The year 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II. Korea, China, and Japan remember the war through distinct linguistic and com- memorative frameworks—a divergence clearly reflected in the naming of Japan’ s surrender day as“Liberation Day,” “Victory Day,” and “End-of-War Memorial Day,” respectively. While Korea and China construct their memories around lib- eration from colonial rule and victory in the war, Japan adopts the neutral term “end of the war,” thereby backgrounding its responsibility and obscuring mem- ories of perpetration. Within this politics of memory, Japanese society has rein- forced its self-image as a“victim” of the war, while memories of Japan as a“ per- petrator” have largely remained in the realm of silence and oblivion. This study examines the Association of Returnees from China(Chūkiren) and its successor activities, which have served as rare exceptions within this memory structure by consistently testifying to and transmitting“perpetrator memories.” Formed in 1957 by Japanese nationals who underwent war crimes trials in China before repa- triation, Chūkiren confronted Japan’s official war memory by engaging in self- reflection and acts of apology for their wartime wrongdoing. Through an analy- sis of Chūkiren’s testimonies and the activities of the Chūkiren Peace Memorial Museum, which carries on their legacy, this article explores the ethical and po- litical challenges involved in transmitting perpetrator memory. Even though de- scendants of perpetrators or ordinary citizens did not directly commit acts of vio- lence, their position within the inherited structures of wrongdoing renders them morally implicated; recognizing such implication constitutes the starting point of ethical practice. The testimony work carried out by Chūkiren and succeeding gen- erations can thus be understood as an “ethical transmission of perpetrator mem- ory ” grounded in this awareness. Furthermore, this study critically examines how China’s lenient postwar policy toward Japanese war criminals has failed to trans- late into a shared memory of reconciliation and has instead been reframed within contemporary“history wars” that foreground Japan’s responsibility. It argues that Japan’s backgrounding of perpetrator responsibility and China’s victim-centered memory have, in effect, reinforced each other, solidifying East Asia’s peace dis- course into a structure of moral antagonism. By analyzing Chūkiren’s activities, this article reveals the limits of East Asian pacifism, which lacks a substantive memory of“reconciliation and responsibility,” and seeks to explore new pathways for an ethical transmission of memory beyond this impasse.

Choe Nam-seon authored two travelogues on Geumgangsan (Mount Geumgang): 『PungakGiyu』 and 『GeumgangYechan』. A three-year gap separates the two works, during which Choe suspended his journey at the entrance to Geumgangsan. This pause reflects his intellectual development of the "Bulham Cultural Theory," through which he sought to construct Geumgangsan as a site of Korea’s collective memory. Previous scholarship has interpreted these writings as expressions of nationalist resistance to Japanese colonial appropriation of Korea’s landscapes. However, such analyses often lack attention to the process by which national resistance was narratively formed. Drawing on Jeffrey Olick’s theory of collective memory, this paper reveals how Choe’s project goes beyond nationalist pride or aesthetic praise; it entails a philological and ethnographic inquiry into a mythical prehistory. Geumgangsan is reimagined as a sacred pilgrimage site in ancient Korean shamanism, the spiritual center of state-protective Buddhism in the Goryeo dynasty, and a locus of Taoist transcendence in the late Joseon period. Through these narrative strategies, Choe constructs Geumgangsan as a politically re-narrativized site of counter-memory, central to the national identity under colonial subjugation.

This paper studies the aspects of postmemory reflected in the animated films of the film director Kim Jungi, <Her Story> and <For Herr>, which suggests a new framework of memory and reproduction about the Japanese Military “Comfort Women,” a postcolonial issue that the world is currently paying attention. For this, this study analyzes the colonial women’s selfnarratives about historical memory and oblivion, and the strategies of historical reproduction through memory, and also reveals its politics of memory. The process in which memories lost and damaged by the historical wounds are delivered and rememorized through popular media such as animated films creates the effect of presenting the past and revealing the politics of collective memory by reflecting the present into the past. The narratives of the colonial experiences and sufferings that testify through the voice of the actual interviewee shared memories of the past, present and future, and act as catalysts to achieve postcolonialism by breaking the boundaries. This is not only to illuminate the tragic life of the victims of the Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, but also gives meaning to the politics of memory by letting audiences gain an insight into history and meet history with a dispassionate view. Furthermore, history is restored again by arousing reality as it reaches the points of memory that official history has not mentioned, and by embracing the world beyond reality.

