This paper discusses Yeats’s fools in “Two songs of a Fool” and “Another Song of a Fool” from The Wild Swans at Coole together with his philosophical work A Vision. In A Vision he locates the Fool in a prominent position, the phase 28, the last phase of the moon. Yeats considers the Fool the embodiment of a special kind of wisdom that is far different from common wisdom. This paper examines the various aspects of Yeatsian Fool by focusing on such the important symbols as “the hare”, “the butterfly” and “the rose.” This shows us Unity of Yeatsian Fool by suggesting counterpoint between free from physical world and all wisdom Fool possesses.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze Hamlet’s role-playing from the perspective of stage clowns’ traditions in Shakespearean theatre. First of all, I propose three kinds of Shakespearean clowns: professional actor- clowns, mock-clowns and clownlike role-playing. In Shakespeare’s comedies, clowns, or often called as a fool, are a kind of theatrical device to encourage the festivity and dynamics of the play or its performance, crossing the boundary between the stage and the audience. They are like a critical advisor within the play, while communicating directly with audience as an interpreter or a mediator like Greek chorus. Shakespeare’s tragedies are no exception. In Hamlet, it is Hamlet himself who plays a role of a clown by putting an antic disposition on. His mask allows him to enjoy the liminal freedom of playing at the area of platea, where he can view his world from a distance and closely connect with audience as a clown does. Hamlet also leads other characters, such as Polonius, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to share his role of clowning. They function as mock-clowns, unconsciously sharing Hamlet’s clowning for the effect of comic relief. In addition, Hamlet continuously prepares for his final goal of revenge on Claudius in his main plot through this comically metaphoric subplot playing with his mock-clowns. Therefore, Hamlet’s clowning strategy accomplishes Shakespearean theatrical rhythm which mutually complements tragic seriousness and comic playfulness.

This paper examines Junichiro Tanizaki's passion for movies and Naomi's image reproduced through the screen. The novel ’A Fool’s Love’ (1924) is the first fulllength novel written by Tanizaki after he moved to Kansai immediately after the Great Kanto Earthquake. Naomi's image in the novel was often analyzed as a satire on Japanese people's excessive admiration for the West. In addition, research discussing the relationship between the novel ’A Fool’s Love’ and film tends to focus on the analysis of the contemporary films and actresses that influenced the representation of the unique character of Naomi. The current study focused on two films directed by Keigo Kimura, which were reborn based on the original postwar novel ’A Fool’s Love’, and examined the representational aspects of the female protagonist Naomi in light of the historical background. The process of George teaching Naomi English, music, and dance to become an ideal woman is the same in the novel and the two movies. However, although Naomi has grown physically, mentally things did not go as George expected. The two films led to very different endings as Naomi became aware of her physical attractiveness, transformed into a seductress, and was discovered by George. By comparing the Keigo Kimura's 1949 and 1960 films with the original novel, this paper examines changes in the perception of women and gender within the context of the times.

This study examines the Lives , which were written between the ninth and eleventh century, of Andrew the Fool and Basil the Younger to investigate the shared cultural identity and literary taste of their contemporary Byzantines. The anonymous authors of these texts moved the hearts of their audience by writing the stories that stood outside of the expected horizon of their time. Through this study, the scholarship will be introduced to the fact that Byzantine hagiography is not merely a genre of religious literature and thus can be utilized as a bridge between cultural and social historical studies. These two Lives quenched the cultural thirst of the middle Byzantine audience by discussing about eschatological and mystical issues. This study introduces their narrative structure, literary message, and historical impact on the cults of the saints and subsequent hagiographical productions. Thus, at the time, the Byzantines employed the genre of hagiography as a means of projecting their personal voice rather than naively reading them as a piece of religious literature.

This is a study on the significance and functions of laughter implicated in the fool stories, a genre of orally transmitted folklore tales in Korea. To that end, this study first sought to analyze significance of laughter in fool stories by the angles on fool. I inspect the angles through ‘in text, text and world, story-teller and audience’ First of all, in text, the points of view to fool are divided into ridicule and sympathy. Next, in text and world, a correspondence between the world and the text is important. Last, the communication between the storyteller and the audience is important in the field of storytelling. Second, this study also explores the significance and functions of laughter in the fool stories. First of all, laughter also directly hinges upon understanding, with the ‘extendability and reduction of distance’. generated by laughter. Laughter depends on how the listener views or thinks of the character generating laughter in the orally told stories. Next, ‘The crossing of reality and fantasy’ means that fool stories sometimes contains the real content, sometimes unrealistic content. Last, ‘Interact with a laughter’ is an indispensable element in these stories by creating the dynamism of narration. When narrator tells these stories with a superior linguistic fluency and when the audiences respond to the stories actively, laughter is multiplied.

