In this article, taking the Beolgyo area of Boseong-gun as an example, I examine the formation of Japanese communities and the characteristics of their colonial memories. I try to look at the structural characteristics of the colonial society established by the colonial powers in Beolgyo, their relations to the governing policy of the Government-General, the impact on the local community, the specific aspects of the national conflict that occurred in the formation of Japanese society, and how they were resolved or expanded, etc. Japanese colonial rule had a complex structure. It was not done only by bureaucrats or police centered on the Japanese Government-General in Korea. Korean Colony was maintained and strengthened through many Japanese based in each region. The Japanese residing in Korea were the roots of stable colonial rule. They were the real rulers of the region. They recalled colony Korea from the position of ‘colonial subject’ through colonial management and daily experiences. The ‘position’ and ‘the mission’ of Korea in the category of imperial Japan were so important that they could be regarded as the ‘lifeblood of the empire’. The Japanese, who had the experience of dominating Korea in areas with convenient geographical access, enjoyed the privileges of the colonists with the ruler’s consciousness and mentality. Korea was the strating point and lifeblood of imperial Japan. The Japanese who entered the colony varied from soldiers, police, bureaucrats, landlords and capitalists, to the low-income class at the bottom. It can be said that Japan’s colonial governing structure was maintained through a number of unknown Japanese people under the protection of the ruling class. In other words, the colonial society had a pyramid structure dominated by a large number of Japanese people working in various non-production sectors, including landlords and merchants, with the government-general officials and the military-police system at its peak.

This article examines the representation of colonial memory and pro-Japanese affect in contemporary Korean occult cinema. Focusing on Na Hong-jin’s The Wailing (2016) and Jang Jae-hyun’s Exhuma (2024), it explores how memories of Japanese colonial rule are reactivated through the antagonistic dynamics of pro-Japanese, anti-Japanese, and anti-colonial affect. Building upon scholarship on Korean occult cinema, including studies of genre hybridity, postcolonialism, historical trauma, and shamanism, the article reconceptualizes chinil (pro-Japanese) not simply as historical collaboration during the colonial period, but as an affective regime through which the unresolved legacy of colonialism continues to shape collective identity, social anxiety, and political antagonism in contemporary Korea. In this sense, Korean occult cinema translates colonial memory into present-day social conflict through the conventions of horror and the occult. The analysis demonstrates that although both films share the concern that unresolved colonial memory continues to haunt the present, they employ fundamentally different representational strategies. The Wailing constructs an atmosphere of uncertainty through the relationships among the Japanese outsider, the shaman Il-gwang, the mysterious woman Moo-myeong, and the policeman Jong-gu. The film depicts a vicious cycle in which anti-Japanese affect paradoxically reinforces pro-Japanese affect, rendering colonial memory as a spectral and uncanny presence. By contrast, Exhuma visualizes colonial memory more explicitly through the pro-Japanese ancestor, the Oni, and the exhumation ritual, while presenting collective solidarity and ritual practice as means of confronting and containing pro-Japanese affect. Whereas The Wailing emphasizes invisibility, ambiguity, and the proliferation of affect, Exhuma historicizes colonial memory and imagines the possibility of communal recovery. This article argues that Korean occult cinema does not merely represent colonial history but transforms it into an affective structure through which contemporary social conflicts are understood and experienced. It further contends that chinil should be understood not only as a historical category referring to colonial collaboration but also as a political affective regime repeatedly mobilized in contemporary struggles over historical memory and postcolonial identity. By translating historical trauma into cinematic affect, Korean occult cinema functions as a cultural medium through which colonial memory is continually reimagined and transmitted to new generations. In doing so, these films suggest that critical engagement with colonial memory remains essential not only for understanding contemporary Korean society but also for fostering historical reflection and a more future-oriented relationship between Korea and Japan.

