Hydrogel Contact Lens Materials with Improved UV Blocking Effect

HEMA, AA, MMA, and EGDMA as crosslinking agent and AIBN as an initiator, and 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone, 2-ethylhexyl-trans-4-methoxy-cinnamate, 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)benzophenone as additives at 0.1-1.0% ratios were used to manufacture hydrophilic ophthalmic lenses through thermal polymerization before their physical properties were measured. The results showed that the samples containing of 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone and 2-ethylhexyl-trans- 4-methoxy-cinnamate resulted in a decrease of the UV blocking performance after high-pressure sterilization whereas the sample containing 2-hydroxy-4-(methacryloyloxy)benzophenone showed no change in the UV blocking performance. It is judged that this is induced by presence or absence of an acyl functional group in benzophenone.

KiSS1-derived peptide receptor, a GPCR protein, binds with the hormone Kisspeptin plays a major role in the neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction. It is important in the onset of puberty and triggers the release of gonadotrophinreleasing hormone. It is a potential drug target for the disorders related to GnRH, hence, analysing the structural features of the receptor becomes important. The three dimensional of the receptor modelled in a previous study was utilised. In this study, we have analysed the protein – protein interaction of the receptor with Kisspeptin 10 and 15. The study revealed the important residues which are involved in the interaction. The result of this study could be helpful in understanding the mechanism of Kiss1 receptor activation and the pathophysiology of the disorders related to the receptor.
Characterization of Nickel Oxide Nanofibers Obtained by Electrospinning

Nickel oxide nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning with nickel(II) acetate tetrahydrate and polyvinylpyrrolidone and calcination process. The nanofiber shape was easily detected from the nanofibers with high Ni contents after calcined at 600oC and the crystal structure of layer-by-layer growth was observed from SEM images at 900oC. XRD and TEM results showed metallic Ni and NiO structure were formed at nanofibers obtained at 600 and 900oC and the crystallite size was calculated from 25 to 55 nm. The surface of nanofibers was fully oxidized from the deconvoluted Cu 2p and O 1s XPS spectra.
Docking Study of Corticotropin-Releasing Factor-1 Receptor with Its Antagonists

CRFR is involved in the pathophysiology of various disorders including depression, stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction. The discovery of novel and structurally diverse CRF1 receptor inhibitors becomes essential. In this study, we have performed molecular docking of CRF1R with the derivatives of 8-substituted-2-aryl-5- alkylaminoquinolines as CRF1R inhibitors. The antagonist molecules were optimized and docked into the binding site of the receptor. On analysing the docked complexes we have identified that the residues HIS214, THR215, ARG227, ARG1008, LYS1060 and ASP1061 are important in forming hydrogen bond with the inhibitors. Further studies on these residues could reveal important structural features required for the formation of CRF1R-inhibitor complex and thus in the discovery of novel and potent inhibitors.

Protein phosphatase manganese dependent 1D (PPM1D), a Ser/Thr protein phosphatise, play major role in the cancer tumorigenesis of various tumors including neuroblastoma, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, medulloblastoma, breast cancer, prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. Hence, analysis on the structural features required for the formation of PPM1Dinhibitor complex becomes essential. In this study, we have performed molecular docking of SL-175 and -176 and proteinprotein docking of CDC5L with PPM1D. On analysing the docked complexes, we have identified the important residues involved in the formation of protein-ligand complex. Research concentrating on these residues could be helpful in understanding the pathophysiology of various tumors related to PPM1D.
Meteorological Field Generation Method for CALPUFF Model

CALPUFF is one of the recommended air pollution models by EPA with AERMOD. It has been used to simulate the ambient concentration of critical air pollutants as well as non-critical pollutants such as persistent organic matters and the organic materials causing odor. In this model, the air pollutants go through dispersion, transportation, chemical reaction, and deposition process. These mechanisms are significantly influenced by meteorological condition. This study produces the meteorological field in three different methods for the simulation of SO2 using CALPUFF: 1) CALMET model by using both ground-level and aerological observation, 2) CALMET model by using MM5 results with NCEP/NCAR reanalyzed data, 3) CALMET model by using MM5 results in which FDDA is applied with NCEP/NCAR reanalyzed data as well as the meteorological data of Korea Meteorological Administration. As a result of CALPUFF model, the resolved concentration of SO2 showed different behaviors in three cases. For the first case, the fluctuation of SO2 concentration was frequently observed while the fluctuation is reduced in the second and third cases. In addition, the maximum concentration of SO2 in the first case was about 2~3 times higher than the second case, and about 4~6 times higher than the third case. These results can be caused by the accuracy of the resolved meteorological field. It is inferred that the meteorological field of the first case could be less accurate than other two cases. These results show that the use of correct meteorological data can improve the result of dispersion model. Moreover, the contribution of various sources such as point, line, and area sources on the ambient concentration of air pollutant can be roughly estimated from the sensitivity analysis.

Poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-based hydrogels were surface-functionalized with spiropyran (SP) derivatives to obtain photochromic contact lenses. The contact lens reversibly changes from colorless to purple as response to UV light since colorless ring-closed SP state converts to purple ring-opened merocyanine (MC) state under UV light irradiation. The purple contact lens emits red light at 640 nm. Importantly, the presence of SP segments did not significantly affect the equilibrium water content (EWC) of the lens. SP-functionalized hydrogel lenses may find potential applications in developing light-adaptive ophthalmic materials.
Development of Context-Aware Power Management Scheme Using Beacons

In this paper, we propose a context-aware power management (CPM) scheme using beacons to reduce the power consumption of personal computers (PCs). In the proposed CPM scheme, the PC, smartphone, control server, and Internet of Things (IoT) device are necessary. PC users first log in the control server using their smartphones and select PCs to turn on. Then, the selected PCs automatically go into three different modes, i.e., sleep, shutdown, and standby power off modes, in order when the PC users leave the PCs without turning off them. Further, we develop a testbed with the proposed CPM scheme using the Arduino with Bluetooth low energy (BLE) and relay modules. Finally, it is shown that the proposed CPM scheme outperforms the conventional scheme in terms of the power consumption.

Since the statistical significance levels of each F value (2.90 and 3.55) for positive expressiveness (PE) and negative expressiveness (NE) are all p<.01, it is found that there is a significant difference of PE and NE by science score. But, since the significant value of F value (1.725) for impulse strength (IS) is .095 (p>.05), it can be seen that there is no significant difference in IS by science score. The higher the science score, the larger the PE values and the lower the NE values. However, even if the science score increases, the IS values do not show a trend in a certain direction.
