This study examines the translation of short-form subtitles, a recent video format that has gained widespread popularity worldwide. Short-form videos are constrained to a vertical format with a minimum duration of 15 seconds and a maximum duration of 10 minutes, and they are prevalent on social networking platforms such as YouTube and Instagram. In this context, our primary focus is on YouTube Shorts. YouTube Shorts are characterized by their brevity, necessitating the efficient conveyance of information within a limited timeframe. To examine the characteristics of subtitle translation in YouTube Shorts, videos with over 10,000 “likes” were selected and analyzed among those featuring English subtitles. Consequently, the characteristics of subtitle translation in YouTube Shorts can be classified into three broad categories. Firstly, additional content is incorporated into English subtitles to aid international viewers' comprehension. Secondly, lengthy or extraneous material is omitted entirely from English subtitles. Thirdly, subtitles serve as a vehicle for introducing new humor elements, replacing cultural references that may not be universally understood by international audiences with more relatable concepts.

This study examines Korean translations of intertextual references in Overwatch character dialogues. It explores a wide range of references encompassing film, drama, songs, proverbs, sayings, and quotes, with a particular emphasis on elements of popular culture. Various translation strategies are identified, including cultural substitution, literal translation, elaboration and explicitation. The translators' careful attention to cultural nuances is evident in their choice of strategies. Translation sometimes loses the socio-cultural context of references, potentially diluting the original content's depth. However, the priority is to maintain meaning while considering universal intertextuality. These translations may not fully capture the original cultural richness but don't significantly hinder the gaming experience. Instead, they offer players from diverse backgrounds a basic understanding and empathy. This analysis of Overwatch's intertextual reference translations highlights the importance of understanding and conveying cultural context in game translations. While not replicating all cultural intricacies, translated texts contribute to game immersion and character distinctiveness, fostering player connection. Translators play a crucial role in enhancing game diversity and global accessibility.

Today, the concept of translation continues to create confusion and controversy in the translation field and academia, and the identity and job stability of translators are greatly threatened due to the development and spread of machine translation. As an attempt to find ways to overcome these challenges, this study introduces four translation concepts that have recently emerged, namely augmented translation, transcreation, slow translation, and biotranslation, and examines their implications. Based on this, this study explores the sustainable conditions for translation and Translation Studies in the era of ‘post-translation’ and forecasts how translation education can prepare for them.

The purpose of this study is to search and analyze queer-related terms, focusing on media companies with different ideologies. To this end, this paper selected queer-related terms in English articles provided by the progressive Hankyoreh Shinmun, Kyunghyang Shinmun, the conservative Chosun Daily, Dong-A Ilbo, and collected related articles based on headlines and contents, paying attention to changes according to the ideology of the media. As a result, the progressive Hankyoreh Shinmun provided various domestic news related to queer, and the Kyunghyang Shinmun showed news that reflected various domestic and international news, although the number of articles was not large. On the other hand, the conservative Chosun Daily showed significantly different results depending on the search terms. The Dong-A Ilbo showed that queer-related articles covered significantly fewer articles than other media companies, and the field was not diverse.

Multimodality and translation are inextricably linked to communication and meaning-making. Therefore, this study provides an overview of multimodal transcription and audio description in the field of translation studies. More specifically, it discusses the creation of multimodal transcription, which proves to be useful in the translation of multimodality, inspiring subtitling and dubbing strategies. Audio description as a form of semiotic translation of multimodal texts is also discussed, whereby some non-English language films are used as case studies. It argues that research in multimodal transcription, audio description, and translation will continue apace, assisted by ever more sophisticated technological advances, and the future will provide us with ever more insights into how multimodal texts make meaning and how that meaning can be conveyed in another language.