75 years after the war, as the number of war-experiencers decreased, it became an important task for weathering and preserving war memories, and interest in “Kataribe”, who is succeeded to, is growing. Kataribe not only inherits past memories to subsequent generations, but also plays a role in conveying messages such as peace, human rights and equality. In this study, we analyzed the cases of JapaneseKorean, a fist-generation A and a second-generation B, who had been performed as the Kataribe to convey the experiences of war and colonial past and to inform the situation of Koreans in Japan. As a result, both generation had a commonality in the transmission of cultural memories in terms of memory transfer and succession of war and colonial experiences. However, due to the difference between actual experience and non-experience in colonial past, differences appeared in the roles of the witness and the explainer, and the main mediator in the succession of memory. In conclusion, however, the Kataribe activities of those who succeeded from experience to non-experience played a large role in conveying the memory of Japanese-Korean unknown and the history of the war as a socio-cultural act of the community.

This paper aims at exploring how the rite observed in memory of confucius, the traditional confucius ritual, is reflected into colonial legacies by paying attention to recent studies which tries to translate colonial legacies not only neutral but also adaptive and resistant legacies. The rite observed in memory of confucius was performed to pay tribute to ancestors’ scholastic achievement and their characteristics in a hope that they, scholars in the Joseon Dynasty, could follow their ancestors’ academic achievement. In a colonial period in 1910, Japan allowed only the rite of confucius to be remained after transforming Sungkyungwan to Gyeonghakwon. The Japanese Government General of Korea opened the rite of confucius to the public and changed the time of rite served from the night to the morning. They even changed the date in solar calendar. All these were designed to gather more audiences to lectures by the government general which was scheduled to commence just after the rite. Such polices taken by the government general had degenerated the rite of confucius into the rite for reforming the public, losing its genuine meaning of the divinity. After the liberation, the rite once carried out in spring and autumn had been also served on the Birthday of Confucius. Since in 1961 when the date of the anniversary of Confucius’ death was restored, the rite has been served until now to commemorate its original meaning. It was not until then the rite of Confucius could recover its genuine role of respecting and learning the good deeds and thoughts of ancient sages. The Japanese has degenerated the rite of Confucius to use as means of their reformation policy. In return, many koreans including the Confusions participated the corrupted rite. It was only after the liberation when the rite of Confucius could recover its original form. A series of this course has included reformation policy as a legacy of colonial period, participation the degenerated rite as a legacy of adaption and adjustment, and correction of the rite into original form as a legacy of resistance. I hope this paper would make its own contribution to learn one facet of colonial legacy by exploring how the people had experienced the rite, the traditional inheritance, in the time of confusion of the colonial period and the liberation.
This paper aims to examine the aspects and significance of the memory of Samyeongdang (Yujeong, 1544-1610) from the late Joseon to the Japanese colonial period. This era was a time of cultural upheaval, transitioning from Chinese characters to the Korean alphabet, and a national crisis due to Japan's invasion and colonial rule. During the late Joseon period, traditional intellectuals summoned Samyeongdang as a ‘great man’ (daejangbu) to express their desire to overcome the national crisis. Oh Gye-muk, in particular, wished for Samyeongdang's resurrection to expel foreign powers (Japan), while Hwang Hyeon praised Samyeongdang as a ‘Buddhist great man’ and lamented the reality of being a ‘rotten Confucian scholar’ (puru) who could not act. During the Japanese colonial period, magazines such as 『Seobukhakhoe Wolbo』, 『Byeolgeongon』, and 『Eorini』 portrayed Samyeongdang as a hero who overcame national hardship. In an interview with Han Yong-un published in 『Byeolgeongon』 in 1927, he cited the anecdote of Samyeongdang telling the Japanese general Kato Kiyomasa, “Your head is a treasure”, as the most exhilarating event, thereby inspiring national pride. Meanwhile, attempts to inspire national consciousness through magazine articles and popular novels were often thwarted by Japanese censorship, leading to the deletion of articles or the failure of novels to be published. The significance of this paper lies in its analysis that in the midst of the national crisis of the late Joseon and Japanese colonial periods, Samyeongdang was remembered by traditional intellectuals as a ‘great man’ who could overcome the chaos, and by modern intellectuals as a ‘hero’ who inspired national consciousness.

