Capitalism is, according to the Encyclopædia Britannica, an economic system that is based on private ownership of the means of production and the creation of goods or services for profit. Most dictionaries emphasize that capitalism is an economic system. But we use generally in everyday life the term capitalism to remark about a cultural phenomenon, as well about an economic system. The term capitalism is ambiguous and it has multiple meaning. What is capitalism? This article examine the history of term capitalism. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term capitalism was first used by novelist William Makepeace Thackeray in 1854 in The Newcomes, where he meant “having ownership of capital”. Also according to the Oxford English Dictionary, Carl Adolph Douai, a German-American socialist and abolitionist, used the term private capitalism in 1863. The initial usage of the term capitalism in its modern sense has been attributed to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. After Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the term capitalism has a meaning of economic system. Max Weber use, by contrast to Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, the term capitalism for explain the non-economic aspect of capitalism. Fernand Braudel and Immanuel Wallerstein analyse the totality of capitalism, a historical system including politics, economy and culture.

This paper examines Hobsbawm’s view about center-left social democracy and Euro-centrism. His view on ‘the short 20th century’ in The age of Extremes was basically eurocentric because he thought that there had been euro-centric capitalist world system and political elites in Third World had adopted eurocentric model such as ‘westernization’ and ‘modernization.’ Seeing the proliferation of post-colonialism theory, emergence of the global history, rapid development of East Asia and South Asia, he began to recognize partly that euro-centric world had changed into diversified world. His political view had also been changed, undergoing three main periods in ‘the age of extremes.’ In the age of catastrophe he supported revolution theory of Bolshevik and anti fascist Popular Front movement. In the Golden Age, , he criticized strongly USSR’s invasion into Hugary in 1956 and sympathized with Euro-communism. He did not agree with New Left and ‘1968 Revolution’ that seemed to lack party system, social class base, concrete alternative to future. While he did not break from the Communist party in Britain, he supported center-left wing in the Labor Party that tried to be with middle class.

During the 1920s and 1930 in Korea, the concepts of “woman”, “man” and “heterosexual system” in a modern sense were being newly constructed while the colonial disciplinary power, medical power, and the capitalistic consumerism. By analyzing the representations of the typical features that constituted the boundary of the ‘Heterosexuality’ discourse―pervert, hermaphrodite, transvestite, and female homosexual’s, this study examines the dynamics of the construction of normal man and woman. Especially, this study focuses on the ways in which the discipline functions to produce the binary gender norms. Examining the construction of the boundaries of “heterosexual system”, “woman” and “man” by the matter of “pervert” sexuality in the 1920s and 1930s, this study reveals the historicity of “heterosexism” as a modern construction.

From Maurice Bardèche to Robert Faurisson, from Paul Rassinier toPierre Guillaume, the Holocaust denial proliferates in France after theSecond World War. Refusing the existence of the gaz chambers in NaziConcentration camps, they insist that the ‘myth of the holocaust’ is inventedto diabolize Hitler in charge of the Second World War. In this perspective, the Nazi extermination policy is a pure fabrication and just a victimizationprocess of the jews, aiming at legitimizing the establishment of jewishstate, Israel, founded by Zionists. In the name of Positivism, they refusethe intention of Hitler that is hard to justify on account of the absence ofarchives. Then, they set out a logical argument that the massacre of jewishpeople isn’t a historical fact but a ‘invented myth’ with the exaggeratednumber of victims from which can be usually arisen in war-time. Thisargument becomes a theoretical base which gives a indulgence to theNational socialism, and allows the extreme right wing to reset the newpolitical agenda in the post-war period. They call themselves their modes of thought ‘revisionism’, but this is distinguished from the usual meaning of this term: their revisionism refuses historical fact itself, whereas it means normally a different interpretation of a admitted historical event. French historian, Henri Rousso suggests calling it ‘negationism’ which highlights political aspects of this historical discourses system.

The notion of ‘bourgeois revolution’ was not formulated for the first time by Marx, but he borrowed it from the liberal historiography of the French Restoration. And we can trace its origin into the concept of social revolution during the English Revolution. What Marx did is that he systematized that notion, furnishing it the long-term perspective on ‘transition from feudalism to capitalism’ in terms of historical materialism, and providing it some fertile reflections about the revolutionary agents and historical results of bourgeois revolution in the light of personal experiences during the German Revolution of 1848-1852. The classical tradition of Marxism produced various theories on the bourgeois revolution in the prospect of the future Russian Revolution, starting from Marx. The ‘bourgeois-democratic revolution’ of Lenin, the ‘permanent revolution’ of Trotsky, and the ‘passive revolution’ of Gramsci are its best examples. However, the rise and seizure of power of Stalin made the schematic doctrine of bourgeois revolution with historical stages theory into orthodoxy. Unfortunately it was this kind of theory of revolution that the Marxist historians encountered, when the notion of bourgeois revolution materialized into the concrete full-fledged historical writings for the first time in 1930s and 40s. Therefore today, to retrace the historical lineages of conception ‘bourgeois revolution’ means to restore its various and fertile tradition.