A purpose of this work is to study the meaning of the existences of Goethe and Jesus for Ryunosuke Akutagawa by focusing on Goethe and comparing Goethe with Jesus. After studying with emphasis on autobiographical works, The Man of the West and the Fool’s Life, it turned out that Akutagawa had realized Goethe and Jesus as the two contrasting figures. Akutagawa, who was devoted to Goethe, had strong admiration to Goethe’s vivid activities as an author and politician. Akutagawa considered Goethe as the greater being than Jesus, because Goethe showed amazing talents in various areas without being captured by the “destiny”, while he regarded Jesus as the one who was born as a “son of destiny” and lived His entire life governed by the “destiny”. In addition, Akutagawa thought Goethe knew how to get on well in the world, while he considered Jesus as the one unsuccessful in life due to His lack in worldly wisdom. After all, Akutagawa’s own notion about life is reflected in his such viewpoint. In summary, Goethe was the one on whom Akutagawa put his own hope, while Jesus was Akutagawa’s own portrait of repentance. Through this study, it turned out that Akutagawa’s viewpoints toward the life and destiny were represented in the lives of Goethe and Jesus.

Focusing on Sesi-gi(歲時記), Sesokgisok-si(歲時記俗詩), and Poetry of New Year’s Eve (除夕詩) in Joseon, this study examines the customs of Jeseok in Joseon and also considers ‘Suse’ naturalized soundly as one of our customs though recognized as a custom originating from China and ‘Selling a fool’ that is thought to have not properly settled as our custom. Poetry of New Year’s Eve is a poem based on reflective thoughts to look back on the year passed on the last day of the year or pledges to welcome the new year, so it tends to mention various customs of New Year’s Eve naturally. It was steadily created for 700 years or so from Yi Gyu-bo in Goryeo to the end of Joseon. It can be used as an auxiliary material to study the customs of Jeseok properly because it plays positive roles in letting us know the customs not recorded in either Sesi-gi or Sesigisok-si that began to be written actively after the 18th century. Chapter 2 sums up the customs of New Year’s Eve in Joseon, and Chapter 3 examines ‘Suse’ that originated in China but came to be localized as a Korean-style custom. In particular, this study explains the reason for doing ‘Suse’ in relation to ‘Sugyeongsin(守庚申)’ in Taoism, and our own custom that eyebrows will turn white if we sleep in New Year’s Eve implies that even though it was a custom originating from China but became naturalized as our own custom according to our style. Lastly, Chapter 4 examines ‘Selling a fool’, a custom of New Year’s Eve often appearing in Poetry of New Year’s Eve, but not in Sesi-gi or Sesigisok-si, from the perspective of the falsity of New Year’s Eve customs found in Jeseok-si. Selling a fool’ was introduced to Korea through Beomseongdae’s <Maechiaesal[賣癡獃詞]> that deals with the New Year’s Eve customs of O(吳) in the Song Dynasty. Although ‘Selling a fool[’ was a very interesting custom for writers to use it as a theme or subject matter of their poems, the people judged it to be inappropriate to be accepted as their seasonal custom; therefore, it seems to have failed to be settled soundly as one of our customs.

This paper studies Time and Space in Fool for Love by Sam Shepard, based on Time concept of Henri Bergson and Heterotopia of Michel Foucault. Bergson identifies time with duration, which means that the parts of time, unlike the parts of space, do not exist separately. Duration is an immeasurable flow or continuous progression of time where past, present, and future are dynamically fused and dissolve into an unbroken flux. The Old Man, a ghostlike character, appears on stage as a special presence. He is the dead father of Eddie and May but he appears as a physical presence and controls them, treating them as though they all existed in the same time and place. The parts of past interpenetrate their present and they are inseparable parts of a single continuous, connected process. Space in the play is a motel room on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The place is heterotopia of time: present of reality and past of fantasy coexist on stage. It is heterotopia which is a single real place that juxtaposes several spaces: main stage, the Old Man’s space, audience space and unseen parking lot next the motel room.

In the postmodern world, it is widely believed that being a fool or looking foolish can be more profound and unique than being smart and serious. Comic characters, or fool characters in comedy, have been used as basic tools to make people laugh in various cultures around the world. As such, this study will summarize the types of fool characters that have been depicted in plays and organize how they can be categorized in a culture of laughter as well as revealing their characteristics in performing arts. The ridiculous actions and words of fool characters fall outside the common dichotomy of wisdom and foolishness. This is significant and it is because the ways in which they act overturn the values that we consider to be truthful in the world of experience and contain wit and ridicule beyond the general knowledge. Also, it’s worth pointing out that many comic characters that appear on TV shows are not all the same. To put it simply, each and every funny character has unique traits and these characters predictably change according to the times. In performing arts, a fool character’s personality is displayed through his or her interactions with the audience. That is, on one hand, the character may or may not recognize himself as a fool, while on the other hand, the audience may regard the character as a fool or otherwise. Based on this background, the comic characters that appear in performing arts are categorized into four types and their features are discussed.

