This study examines the translation of short-form subtitles, a recent video format that has gained widespread popularity worldwide. Short-form videos are constrained to a vertical format with a minimum duration of 15 seconds and a maximum duration of 10 minutes, and they are prevalent on social networking platforms such as YouTube and Instagram. In this context, our primary focus is on YouTube Shorts. YouTube Shorts are characterized by their brevity, necessitating the efficient conveyance of information within a limited timeframe. To examine the characteristics of subtitle translation in YouTube Shorts, videos with over 10,000 “likes” were selected and analyzed among those featuring English subtitles. Consequently, the characteristics of subtitle translation in YouTube Shorts can be classified into three broad categories. Firstly, additional content is incorporated into English subtitles to aid international viewers' comprehension. Secondly, lengthy or extraneous material is omitted entirely from English subtitles. Thirdly, subtitles serve as a vehicle for introducing new humor elements, replacing cultural references that may not be universally understood by international audiences with more relatable concepts.

This article introduces a sociology of translation informed by the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu. Founded on a theory of practice, the sociology of translation may be defined as a theory of translation practice. Bourdieu’s sociology thus allows for an integration of translation practice into his heuristic model of society and social practice. This article discusses also Bourdieu’s key concepts – habitus, field, capital, illusio – and analyses briefly the first korean translation of Le deuxieme sexe by Simone de Beauvoir in order to explore how Bourdieu’s concepts may be made to work empirically within translation research.

Today human-machine collaboration for a translation is urgently needed. Due to the ease and convenience of using machine translation, its use has become routine for the general public, and as a result, translation is no longer recognized as a specialized field for the professional translators. In addition to translation, learners in all fields are increasingly using convenient and free online translators to translate, read, and write. However, despite being fully aware of the situation, educators in all fields have been mostly negative and passive in their responses. Therefore, it is clear that machine translation has become a taboo topic in today’s university classrooms, especially in graduate schools of translation and interpreting, and are marginalized from formal discussions. In this context, the machine translation literacy instruction needs to be introduced into translation education for a sustainable translation profession in the age of AI. And future education of machine translation literacy should cultivate professional translators who are both informed and critical about various machine translation technologies and machine translation consultants who can utilize their expertise in the use of machine translation to help citizens and clients use machine translation wisely and responsibly.

With YouTube rapidly emerging as a significant media platform, foreign viewers can easily access Korean entertainment programs. Despite the growing importance of translating entertainment show subtitles on YouTube, there are gaps in research on this subject. This study aimed at categorizing subtitles used in Korean entertainment shows based on their functional features drawing upon related studies on subtitles and analyzing the differences in the translation strategies. Domestic broadcasters are providing translated videos of entertainment programs through their official YouTube channels. Among the entertainment broadcasting videos uploaded to the official YouTube channels of broadcasters such as KBS, SBS, and tvN, videos with English subtitles of less than 15 minutes were used for analysis. Subtitle types were classified into three: basic information delivery, producer’s opinion presentation, and performer’s utterance. Translated subtitles were performing their original functions in terms of delivering content. However, they still have limitations. Above all, there were cases where information was omitted due to spatial constraints. Also, since it was not possible to fit all subtitles on one screen shot, it was presented in two shots to speed up the conversion of subtitles in some cases. These eventually hinder the viewer's understanding of the content, so more efficient translation strategies need to be developed.

The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of using NMT in the translation of children’s literature and to discuss its implications. To this end, the study compared the human and machine translation results of the children’s literature work Anne of Green Gables to see if using NMT would have high translation productivity and accuracy because children’s literature, especially, had concise sentences and uncomplicated grammatical structure. In the part composed of some short sentences, machine translation was generally effective, but the results showed that there were parts that had to be refined through post-editing in order to further bring out the characteristics of children's literature. The findings fall short of presenting generalized patterns due to small data and limited analysis tools. Future research could look into more works and diversify genres and contribute to establishing more differentiated post-editing guidelines.

This study examines Korean translations of intertextual references in Overwatch character dialogues. It explores a wide range of references encompassing film, drama, songs, proverbs, sayings, and quotes, with a particular emphasis on elements of popular culture. Various translation strategies are identified, including cultural substitution, literal translation, elaboration and explicitation. The translators' careful attention to cultural nuances is evident in their choice of strategies. Translation sometimes loses the socio-cultural context of references, potentially diluting the original content's depth. However, the priority is to maintain meaning while considering universal intertextuality. These translations may not fully capture the original cultural richness but don't significantly hinder the gaming experience. Instead, they offer players from diverse backgrounds a basic understanding and empathy. This analysis of Overwatch's intertextual reference translations highlights the importance of understanding and conveying cultural context in game translations. While not replicating all cultural intricacies, translated texts contribute to game immersion and character distinctiveness, fostering player connection. Translators play a crucial role in enhancing game diversity and global accessibility.

This study explores the basic concepts and research trends of PEMT (pre-editing and machine translation), and its application in related industries. Although academic and practical attention has been focused on MTPE (machine translation and post-editing), PEMT is also worth exploring as it aims to improve the quality of source text (ST) which can in turn affect that of target text (TT). PEMT simplifies the original text and clarifies unclear representations, making it easier for computers to understand. Most previous studies so far have revealed the quality and effective use of PEMT, supporting its significant impact on the quality and efficiency of machine translation. In translation practice, PEMT is widely used and mainly takes three forms: entrancement of ST expression, grammar, and terminology; production of ST in controlled languages; and technical writing that can improve of the quality of TT by making ST machine-translatable. Given the importance of PEMT, further in-depth research and practical efforts based on developments to date are required to ultimately improve the quality of machine translation.

With the start of Google NMT Translation in 2016, since Papago officially launched its service in July 2017, there has been much discussion about the applicable areas of NMT translation and its limitations. In addition, despite the rapid popularization of NMT translation, it is common to consider that it is still premature to apply NMT translation to literary translation, but it is essential to assess the possibility of NMT translation and discuss future orientation. Therefore, in this study, human and NMT translations of novel and video caption texts were compared and analyzed following the studies on essay translation and play translation. A total of four cases were analyzed in using the texts translated by experts and four students as human translation and the texts translated by Papago as NMT translation. The presented opinions of the students by comparing their translations, expert translations, and NMT translations, respectively were integrated and analyzed.

As cultural exchange between China and Korea continues to grow, Chinese food culture is becoming more popular in Korea. Academic research on Chinese food culture is also increasing. However, the existing analyses of the Korean translation strategy for adopting Chinese food names are mostly based on data from published books, and there are few studies or documentaries that explain this strategy. There are two research questions included in this paper: 1) What is the Korean translation strategy for Chinese food names in documentaries? 2) Is there any difference in the translation strategies used in documentaries and books? In order to analyze the translation strategies used in documentaries to translate Chinese food names, "Once Upon a Bite 2" was selected as the main data, and two other documentaries and three books were selected as secondary data to answer these questions. The conclusion of this study is summarized as follows: documentaries tend to adopt foreignization translation strategies when translating Chinese food names into Korean, while books tend to adopt domestication translation strategies.

Today, the concept of translation continues to create confusion and controversy in the translation field and academia, and the identity and job stability of translators are greatly threatened due to the development and spread of machine translation. As an attempt to find ways to overcome these challenges, this study introduces four translation concepts that have recently emerged, namely augmented translation, transcreation, slow translation, and biotranslation, and examines their implications. Based on this, this study explores the sustainable conditions for translation and Translation Studies in the era of ‘post-translation’ and forecasts how translation education can prepare for them.