This study tried to reveal the politics and the changes of the collective memory of US military camp town, especially Itaewon area, which is Seoul's only camp town. To this end, this paper analyzed a documentary film, "Itaewon," produced by Kangyu Garam in 2016. Combined with the nationalistic advocacy of the 'our' land, the memory of Itaewon has expelled the stigmatized women as being occupied by foreign powers. In this context, the choice of work in the camp town, the migration to the US, and the international marriage of those women can read as attempts to escape and resist Korean patriarchy. However, in the 2000s, the redevelopment ("New Town") boom began in Itaewon, and the various forces that created this boom commercialized the nationalist ideology, reproducing the existing nationalistic boundary of 'us.' The purpose of this study is to show that the framework of nationalism, which created a collective memory of Itaewon area by forgetting the women, is being transformed and renewed combining with other values over time.

This study conducted a comparative analysis of the archival value of three UNESCO Memory of the World Register entries—the Nanjing Massacre Archives (2015), the Jürgen Strube Report (2017), and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum Archives (2009)—based on their composition and characteristics. While these records share the commonality of documenting the worst human rights atrocities —the Sino-Japanese War, the Holocaust, and the Cambodian Genocide—they also exhibit distinctiveness in their composition: victim testimonies, perpetrator official records, and perpetrator systematic documentation systems, respectively. This study analyzed the characteristics of these three records and critically examined the politicization issues arising from the revision of the inscription procedures after 2017. This paper compares and analyzes the three records corresponding to ‘Dark Heritage’ based on archival value assessment theory and aims to recall the contemporary significance of ‘Dark Heritage’ records.

This paper analyses textbook and teaching material of post-war Japan taking inspiration from the need to examine how education for children provided platform to reconstruct a “Memory” in post-war period. The main focus is laid on Japanese language textbook “Chuto-kokugo” (Ministry of Education, 1947) and one of its chapters “Shounen-no-hi-no-omoide” (Jugendgedenken, Hermann Hesse, translated by Kenji Takahashi). The “Chuto-kokugo” was the first government-designated textbook after the war, prepared in line with policy of GHQ and the Ministry of Education, which required revision of textbook. In other words, “Chuto-kokugo” was an apparatus developed together by GHQ and Ministry of Education, to disseminate crucial national policy of education reform. Needless to say, objective behind this preparation of textbook was linked to intention of reconstructing “National Memory”. In this sense, it can be said that “Chuto-kokugo” was expected to create a new “National Memory” for the children of postwar Japan, and “Shounen-no-hi-no-omoide” was purposefully included to meet that expectation. “Shounen-no-hi-no-omoide” is a story where protagonist thinks of his mistakes of youth as traumatic and starts telling those traumatic experiences when he became adult. It should be noted that there is a hidden deceptive mechanism, which uses experience of moral reflection for transforming long sealed and never expressed “Traumatic Memory” of “Guilt” and “Self Denial” into positive “Memory of Self-Affirmation”. As a result, this paper reveals that the textbook “Chuto-kokugo” and its chapter “Shounen-no-hi-no-omoide”carried the function making children of the time believe that “Memory” of crime particularly “Memory” of war and “Memory” of colonial rule can be altered by reciting words of “Human Culture and World Peace”.