Postcolonial Revolutionary Frantz Fanon’s Resistance and National Liberation Movement Jae-Won Lee(Yonsei University) Frantz Fanon - a prominent figure of the 20th French intellectual society, born in French Martinique and who fought against colonialism through the political struggle and literary resistance - has long been forgotten in France. It is not difficult to understand this kind of his position in France when we remember the fact that he criticized colonial tyranny within assimilationism. For the French, referring to Fanon is revealing their shameful past. Not only in french but also in western academic world, he was considered as ‘an apostle of violence’, with his name forbidden to be mentioned, and even in Algeria, where he led independence struggle as a psychiatrist, he was not fairly evaluated. This thesis aims to give prominence to Fanon’s political practicality, trying to correct the misunderstanding and distorted evaluation of Fanon. There are various words to call Fanon ; a French and a black Martinique, a psychiatrist and an Algerian liberation struggle Champion, an anticolonial practitioner and a postcolonial theorist. However, many people still remember him as a symbol of intellectual in action. Fanon, who led resistance movement as a prominent figure of FLN, was an intellectual who emphasized the politics and practicality of the theory more than any other intellectual. Through this thesis, I hope that you will find the way of the third world postcolonial liberation movement by putting Fanon’s ideas and life in the new colonial international relationship which still works on in the name of neoliberal globalization and that you will understand the meaning and the influence of material and mental decolonization Fanon offered in our age.

This paper examines how the representation of the culture of ‘others’ through colonial and human exhibitions in the early 20th century Japan connected to conἀgurate anthropological knowledge and the expansion of Japanese empire. The first human exhibition was held at the Anthropological Gallery of the Domestic Industrial Exhibition in 1903. Tsuboi Shogoro, professor of anthropology of Tokyo Imperial University and his anthropology laboratory, strongly supported the formation of the Anthropological Gallery. Professor Tsuboi appraised the importance of the exhibition in order to the popularize the anthropological knowledge. The 1912 Colonial Exhibition in Tokyo was the more huge and systematic human exhibition. In the 1912 Exhibition not only Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan but Sakhalin and Hokkaido exhibited.

This study aims to interpret some works of Andrea Mantegna as political propagandas which show inequality of power or resources in Renaissance patronage. Mantegna, one of the most famous antiquarian painters in the Early Italian Renaissance who set the bridge between the pictorial world of the painters and the intellectual world of Humanism, also was one of the first courtly artists of the Renaissance. More specifically, it was in Mantua that Mantegna served for the marquises of the Gonzaga family. In that regard, this study analyzes three works of Mantegna which were produced while he were staying in the Gonzaga court, ceiling- and wall-paintings of Camera Picta, Trionfi di Cesare and Madonna della vittoria. In particular, by situating these works in a proper historical terrain and interpreting them within a power-structure of the Renaissance court, this study argues that those are the political images displaying the authority of the Gonzaga princes and that Mantegna was a painter-courtier as much as he was a humanist artist.

Noh Suntag’s Forgetting Machine is a photography representation of the changing political landscapes of May 18 of Gwangju in terms of memory discourse. It is a mockery and criticism of unfinished history of May 18 of Gwangju in Korea. His Forgetting Machine is not a simple photography representation of May 18 of Gwangju but of represented history of post-May 18 of 1980 as well as a discourse of photography representation in terms of memory discourse. Forgetting Machine never tries to show us the May 18 in a tragic way to consume the history but to recollect the unfinished history through memory discourse. Noh took photographs of the people, politicians, the places that seemed not to be related with the May 18 of Gwangju. He represented the post-May 18 of Gwangju landscape in a weird and twisted manners. That is because he maintains that ‘May Gwangju’ should not be reconstructed by the fixed history but by the relative history through contemporary context of politics. History should be interpreted by memory besides records in terms of relative point of view as photography is to be. he begins his narrative from the portraits abandoned in Mangwoldong cemetery and ends with the buddha-bodhisattva statues abandoned in Woonju temple near Gwangju. His two photographs of a lying Buddha and a lying man on a grass show us the open end of his history in an epic form.