Memory of Joseon custom through photograph and postcard of Japanese Colonial Period Choi, In-Tag The pictures and postcards created and distributed during Japanese Colonial Period are base data for recovery and reconstruction of custom of the time. However, there are some negative views as they were used as a part of ideology to reinforce the colonial control of Japan as a tool symbolizing the value, uncivilization and barbarism. In other words, theory of cultural evolution which argued that the Joseon culture is subjected to improvement and enlightened by Japanese, the less developed culture, and that it must be civilized through Japanese colonial governing was used in postcard images. Therefore, this study discusses how the “tradition” related postcards present “Joseon” based on the traditional customs of Joseon from Japanese point of view, or even from the Korean point of view. Joseon custom reenacted in the postcard starts from “record” and goes through reenactment of “memory” of others and pose considerable influence on building stereotyped view point on others. This study aims to examine “Joseon folklore and custom” postcards among the images chosen and represented by Japanese during “Japanese Colonial Period”. However, due to the limitation on paper, the study aims to examine the fraction of images from “Shindongkyu Collection” about Joseon custom. However, due to the limitation on paper, only a fraction of images from a huge amount of “Shindongkyu Collection” have been handled and described in the present paper.

This essay studied on the peculiarities of the Shanghai as an international colonial city and examined the Shanghai experience of Korean and Japanese writers in the 1920s and 30s. In addition, I tried to research Kim Kwangju and Yokomitsu Reich’s “Shanghai” and characteristics and distinctiveness which represented in their novels. With the opening of the port, Shanghai quickly emerged as an international city, but it was a colonial international city. With the leased territory of British, the United States, and France, Shanghai quickly became the largest colonial capitalist metropolis in the East, penetrating into the western consumer culture. In the early 20th century, Shanghai was a China’s economic, trade, financial, and cultural center. And Marxism and anarchism were risen also in Shanghai. Joseon politicians and literary scholars including Shin Chaeho, Ahn Changho, Lee Kwangsoo regarded Shanghai as a place of restoration of national rights and acceptance of modern artifacts. On the other hand, Shanghai as an international city has become a subject of longing for Japanese writers in the early 20th century. Nagai Kafu, Tanizaki, Akudakawa and Ryosuke also visited Shanghai and recorded their experiences. Kim Kwangju and Yokomitsu Reich who experienced Shanghai in the mid-20s and mid-30s are writers belonging to the Modernism, and they represented modern Shanghai’s senses in their works. Shanghai, which they expressed, contains the splendor of international cities, decadence, capitalism, greed, opium, and prostitution, but the two writers’ senses are common in nihilism and disillusionment. Kim Kwangju despaired the fact that the patriotic governors of Joseon are living a fallen life unlike their aspirations. Yokomitsu Reich also experienced the realities of the Japanese imperialist through the 5・30 affairs and despair of ‘Asianism’ and Japanese militarism. Their novels have a different gap between empire and colonialism, but they reach a common point of ‘nihilism’ through different experiences and despair.

This article discusses the dynamics of multidirectional memory in the context of the Dutch colonial history in the East Indies (Indonesia). It highlights how silenced narratives?particularly those concerning the Indonesian War of Independence (1945?1949), the suffering of Indonesian “comfort women” during the Japanese occupation, and njai culture?are complexly intertwined with the politics of memory. This paper emphasizes the evolving discourse in the Netherlands, which is now acknowledging and integrating these suppressed histories into a broader narrative framework. This involves a shift from a monolithic memory focused solely on European experiences to a more inclusive and interconnected remembrance that bridges the various cultural and historical experiences of people from the East Indies. Through multidirectional memory, a new solidarity and understanding are being fostered among different groups that challenge the traditional silences and neglect within Dutch collective memory about the country’s colonial past. This collective recognition of colonial histories forms a connecting thread between different cultures and communities, effectively weaving these histories into a worldwide tapestry of multidirectional memory and thereby contributing to a more comprehensive and interconnected global historical understanding.