In this article, I compared the Tanizaki Zunichiro with the Yeom Sangseup in terms of an extension of the intertextuality between Korean and Japanese literature. The scope of the research was limited to the "A Fool's Love of Tanizaki " and "Two Minds" written in 1925 and 1929. In the works, there is the situation of the era that was suddenly changed at that time is intact. In other words, the modernity of Tokyo and Gyeongseong of the 1920s influenced by Japan are realistically described. In the 1920s Japan, especially in Tokyo, was a period of westernization, such as the diffusion of cultural houses and the industrialization of agriculture to industrialized countries. Gyeongseong was the time when modernization was spurred by the capital of Japanese which was increased. During the Taiso period, Japan was a time when the middle class grew rapidly due to the growth of private companies, and women's status also rose. "A Fool's Love " is the last work that Tanizaki started to use before moving to the Kansai region, and it is regarded as a work in which Western ideology, which is one of the great features of Tanizaki's early literature, is condensed. And it is the work which describe relatively detailed picture of Japanese Westernization process at the time. The two works, "A Fool's Love" and "Two Minds", which were dealt with in this study, gave a glimpse into the situation of the 1920s. In both of Korea and Japan, gender equality and liberation of women in the process of modernization brought about changes in consciousness.

Fool for Love is one of Sam Shepard’s family plays which present the issues of love and struggle between estranged lovers, Eddie and May, as well as those of American family and father/son relationship. Eddie came to May’s stark, low-rent motel room in the Mojave Desert to persuade her to go back to the countryside with him. She still loves him but also hates him because of his relationship with another woman, Countess. By the end of the theater, it is revealed that their love between May and Eddie is an incestuous relationship between half-siblings, which causes family destruction and the suicide of Eddie’s mother. Partly reflecting the writer’s autobiographic life story, he shows how love and passion comes and goes through this play. In Fool for Love, Shepard attempts to portray women characters as the independent, assuming determined and enthusiastic attitudes, different from those of his former plays. As a playwright noted for his performance-oriented plays, Shepard makes use of various kinds of violence in this play, such as physical violence, verbal violence, powerful light and sound on stage, and even fire and suicide. Violence is one of his stage strategies used not only for the communication between main characters and for the ritual ceremony, but also for the interaction between audience and the stage. In the play, there is a special presence called ‘Old Man’ who appears as the absent father not only in the stories of his offsprings but as a ghostlike character on stage as well. His double life with two women goes down from father to son, Eddie, causing his own wife’s agonizing death. Illusion itself or illusion of love which the Old Man is obsessed with, is juxtaposed with the plot of love story between his son and daughter, makes this play more successful. Implying that love can’t be lost at any price, Shepard succeeds in building a sur-realistic or psycho-realistic theater on stage, with the help of the violence and illusion in Fool for Love.

Masculinity studies is devoted to exploring men and masculinities as historically constructed, and questions the feminist assumption that all men have benefited from patriarchal power relations. Such approach to men and masculinities suggests that men’s crisis is caused not merely by feminism but by the general fear of the precariousness of masculinity. This paper contextualizes Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love (1983) in masculinity studies, and explores the crisis of men and masculinity, or, the difficulty in establishing a masculine gender to be originating from not only women but also ‘hegemonic masculinity’. Applying R. W. Connell’s theory of hegemonic masculinity, the paper demonstrates how frontier masculinity as hegemonic masculinity is presented as the cause of Eddie’s crisis by pointing out its compulsion to suppress femininity and to conspire with patriarchy. The paper also focuses on how Eddie attains a sense of masculine self and power through the performance of the rigidly defined normative masculinity. Unlike the scholars who point out such dramatization of masculinity to be demonstrating Eddie’s lack of ability to escape from the myth of the frontier and define Eddie’s predicament as a personal issue, this paper, acknowledging the multiplicity of masculinities, approaches it from masculinity studies point of view and defines it as a societal issue. That is, Eddie’s “gender trouble” is the result of the social exclusion of non-normative masculinities. Fool for Love, the paper concludes, demonstrates a need for the creation of diverse forms of masculinity and an appreciation of such diversity.