This study explores how Aboriginal narratives and the politics of memory in Sally Morgan’s My Place and Kate Grenville’s the Secret River dissolve ‘terra nullius’ ideology and the Australian pioneer myth. If My Place may ask the question ‘Who owns the past,’ The Secret River would probably answer ‘the white man must bear the responsibility for Australia’s colonization.’ Morgan writes an autobiographical novel as a descendant of the Stolen Generation who were taken away from their families forcibly and exploited economically and sexually. The narrator Sally is desperately in search of the family’s secret, which is related with a white station owner’s incestuous rape in the frontier age and the crucial violences of colonization. Her journey to ‘what it means to be an Aboriginal’ has become a rewriting of Aboriginal memories and white Australian history. The Secret River seemingly deals with the story of how a convict-settler William Thornhill took up a plot of land and settled down as a gentry-like settler, but it also unsettles the legitimacy of the pioneer myth that has played a powerful role in Australian history. Grenville deploys her own history of the ancestor, Solomon Wiseman, and the novel is deliberately organized from the perspective of Thornhill. Therefore, the author makes readers pay attention to the settler’s guilt and the denial of apology.

This study aims to examine the characteristics of an individual’s memory on the basis of a corpus linguistic technique with James Joyce’s Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and Ulysses. One’s memory is constructed through his or her personal experience; however, the construction of memory may also be influenced by the social framework. In ‘Eveline’ in Dubliners, Eveline’s memory of her dying mother was connected with her difficulties by patriarchal ideology. In ‘Ivy Day in the Committee Room’ in Dubliners, Joe Hynes and others remembered Charles Stewart Parnell as an Irish independence fighter; thus, their memory of him indicated that they were supporting Irish independence. In A portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, young Stephen Dedalus was forced to remember what the adults wanted at the first Christmas dinner. The adults tried to implant their own memories into him. In Ulysses, Stephen Dedalus, Buck Mulligan, Haines had different memories of the same event, and it may depend on the situations where they were at the moment. Thus, it can be said that what the main characters from Joyce’s texts remembered is closely related to the contemporary political, religious, social situations surrounding them.

This article deals with the politics and poetics of memory. It is fair to argue that for recent decades, memory-related scholarly works have been galvanized across the humanities. For instance, historiography, oral and cultural history, literature, arts, sociology, women’s studies, and visual studies have adopted various types and forms of memory-related approaches, thereby generating a kind of boom in memory studies. In doing so, memory became powerful analytic construct and tool which partially challenges the established history as intellectual discipline and norm. By critically analyzing several television documentary texts on Ahn Jung Keun who is a national hero and historical icon, this study explores the implications of historical representation through documentary texts as well as some problems they embody. In doing so, this work calls for alternative approaches and historical imagination.

As memory has emerged as a key subject for uncovering interpretations of historical events and social practices, scholarly interest in memory and history has been increased in recent years. Collective and personal memory, especially official memory and countermemory have only recently begun to engage with feminist theoretical analyses of gender, sexuality, race, nation, and class. As part of the ongoing argument between history and memory, Asian American literature focuses on how marginalized groups attempt to maintain at the center of official memory what the dominant group would often like to forget. This paper apprpaches memory and cultural politics in the construction of Korean American woman's identity in Dictee and Comfort Woman. Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Nora Okja Keller seek to further projects of empowerment and differentiation through the use of memory as a counter-discursive strategy in their texts. This cultural politics of ethnicity and gender identity in these texts unravels the many complex layers of American ethnic experience. In Dictee and Comfort Woman. the marginalized Korean American women are reconstituted as the memory-subjects by inscribing their place in hisory and by making a space to dis-place history. Historically Korean Americans, like other Asian Americans, have been materially and discursively excluded from the mainstream of the U. S. American life. Korean American women, however, are placed in a more complicated situaltion, in the sense that they not only have to struggle with trauma of colonial experiences and anti-colonial national world, but also in the new western world, they have to assimilate in order to survive. With female perspective, Cha and Keller unveil the colonized history of their homeland as well as the immigrant history of Koreans in America which has been effaced by dominated discourse. Thus Cha and Keller succeed in making available the experience of trauma from multiple perspectives and their narratives necessarily privilege individual memory as a reliable evidentiary source.