This paper aims to uncover and introduce materials related to writer Ahn Hoe-nam’s experiences with forced labor mobilization, and to elucidate the reportage-literature significance and limitations of the works he published during the liberation period concerning coal-mining labor. The truth that Ahn sought to convey through fiction was constructed at the intersection of two dimensions: the fact of his own forced mobilization and the discursive landscape produced and circulated by media before and after Korea’s liberation. With this in mind, this study examines materials related to Ahn Hoe-nam’s wartime labor mobilization, newspaper and magazine articles from the liberation period, and novels and poems on forced conscription published after liberation. Through this analysis, the study examines how the (im)mobility experienced by the writer in coal mining within the historical context of the wartime mobilization system was concretized as experiences of remoteness and underground labor and as records of pain and isolation, and discusses the significance of this process. Rather than reproducing the struggles of conscripted laborers, Ahn focused on documenting and exposing the oppressive nature and harm of carbon technocracy he experienced in Japanese coal mines. His fiction writing was, first and foremost, an act of remembering and reflecting on his past as a coal mine laborer. At the same time, it served to represent the resentment and wounds of conscripted laborers who, after suffering in the mines, returned to Korea only to face shortages of goods, housing, and employment. Furthermore, by quoting and criticizing wartime newspaper articles in his fiction, he exposed the falsity of such media and illuminated the colonial subject’s complicity and indifference. In doing so, he criticized pro-Japanese writers and prompted reflection on the ambivalent feelings Koreans held toward conscription. Although Ahn Hoe-nam’s fiction dealing with forced labor displays an excess of self- consciousness, the complex awareness and emotions of the conscripted workers reflected in his stories demonstrate that reportage literature achieved a sense of realism not only in its representation of physical reality but also on an emotional level.

This study examines the ways in which Park Kyung-ri’s 1960s short stories? The Noblewoman, The Period of Fantasy, and Old Tales?represent memories of the colonial period. The Noblewoman, published shortly after the April 19 Revolution, is the first work in which such memories appear, albeit in a fragmentary form. While the story portrays a character suspected of pro-Japanese collaboration during the late colonial period, it remains silent on this issue. The colonial past, at this point, is depicted merely as one scene within the turbulent flow of history from the colonial era to the April Revolution, without yet attaining concrete historical significance. For Park, the colonial memory was not yet her own, nor had it reached the stage of historical signification. After the Korea-Japan agreement in 1965, Park’s representation of colonial memory moves toward a deeper engagement with its historical meaning. The Period of Fantasy transforms her personal recollections of colonial childhood into fiction, intertwining nationalist nostalgia with personal sentiment. The story vividly reveals Park’s complex interiority as a “colonized subject.” In Old Tales, the memory of national resistance comes to the forefront, yet under the entanglement of postcolonial and Cold War conditions, such memory becomes distorted or fails to be transmitted. Across these works, Park’s mode of representing colonial memory in the 1960s increasingly gravitates toward nationalism, prefiguring the grand historical vision of Land(Toji). As a “colonized subject,” Park’s postcolonial remembering inevitably produces omissions and excesses, resulting in narrative fissures and contradictions. Yet these traces themselves testify to the significance of Park’s literary world as a crucial record of the complexity and paradoxes inherent in Korea’s colonial memory.

