The purpose of this study is to examine the acquisition of Korean ‘eye’ idioms by second or foreign language learners of Korean, whose native language is English. ‘Eye’ idioms in both Korean and English are collected and compared for their semantico-functional characteristics. For the purpose of a consistent and contrastive analysis between these two, new criteria for classification of the target idioms into relevant 4 types are suggested. In order to examine the semantico-functional characteristics of these idioms in the acquisition process, an experiment is designed for a total of 20 learners of Korean in the intermediate and advanced levels. For the experiment, two kinds of tests are devised and administered. Results are analyzed in terms of types of target idioms, learners’ proficiency levels and the familiarity of idioms by appearance in the text books. Based on the findings of the study, a few pedagogical suggestions on an effective education of Korean ‘eye’ idioms to foreign learners are proposed.

The subject of this Study is to inspect the change and characteristic of word list for basic vocabulary in the education of modern Japanese. Hence, this study deals with the problem how the basic vocabulary for education of modern Japanese has chosen according to the times, based on Sakamotoitirou kyouikukihongoi and shinkyouikukihongoi . The common word list, additional word list and excluded word list are analyzed with the semantic distribution of bunruigoihyou in the aspect of the change of lexicon of basic vocabulary. On the base of it, it is remarkable that there is an addition of foreign words in kyouikukihongoi . It is closely related to the additional selection of vocabulary regarding necessities of life like food, clothing and house, considering the westernization of life style of people, as well as the introduction of names of objects and technical terms. Moreover, it is observed that there is a large increase of foreign words related to metal activities of human in the education for Middle school students. The stage of middle school is the linking stage to the adult education for cultural subjects and major fields of studies in universities, whereas the stages of the lower grades only needs the basic vocabulary regarding the everyday life. In conclusion, it is shown that the change and characteristic of kyouikukihongoi in modern Japanese leads the more effective education with the reduction of words and the addition of foreign words in the education reflects the westernizing life style of people. This paper investigates the image of Asian Couries in Korea including Japan, China, Singapore, India, Indonesia and Malaysia. To do this, this paper analyzes the Anholt Nation Brands Index which measures people's perception of a country across six areas of national competence. These six areas are Tourism, Exports/Products, Governance, Investment/Immigration, Culture/Heritage and People. This paper also investigates the Korean news media since "quantitative content analysis is the systematic assignment of communication content to categories according to rules, and the analysis of relationships involving those categories using statistical methods" (Riffe, 2005:3). Therefore the analysis of the Korean daily news paper Chosun shows us the perceived image of these six Asian Countries in Korea. To conclude this paper shows that almost all of these Asian countries suffer from negative perceptions in Korea.

The parallel corpus is today accepted as a useful tool in the translational studies, because the researchers can observe many translational examples with the parallel corpus. This paper aims to introduce a statistical method in France, called textometry, which enable to extract translational equivalences from parallel corpora or translation corpora. The textometry execute various statistical methods targeted at textual units (words, phrases, sentences, etc.) in a parallel corpus divided into the tokens. Using quantitative evidences by the textometry, researchers can verify the translational relation of linguistic units in translational texts.

Readability is commonly defined as a statistical scale for measuring the ease of reading and understanding a text. In this paper, we propose that paragraph length, sentence length, and word length are applicable to readability metrics for Korean texts. A correlation between these readability metrics and text levels is statistically analyzed using correlation analysis and simple and multiple linear regression analyses based on data as found in Korean learning materials. Paragraph length and sentence length show a steady upward slope with increasingly higher learning levels, while word length has a downward sloping relationship with the elementary level only. This correlation can also be applied to materials evaluation focused on the arrangement of learning levels and chapters with respect to readability. This applicability is demonstrated by two statistical methods. First, cluster analysis is the assignment of a set of texts by level or by chapter into subsets sharing similar readability scales to evaluate materials arrangements in accordance with readability scales. Second, regression model with a breakpoint (Baayen 2008) divides a linear relation of readability scales into two models having a different slope so that we can explore a trend change of readability scales in materials.

The purpose of this study is to analyze semantic relations of semes of 'Badak', a noun with a meaning 'below'. In this paper, 'Badak' is set into 12 semes that revert to semantic features and are redescribed. Through these features, the lexicon(words) related to 'Badak' has been examined on the relations of antonymy, synonymy, hypernymy and hyponymy. 'Badak' has the antonymy relation with 'ceiling, cap, upper limit price, land' etc. and has the synonymy relation with 'base line, the very bottom, the lowest price (lower limit Price), a flat, the lower class, texture, base (bottom)' etc. 'Badak' has the hypernymy relation with 'below, price, interior, space' etc. and has the hyponymy relation with 'floor, ground, palm' etc. Through this study, it can be verified that there are different semantic relations among each single meaning(monosemy) of a multivocal morpheme. Meanwhile, these results will be available for teaching foreign students as vocabulary items in the Korean language education.

This paper investigates on the adopted words of ABCge(ABC契, 1909) by Nam-Seon Choi from Japanese versions. And also it observes Choi's original idea as a consequence in comparison with the examinations of survey data. The achievement of the research is same as the following. According to the comparison between ABCkumiai(ABC組合, 1902) by Hoitsuan Hara and ABCge(ABC 契, 1909) by Nam-Seon Choi, Choi had words that could be regarded as Shinkango(新漢語, words created at Meiji era to express new conceptional words from West), for example, ‘individual(個人), communist(共産黨), terrorism(恐嚇), republic(共和), nationality(國粹), power(權力), right(權利), idea(理想), civilized(文明人), democracy(民主政 治), thinker(思想家), patriot(愛國者), savage(野蠻), barbarism(野蠻人), duty(義務), forward march(前進), principle(主義), necessity(必要)'. These words can be said the result of progressive attitude for accepting new cultural concept from Western. On the other hand, 'cafe(茶館), cartridge (彈丸包)’ is thought to be Choi's newly coined words. Also, hakge(學藝) and minzu(民主), part of Choi's plural words, are transitional words to express West's 'science' and 'Republic'.

L1-Transfer in the Acquisition of English Unaccusativity by Korean Speakers

The previous L2-studies on English unaccusativity found that overgeneration of passive unaccusatives is particularly prevalent among Korean speakers, which suggests that L1-transfer is operative in this domain. Nevertheless, the role and extent of L1-transfer hasn't received due attention. To contribute to the accurate characterization of the phenomenon, this paper examines the relevance of L1-transfer in this domain, using a passivization diagnostic. The findings of the study show that Korean speakers experienced more difficulties with particular subtypes of passive unaccusatives, whose Korean counterparts include either the morpheme ci- or consist of a verbal noun and hata. It is argued that transfer of a multi-function of the ci- and of unique properties of lexical passives in Korean are held responsible.

Cross-sectional Analysis of KFL Students’ Requests and Refusals

This study investigates the pragmatic competence and development of learners of Korean as a foreign language (KFL) by examining their performance of the speech acts of request and refusal. It explores the developmental patterns and situational variation for the two speech acts―request and refusal―and also explores the possibility of teaching pragmatics successfully in a KFL setting. Data related to the request and refusal speech acts were collected through Cartoon Discourse Completion Tasks (CDCT). Ten beginner-level and ten intermediate-level students of Korean courses at a university in the United States participated in this study. Nine Korean native speakers (KNS) also participated in the study. The results show that although there was a little development in the intermediate-level KFL students, the students were more focused on the semantic meaning, without clearly understanding the pragmatic function of various Korean expressions. This study suggests that students should practice Korean while imagining various social situations, and they should be explicitly taught how to act appropriately in various common speech act situations.