This paper investigates the contextual factors surrounding the death of mothers and the ramifications of their absence within families affected by war, with a specific focus on the oral accounts of children who experienced the loss of their mothers during the No Gun Ri massacre in the Korean War. The understanding of women’s victimization during the Korean War was primarily centered on their survivals, resulting in less focus on the deaths of women as mothers in the Nogun-ri tragedy. At that time, it was observed that while men sought shelter for their own safety, women, who were responsible for caring for their families, especially young children and in-laws, endured greater hardship. The death of these women were influenced by the patriarchal family order and prevailing gender norms. In situations where a mother has deceased, surviving fathers have endeavored to address the ensuing familial difficulties by either having their subsequent wives assume the gender role formerly held by the deceased mother, or by seeking alternative ways of fulfilling the responsibilities often associated with that role. However, these types of solutions proved to have limits in terms of familial intimacy and care. In the context of daughters, the absence of biological mothers was regarded as a loss in the access to opportunities and resources, strengthening their role as mothers upon marriage. Sons, on the other hand, showed the tendency to maintain reticent regarding their mothers’ absence. The death of women in the No Gun Ri Massacre highlights the gendered dimension of victimhood during the Korean War.

<Still Hear the Wound: Towards an Asia, Politics, Art To Come> is a project on Asia, politics, and art curated by Zainichi feminist and philosopher Jeonghwa Lee in 2007. The project offers new methodologies, including an artistic and aesthetic response to issues surrounding Japan's responsibility for colonial crime. In other words, this project begins by reflecting the colonial history of Okinawa that overlapped with Korea (or Jeju), and contains questions about how the two regions will pursue new modes of political community. Among them, this paper focues on Soni Kum's <Still Hear the Wound>(2009), which deals with mass suicide during Battle of Okinawa, <Vegetation>(2009) which describes art performance on Jeju Masscare and Tari Ito's <I Will Not Forget You>, which overlaps the issue of mass suicide in Okinawa and the comfort women issue. Furthermore, Soni Kum made the documentary, <Leyte Dream>(2010) on forced Laborers and comfort women in Leyte Island, Philippines and Noriko Sekakuchi made <Women of the Battlefield>(1989), which covered the testimonies about Korean comfort women in New Guinea. I will also analyze these works. These works deal with issues of dialogue and communication between local historical events overlapping across national borders between Korea and Japan as important topics. Therefore, I would like to analyze these film arts using the concept of ‘transnational local', a concept focused on the space of local. A Zainichi scholar, Jinseok Choi , points out that the historical conditions of the transnational local between Korea (or Jeju) and Japan (or Okinawa) are ‘scarring of Japanese imperialism’ and ‘legacy of colonialism’ along with the Cold War. Taking this point into consideration, I would like to see how the above works emphasize dialogue and communication between the locals, which are the basis of solidarity and memory against state violence or imperialist violence, rather than being reduced to other nationalism and globalization. Also, the above works shows ‘traversing, translating and violating of body and place’ through performability of film or performance art which indicates ‘subjective expression technique.’ ‘interaction between real material and the performance of producer or performer,’ ‘the coexistence of actors and spectators.’ This is also well connected with the transnational local of transversality and translatability.