How to come to terms with the colonial past? How to integrate colonial memory into national history? By comparing the views of Pierre Nora and the authors of a book, Les memoires dangereuses, this review essay aims at exploring the way in which colonial memory can trigger reconfiguration of national history narrative. For Nora, recent French war of memory tends to politicize and instrumentalize historiography and endanger the French national identity. For Benjamin Stora and Alexis Jenni, the authors of Les memoires dangereuses, it can contribute to open new perspectives of national history, including the Mediterranean transnational history. For Stora and Jenni, national identity itself is a fiction, or if exists, it is in constant flux.

This study aims to explain how colonial memory forms narrative in the Kim Gwangsik’s novel, 『The Colony』. In 1950s Kim Gwangsik published short stories about the alienation of the city people after war, but in 1960s he published stories about his own colonial experience. Especially in 『The Colony』 he attempted to compose his contemporary self through the reproduction of his colonial memories. In the first half of 『The Colony』 the main character, Han Dongsa, goes to Manchuria in oder to desert the student soldiers corps. The second half of the novel mainly shows his experience in Manchuria. The main characters’ love story is elevated to nationalism based on this storyline. Nationalism is the main concept of this novel, and it is used to lead narrative. However it fails to be consistent in showing the narrative of nationalism by adding postwar humanism and other concepts.

This article is about a certain way of narrating colonial memory in texts including Korean novels during the Liberation Period of Korea. In this period, colonial memories began to be descrived which had been impossible to be descrived itself in the colonial period. Colonial experiences of Korean male who were put in prison or drafted into Japanese military or work in the wartime by Japan, appeared in novels. Among them, were of course revolutionists or socialists who couldn't help going unerground and political exiles who jonined in national liberation movement abroad. In shorts, Korean male suffering from Japanese rule appeared as main roles of narratives on colonial memory, to the extent that Liberation meant these men' return to home or farther land and that narrative of men's sufferings was prior to the women's. Here, colonial memory as narrative of men's suffering provided dubious and inevitable affirmation of everydayness under colonial situation, as it could be said that they were compelled to choose pro-Japanese act for living of their wife and children. But it was difficult to recover musculinity because of the very memory of pro-Japanese.

While Yi T’aejun’s “Before and After Liberation”(Munhak, 1946) is widely considered to be a valuable literary testimony of a writer’s colonial experience, reflective of the post-1945 Korean literary world as well as other sociopolitical situations, what is less known is that Yi made revisions to the text when he included it in his 1949 short story collection The First Combat. By analyzing both versions of this autobiographical story, this paper investigates the ways in which the memory of the colonial past―especially of collaboration, or ch’inil―was, or had to be, changed in 1949 North Korea, how the writer’s self-reflective voice disappeared from the narrative, and how a simplistic nationalist contrast between coercive Japanese versus resistant Koreans was foregrounded. The revised text sometimes conforms to assertive, ideological cliches of North Korean literature, at odds with the subtlety and uncertainty shown in the original text, and sometimes, reveals the writer’s anxiety of confessing his experience relating to collaboration. This paper makes a contribution to the study of Yi T’aejun’s post-1945 literature by introducing this 1949 revision of the text to academic discussion as well as by tracing a writer’s anxiety and difficulties in literary practice in the formative years of North Korea.

In both Japan and South Korea, the memories that victims of Japanese colonialism and the Pacific War remember have been forgotten by ruling classes in each country and their transnational coalition. However, the increasing influence of right-wing nationalism in Japan and the democratization in South Korea, which have brought out change within ruling classes and their transnational coalition, have been providing new opportunity to set up a frame for social movement by the victims of the colonialismand the War. This paper mainly focuses on reconstructing a frame for victims‘ solidarity based on their common experience and memory of Japanese colonialism and the Pacific War. Especially paying attention to a transnational solidarity between Japanese and Korean victims of nuclear bombs, it argues that their common experience and memory across the border could be important resources to establish a frame for transnational social movement against statism and right-wing nationalism in both Japan and South Korea and be central to establishing a transnational solidarity for the recognition of their memory and reparation.
