This article examines the representation of colonial memory and pro-Japanese affect in contemporary Korean occult cinema. Focusing on Na Hong-jin’s The Wailing (2016) and Jang Jae-hyun’s Exhuma (2024), it explores how memories of Japanese colonial rule are reactivated through the antagonistic dynamics of pro-Japanese, anti-Japanese, and anti-colonial affect. Building upon scholarship on Korean occult cinema, including studies of genre hybridity, postcolonialism, historical trauma, and shamanism, the article reconceptualizes chinil (pro-Japanese) not simply as historical collaboration during the colonial period, but as an affective regime through which the unresolved legacy of colonialism continues to shape collective identity, social anxiety, and political antagonism in contemporary Korea. In this sense, Korean occult cinema translates colonial memory into present-day social conflict through the conventions of horror and the occult. The analysis demonstrates that although both films share the concern that unresolved colonial memory continues to haunt the present, they employ fundamentally different representational strategies. The Wailing constructs an atmosphere of uncertainty through the relationships among the Japanese outsider, the shaman Il-gwang, the mysterious woman Moo-myeong, and the policeman Jong-gu. The film depicts a vicious cycle in which anti-Japanese affect paradoxically reinforces pro-Japanese affect, rendering colonial memory as a spectral and uncanny presence. By contrast, Exhuma visualizes colonial memory more explicitly through the pro-Japanese ancestor, the Oni, and the exhumation ritual, while presenting collective solidarity and ritual practice as means of confronting and containing pro-Japanese affect. Whereas The Wailing emphasizes invisibility, ambiguity, and the proliferation of affect, Exhuma historicizes colonial memory and imagines the possibility of communal recovery. This article argues that Korean occult cinema does not merely represent colonial history but transforms it into an affective structure through which contemporary social conflicts are understood and experienced. It further contends that chinil should be understood not only as a historical category referring to colonial collaboration but also as a political affective regime repeatedly mobilized in contemporary struggles over historical memory and postcolonial identity. By translating historical trauma into cinematic affect, Korean occult cinema functions as a cultural medium through which colonial memory is continually reimagined and transmitted to new generations. In doing so, these films suggest that critical engagement with colonial memory remains essential not only for understanding contemporary Korean society but also for fostering historical reflection and a more future-oriented relationship between Korea and Japan.
