Park, Myung-Kwan & Choi, Sunjoo. 2015. Not Voice but Case Match Matters in VP Ellipsis and Pseudogapping of English. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-2, 000-000. This paper develops a Case/case-theoretic account for what Merchant (2008) calls voice mismatch in ellipsis constructions of English. Merchant (ibid.) reports that VP ellipsis as an elision of smaller size VP allows voice mismatch, but Pseudogapping and Sluicing as an elision of bigger size vP/TP do not. However, Tanaka (2011) argues against Merchant's dichotomy in voice mismatch between VP ellipsis and Pseudogapping, reporting that voice mismatch in both types of ellipsis is permissible or not while interacting with what Kehler (2000) calls discourse coherence relations between ellipsis and antecedent clauses. Departing from Kehler's (2000) insight, we suggest that vP undergoes ellipsis in a resemblance discourse relation, but VP does so in a cause/effect discourse relation. Given the asymmetry in the size of ellipsis in tandem with discours relations, we argue that since Accusative as well as Nominative Case is checked outside VP, the VP to be elided can meet the identity condition on ellipsis with its antecedent VP as the object element in the former and the subject one in the latter or vice versus have not been Case-checked yet, thus being identical in terms of Case-feature at the point of derivation building a VP. Wee, Hae-Kyung. 2015. An Event Semantics Approach to Sluicing vs. VP Ellipsis. This study proposes an account on contrasting grammaticality of sluicing and VP ellipsis based on davidsonian event semantics by arguing for a fundamental semantic difference between them. It is claimed that the elided event in sluicing is an old event, which is anaphorically referring back to the event denoted by the antecedent event, just like a pronoun, whereas the event of a VP ellipsis introduces a novel event. This can explain why sluicing usually occurs with an indefinite antecedent, whereas VPE cannot. (Dankook University)

Lee, Minkyung. 2015. Resolving Hiatus in Kinyarwanda Morphology. Korean Journal of Linguistics, xx-xx, xx-xx. When two vowels are adjacent across a morpheme boundary, several ways of avoiding vowel hiatus are invoked; vowel gliding whereby either vowel becomes a glide, vowel coalescence where two vowels are fused together to become a third vowel and vowel deletion in which a less sonorous vowel is elided. As in other Bantu languages, in Kinyarwanda spoken in Rwanda and Burundi, vowel clash is resolved by various ways. Of particular interest is vowel coalescence which well conforms to serialism-oriented Optimality Theory(OT). To avoid an onsetless syllable, two steps of root node deletion followed by floating feature sharing are split off under two core principles of local optimality and gradualness. Furthermore, vowel elision is preferred when vowel gliding results in a complex onset, which incurs the OCP violation. In essence, the analysis provided here approves that serial OT can be extended and applied to the vowel phonology of hiatus resolution. (Daegu University)

Yim, Changguk. 2015. A Note on the Structure of Small Clauses: Symmetrical or Asymmetrical? Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-2, xx-xx. This article revisits the question of whether so-called small clauses (SCs) have a symmetrical or asymmetrical structure. To this end, it reviews Moro’s (2000) “dynamic antisymmetry” and Chomsky’s (2013) “labeling algorithm” systems, in which they both capitalize on the assumption of a symmetrical structure for SCs. The article then points out that such a symmetrical SC structure is problematic in their respective argumentation, and this problem is solved by positing asymmetrical structure for SCs such as Bower 1993, in which the subject asymmetrically c-commands the predicate. Ahn, Hee-Don & Cho, Sungeun. 2015. Notes on Ellipsis and Movement Asymmetries. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-2, 00-00, Movement and ellipsis have common features in both conceptual and empirical grounds. Conceptually, both movement and ellipsis share an operation “delete” and contain copies lacking phonological elements under the standard minimalistic treatments. Empirically, certain categories seem to undergo both ellipsis and movement, and may be subject to similar conditions. However, some categories can undergo only movement, but other categories can undergo only ellipsis. This paper aims to show that conditions on movement and ellipsis are not reducible to a single principle, and are subject to independent licensing principles in UG. We propose two overarching licensing conditions on movement and ellipsis; (i) only functional categories can license the ellipsis of their complements, (ii) movable categories should be phases. Given these conditions, our proposal can explain ellipsis and movement asymmetries in English. (Konkuk University & Yeungnam University)
Cho, Tae-Rin. 2015. On the Direction of Public Language Policy in Korea: Focused on Requirements and Guidelines of Public Language. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 40-2, 00-00. The purpose of this paper is to find a reasonable direction of public language policy in Korea by analyzing the current situation and demands. First of all, this paper defines public language as “language text produced by public institutions for a public purpose targeting members of a society (ordinary citizens)”. And then, requirements of public language, specially 'correctness' and 'communicacy(intelligibility)' are identified through the review of precedent studies. Requirements of public language can find their meaning when they are materialized into actual guidelines of public language. For that reason, guidelines of public language at home and abroad are examined, and a category of 'regard for audience' is worthy of notice. Finally, this paper proposes the following requirements of public language based on the discussions so far. Category Subcategory Regard for audience/reader Identification Focusing Addressing Communicacy Publicness Ease of understanding Appropriacy of expression Information transmissibility Visual convenience Realistic practicability These requirements can be used as the basis to establish direction of public language policy in Korea.
