise, cross-cultural value and etc. As an alternative for improving them, a special focus is laid on Han’s(2014) integrated framework built by the combination of action theory and pragma-linguistic approach. On the basis of Han’s framework, an attention is paid to analyzing a set of real data involved in family discourse. The results of this analysis are discussed in terms of six types of verbal-actions. Such an attempt will be helpful to understand how intentional language usage is employed in dynamic discourse context as well as anatomize why an agent commits intentional miscommunications in his/ her family context. Hong, Ki-Sun. 2014. Multiple Case Construction in Korean and the Discourse Structure. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 39-3, 677-699. This paper attempts to explain the so-called multiple case construction in Korean from a discourse-theoretic point of view. It suggests that the construction should be explained in terms of how speakers package and arrange the information they intend to convey within a sentence. To elucidate such a communicative motivation, it proposes the Discourse Structure consisting of a Discourse Theme and a Discourse Rheme and shows how the Structure provides a comprehensive account for various kinds of multiple case construction. The fundamental question this paper addresses is wherein lies essential differences between the syntactic-oriented language like English and the discourse-oriented language like Korean from a typological viewpoint. Its answer is that one of the differences lies in the principle determining the basic sentence structure, which the multiple case construction seems to exemplify best. (Seoul National University)