This article provides an analysis of the role played by the fool in the plays of W. B. Yeats. It seeks to define Yeats' use of the fool within the twofold context: one is the model provided in the plays of Shakespeare, and the other is the position that it occupies within Yeats' wider conceptual understanding, as explained in his prose writings. Those writings, especially his extended metaphysical study A Vision, show Yeats to be preoccupied by the notion of the fool as the embodiment of a special kind of wisdom that is lacking in the supposedly wise. The fool provides a counterpoint to the limitations of conventional understanding, which is defined as "objective" by offering a "subjective" perspective. After establishing the antithesis between "objective" and "subjective," which can also be interpreted as an antagonism between the self and the anti-self, this article goes on to consider the Shakespearean origins of Yeats' fool. Of the three types of fool found in Shakespeare's plays (the parasitical Buffon, the Court-Fool and the Stage-Clown) Yeats' fools bear the greatest resemblance to the Court-Fool. The most particular reference is made to the Fool in King Lear. Next, discussion focuses on the two plays by Yeats in which fools play the most prominent roles: The Hour-Glass and The Herne's Egg. In conclusion this article argues that Yeats reformed the fool he witnessed in Shakespeare's plays into his own distinctive fool as a dramatic tool to symbolize subjectivity.

Human existence as parallel to actors playing their roles on stage is an important theme expressed in Shakespeare’s King Lear and Grigori Kozintsev’s film adaptation of the same play. Following the tradition of the truth saying fool as depicted by Erasmus in Praise of Folly, the Fool in Shakespeare and Kozintsev plays an important role in highlighting to Lear and the audience that the kingly pomp and authority are mere props in the stage of the world. Kozintsev’s staging of the Fool, while deviating the most from the play, serves to convey the message of Shakespeare’s King Lear. Kozintsev’s Fool is visible throughout the film, entering the scene with the king and remaining in the scene even after the king dies. The Fool grows closer to King Lear in proximity as the King is stripped of his authority. Moreover, the Fool controls the tune of the film’s last scene as he plays music, and enacts the birth into the stage of fools. Such extended presence of the Fool is used by the director to convey the universal message on the nature of human existence explored in Shakespeare.

This paper reveals that the Fool in William Shakespeare’s tragedy King Lear exceeds its role as a traditional court jester as a figure of homo sacer. Lear’s Fool resembles a medieval court jester who is hired to entertain his royal master, but it is my contention that this particular Fool not only fulfills the traditional role but also deviates from a typical description of a court buffoon. In fact, Lear’s fool is generative in bringing about affective change in Lear from the solipsistic monarch to a self-conscious man. What allows this influential power to take effect is the Fool’s state of inclusive exclusion. His extra-judicial positionality conditioned by the suspension of the sovereign law once sanctions his belonging in Lear’s royal circle but simultaneously displaces him from it. The Fool inhabits a type of an ostracized life that Giorgio Agamben calls homo sacer. As such, his untethered status enables him to re-fashion the unfavorable connotation associated with the concept of non-belonging, and unearth the teeming potentiality inherent in the state of exception. In highlighting Lear’s fault and re-envisioning the nature of sovereignty, the Fool’s non-identity is crucial as well. The Fool’s namelessness allows the Fool to become a united subject, an alternative to a unified subject. The Fool troubles the division between the interior and exterior, and the public and private, on which Lear’s sovereign power rests. The paper argues that the Fool, as Lear’s expression of sovereignty, sheds light on the idea that to speak is to perform and to perform is to do politics.

Well-known for a prolific writer, Shepard won a variety of awards. Shepard’s theatrical techniques are particular and salient to investigate. The West is one of his recurring themes, which are focused on American identity, American-ness, American fathers’ masculinity as well. Sam Shepard as a successor to tradition of American plays embodies his peculiar realism on the stage, his theatrical techniques sums up representation of using real props, immediacy and transformation techniques. His Family Trilogy and Family Plays are representative ones to show his theatricalism. This study investigates Sam Shepard's Fool for Love, which belongs to his Family Plays. Its main focus is on spatial division and temporal reversal with a view of incestuous relationships between siblings. This stage has conscious and subconscious spaces which are revealed by dividing characters’ areas onstage. Among them, women's space seems relatively empty like the picture the Old Man pointed out. There certainly exists May, but there is no room for their mothers despite providing their father’s space. Moreover, the father figure shows authorities to cross the border between reality and fantasy. In particular, the Old Man’s utterance has control over Eddie. Memories of the characters onstage are connected to passage of time; especially to show the Old Man’s past duality. For that reason, Eddie and May are inseparably stuck in rhetorical topography of love. Therefore, their foolishness for love is about the Old Man’s dual life with his two families. Like a quote by Archbishop Anthony Bloom, “The proper response to love is to accept it. There is nothing to do.”
