Kim, Jong-Bok. 2011. English Comparative Correlative Construction: Interactions between Lexicon and Constructions. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 307-336. The grammatical properties of the English comparative correlative construction have challenged both movement and non-movement approaches. In this paper, based on our corpus search, we claim that the distinctive properties of the construction as well as its sharing properties with other constructions can be better represented in terms of syntactic gradience couched upon the perspective of construction grammar. The construction is gradient in the sense that it lives a double life: it has both subordination and coordination properties. Developing the spirit of construction grammar set forth by Abeillé and Borsley (2008), the analysis shows the need to place more emphasis on the interaction between lexical properties and core constructions. Nam, Hosung. 2011. Phonology of Positional Asymmetry and Geminates: Constraints from Gestural Coordination Dynamics. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 337-365. The asymmetries between prevocalic and postvocalic positions that this study focuses on are twofold: (1) languages are attested that disallow codas (e.g. Fijian), only allows released (e.g. Arabic, Hindi, and Russian) or unreleased codas (e.g. Korean), or allow optionally released coda (e.g. English) in the postvocalic position whereas no languages are known as onsetless and prevocalic stops are always released; (2) postvocalic consonants are likely to be a target of various phonological processes (deletion, assimilation, and epenthesis). Nevertheless, unlike unreleased stops, it has been documented that released stops are rarely targeted for such processes in a pre-consonantal context. We attempt to unify such a postvocalic syllable typology and the positional asymmetries by positing gestural dynamic marked constraints, SYN and SEQ replacing ONSET and NOCODA. This study shows how constraints based on independently motivated dynamic gestural principles can be employed to account for cross-linguistic postvocalic patterns (released, unreleased and codaless) and some asymmetrical behaviors (between onset and coda) by proposing a split consonant gesture and a postvocalic coordinative structure distinct from the prevocalic one. Park, Jong Un. 2011. On Controlled Subjects in Jussive Complements in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 367-393. This paper aims to examine the nature of null subjects as well as the range of overt subjects available in the so-called jussive complements in Korean. Specifically, this paper addresses the following two questions: (i) What is the categorial status of controlled subjects in jussive complements?; and (ii) Why can overt subjects be allowed in place of null subjects in jussive complements? I argue that the controlled null subject is pro, which can alternate with a lexical subject, and also suggest that the jussive complements can be defined as subjunctive clauses, which allow for the presence of overt subjects across languages. Furthermore, this paper provides a formal analysis of how the null and overt subjects in the jussive complements are referentially connected to the matrix argument(s). (Georgetown University)

Son, Minjung. 2011. The Projection of Syllable Structure: A Case Study of Intervocalic /k/ in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 395-414. In this study, we examine if underlying syllable structure is projected in an articulatory manner at the phonetic execution level while taking into account the intervocalic voicing rule in Korean. Confining the scope of the study to the accentual phrase-medial condition, we find that syllable positional effects (onset vs. coda) were present, with more reduction in the intervocalic coda. The results show that various phonetic manifestations of prosodic structure are subject to being obvious to the speaker/listener even within a smaller prosodic domain. In the accentual phrase-medial condition, spatio-temporal gestural specifications in the input were still projected distinctively. Based on the results, three phonological phenomena pertinent to coda reduction were further discussed. Firstly, coda reduction was compatible with syllable-dependent intergestural coordination of a consonant with respect to a vowel (synchronous coordination for onset and sequential coordination for coda). Secondly, coda reduction at the production level did not continue to be projected to the perception level, not providing a concrete evidence of an established relationship between coda reduction and perceptual resyllabification. Lastly, the prevalence of regressive directionality observed in place assimilation can also find its basis in coda reduction (/C1C2/→ [C2C2]). (Hanyang University)

Shin, Seung-Hoon. 2011. Perception and Production of Illicit Lateral Sequences by Korean Learners of English. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 415-437. Speech production has been thought to be the product of speech perception and thus reflects what listeners perceive. Given the patterns of production and perception of illicit consonant sequences involving the lateral by Korean learners of English, this paper investigates adaptation of English illicit sequences on a perceptual and productional basis, and explores the relationship between speech perception and production. The results of two experiments show a clear discrepancy between Korean learners' perception and production of the sequences. Given the results, this paper maintains that speech production might not mirror speech perception while it does mirror the phonology of the native language, which is against the traditional theories but is partly congruent with recent studies. This finding suggests that production is very loosely related to perception in the case of a cluster acquisition, and that acquisition of foreign illicit sequences are different from acquisition of a foreign segment. It also contends that native phonological constraints including phonotactics play a more important role in speech production than in speech perception. (Yeungnam University)

An, Duk-Ho. 2011. A Note on Wilder's (2008) Multiple Dominance Analysis of the Right Node Raising Construction. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 439-455. The Right Node Raising construction has received much attention in the recent literature. In particular, much of the debate revolved around the issues of linearization and derivation of the construction in question, for which several proposals have been made. In this paper, I am mainly concerned with evaluating a particular theory of linearization and derivation of the Right Node Raising construction proposed by Wilder (2008), which is characterized by its adoption of a modified LCA system for linearization and the multiple dominance system for derivation of the Right Node Raising construction. I show that although Wilder's ingenious theory has nice consequences, it also faces several problems and thus cannot be maintained without further elaboration. (Konkuk University)