The primary object of this study is to investigate the politics of memory of Japanese military ‘comfort women’ problems at Women’s Active Museum on War and Peace, known as the WAM. For the purpose of this object, this study focuses the exhibition and signification of the ‘comfort women’ at the WAM from the perspective of transnational feminism. The results are as follows. First, the pictures of the women victims of the Japanese military sexual violence(155 women all over Asia during World War II) welcome people who visit the WAM. This exhibition of survivor’s portraits is to free from Korean comfort women. Second, The regular exhibition of the “Comfort Stations” all over Asia is to free from Korean comfort women. Third, the WAM exhibits former soldiers testifying about their crimes in China, Burma, The Philippines, East Timor etc. This exhibition has the effect of showing another face of Japan. Therefore the WAM focuses on the issue of ‘military comfort women,’ those forced to offer sexual service to Japanese soldiers during the Asia–Pacific War. The WAM has been leading political activism against right‐wing nationalists who deny the history of military sexual slavery. But the WAM brings Korean feminist nationalism who tried to clarify the nature of ‘victimihood’ in the context of colonialism political défferance to remember the war and comfort women.

This article examines Han Kang’s novel We Do Not Part by analyzing the actions of its characters as practices of “political care,” thereby investigating how the collective memory of the Jeju 4?3 Uprising is rearticulated through literature. The notion of “political care” extends beyond an individual’s ethical response to another’s suffering, encompassing social responsibility, historical solidarity, and the political capacities of democratic life. Within the novel, Jung-sim is portrayed not merely as a victim of massacre but as an agent of political care who tends to unacknowledged wounds of history and restores the dignity of the dead. Her acts of care take shape as forms of speech that resist enforced silence, transforming private grief into political practice. Kyung-ha and In-sun, as members of the postmemory generation, emerge not as neutral observers but as embodied participants in memory who enter into Jung-sim’s pain and form a ‘democratic camp of care.’ Through the practice of listening with their whole bodies, they confront the difficulty of representation and tend to the long-suppressed memory of 4?3 with multiple senses, enabling Jung-sim’s acts of care to be narrated within the realm of public memory. Ultimately, the novel illuminates care as both a public responsibility and a shared social resource, demonstrating that in the absence of state cooperation or institutional support, individual acts of care can sustain a politics of memory and solidarity. At the same time, it emphasizes the continuing necessity of collective journeys toward truths that remain unrevealed.

This paper aims to examine the political practicality of the concept of remembrance presented in Benjamin's later philosophy of history. First, the meaning of the concept of remembrance, Eingedenken is examined in relation to Benjamin's two critical issues, historical materialism and theology. From the perspective of historical materialism, he presents the concept of Eingedenken as a counterpoint to positivistic historicism and the concept of progress based on technological determinism and quantitative accumulation, and defines history as a history of oppression and of the struggles of the oppressed. In this concept of history, the oppressed past is presented as a major task of reflection. Therefore, Benjamin reveals that reflection on the temporality is a prerequisite for this historical awareness and introduces theology into materialistic histor y. Unlike contemporary Marxism, for Benjamin, the struggle of the oppressed is closely related to the time of the ‘present toward the past’ rather than the future. In examining this connection, we reveal that reflecting on the memories and daily lives of the oppressed is at the core of the political practice of the concept of remembrance. Finally, keeping in mind the criticisms surrounding the political practice of Benjamin's concept of memory, we examine how his politics of remembrance, which emphasizes the ‘past’, is related to the new society that the oppressed will achieve. In the process, we examine his politics of remembrance in relation to the ‘politics of memory’ following massacres that occurred in the 20th century and reveal the meaning of political practice in the concept of memory.

The following paper approaches the issue of memory politics in a unified Korea by focusing on what is likely to be the most contentious problem, namely, what to do with the numerous statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il that now stand in North Korea. Referring both to recent South Korean research as well as the historical experiences of Germany and Estonia, the paper argues for a compromise between those two countries’ approaches. According to this proposal, the central government would remove most of the problematic statues in a discreet and orderly manner, as opposed to the German practice of letting regional and municipal governments decide their fate. But in contrast to the central-government intransigence that led to deadly rioting in Estonia in 2007, a few statues of Kim Il Sung as a young anti-Japanese fighter should be left where they are, albeit with new plaques, in emulation of the German solution, that subject them to re-interpretation.