Ahn, Hee-Don & Cho, Sungeun. 2011. Notes on Apparent DP Ellipsis: A Reply to Lee & Kim (2010). Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 457-471. Ahn & Cho (2009, 2010) suggest that ellipsis is licensed by functional heads such as C, T, and D which can bear an [E] feature. In the same reasoning, they suggest that a lexical category like V or semi-lexical category v which gives a theta role cannot have an [E] feature. Under the analysis, it is predicted that when DP is directly selected by the lexical category V, which cannot bear an [E] feature, DP ellipsis isn't allowed. However, there is an example which apparently shows that DP ellipsis seems to be allowed. Ahn & Cho (2009, 2010) argue that the missing constituent is in fact a pro, but not derived from DP ellipsis which is theoretically impossible. Recently, Lee & Kim (2010) claim that Korean has both pro and DP ellipsis. This paper aims to explore the examples that seem to be DP ellipsis and argue that it indeed involves pro. Multiple Opacity in Wintu Mid-Vowels

Lee, Minkyung. 2011. Multiple Opacity in Wintu Mid-Vowels. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 473-489. OT-CC with Prec, a serial version of OT, is successful in dealing with multiple opacity phenomenon observed in Wintu where mid-vowel raising is underapplied and overapplied as well. In Winu, a mid vowel in a stem tends to be raised before a low vowel and with a single consonant intervened while it is dull in raising when a consonant cluster is placed. Here, the raising rule counterfeeds a rule of consonant cluster simplification. However, in Wintu, not all mid vowels undergo raising though they occur in the same environment, i.e., with a single consonant before a low vowel. Here, the prior application of raising counterbleeds absolute neutralization. Under the regime of OT-CC, multiple Prec is responsible for multiple opacity in Winu, each of which repairs a different type of opacity. (Daegu University)

Tak, Jin-young. 2011. Word-edge Consonant Clusters in Chaha: The Syllable Margin Approach. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 491-514. The present study analyzes various patterns of [ɨ]-epenthesis toward word-initial and -final consonant clusters in Chaha within the framework of the syllable margin approach (Baertsch 2002, Baertsch & Davis 2003). Following Banksira (1997, 2000) and Rose (1997, 2000), this paper posits that /β/ is a sonorant in Chaha. However, in contrast to Banksira (2000) who assigns the same sonority value to /β/ as nasals and liquids and Rose (2000) who locates /β/ between nasals and liquids in the sonority scale, it is argued here that in fact in Chaha /β/ is less sonorant than both nasals and liquids. Furthermore, compared to Rose's (2003) analysis where the constraint SyllabeContact places a crucial role in determining [ɨ]-epenthesis in Chaha, the present analysis splits consonants within the syllable into two types of margin consonants (M1 and M2). Then, it is proposed that the separate M1 and M2 hierarchies enable us to account for the different behaviors of consonant clusters with respect to [ɨ]-epenthesis without referring to an external sonority scale or a specific syllable contact conditions (Murray & Tennemann 1983). Ha, Seungwan. 2011. A/A'-Movement of the Goal Object in English Double Object Constructions. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 515-534. This paper is concerned with asymmetric movement of the goal object in double object constructions. In English, the goal object may be passivized, but it cannot undergo A'-movement. To account for the unavailability of A'-movement, we adopt Czeplunch (1982) and Kayne (1984b), in that the goal object NP is assumed to be embedded within an empty-headed PP. We have entertained two possibilities; 1) The empty-headed PP is assumed to undergo A'-movement, but we argue that this movement is illicit, appealing to Landau (2007) that prohibits the empty-headed phrase movement. 2) Only the goal NP undergoes A'-movement stranding the preposition, but it would violate the subject island. On the other hand, passivization follows the locality condition (Rizzi 1990, Chomsky 1995). As McGinnis (1998, 2001) proposes, v bears the EPP feature that probes an NP. The goal object NP is closer to the feature than the theme object NP in double object constructions. Therefore, only the goal NP A-moves to SpecTP in passivization. (Kyungpook National University)

Han, Eunjoo. 2011. A Stratal-OT Approach to the Overapplication of Coda Neutralization and Consonant Cluster Simplification in Korean. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 535-557. This paper presents a Stratal-OT approach to the overapplication of Coda Neutralization and Consonant Cluster Simplification across compound boundaries in Korean. It is proposed that the problems involved with the overapplication be resolved by recognizing two serial but separate levels in Korean phonology. The dominance of Align(Stem, σ) over Onset plays a crucial role in the overall discussion and this ranking holds at both levels. The overapplication effect arises from the difference in the access to morphological structure between the two levels. (Seoul Women's University)

Vlack, Stephen van. 2011. English in the South Korean Linguistic Landscape: Varied Patterns of Use and Status. Korean Journal of Linguistics, 36-2, 559-583. This research seeks to provide an overview of the South Korean linguistic landscape by analyzing language use in signs for business establishments in urban public spaces. A total of 1205 signs in six high-volume areas of metropolitan Seoul were documented and analyzed, specifically for their use of language. They were divided into different major categories depending on the languages present and how many. The findings suggest that English holds a special symbolic role in the linguistic landscape and is also being appropriated as a means of serving some communicative functions. English and Roman scripts are used in signs to symbolize positive affective notions (e.g., globalization, modernity, Westernization…etc.) related with the language and culture as to effectively appeal to the local community. Moreover, in contrast to South Korea’s monolingual status, English and Roman scripts are generally used more to assist the linguistic communication of Koreans, rather than to merely be resourceful to the international community. It can be argued that English has a salient status in the Korean linguistic landscape and its usage is based on the societal norms of a modern bilingual South Korea. (Sookmyung Women's Univeristy)
