The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between JINJA and SHINTO around the TENNO. As this is a leading role in forming the identity of Japanese people, we want to clarify the influence and significance of the interaction of these three factors on Japanese society. In the background, the phenomenon of ‘Buddhism’led by the TENNO is established, and it can be seen that it became the center of Japanese faith culture and led the formation of Japanese thought and social role. It is reflected not only in the consciousness and expansion of the essence of SHINTO but also in the development of the national religion and the expansion of the TENNO-centered thought. This fact reveals that the relationship between JINJA and SHINTO, which carries the TENNO as a JINJA, is also a natural phenomenon in b oth Japanese and cultural history. It appears that the TENNO emerged under a religious climate rather than from a simple king, and independently existed as a core of Japanese thought and society. In addition, SHINTO which evolved through the cooperation of 80,000 shrines scattered all over the country was collected and gathered in the TENNO's Imperial Palace. Its position and value became more solid by honoring the assembly in the court of the Three Kingdoms of the Palace. In this paper, we tried to find out if the TENNO worshipped in the shrine affects not only the determinants of the SHINTO dignity but also the extensibility of the faith. In the end, the three elements of the TENNO, JINJA, and SHINTO that make up Japanese tradition and history are not expected to decline in the future through the unique characteristics of the JINJA of Japan, such as the divine spirit and wishful thinking. By reaffirming the power of the TENNO, the need for the TENNO and the perception of importance will be inspired in the future.

This paper aims to explore the nature of the conflicts surrounding the shinto shrine between Japanese government and Christianity in Korea during the Japanese occupation period. Japanese government demanded all koreans to participate in shinto shrine worship, arguing that shinto shrine worship is not a religious act but a national ceremony. According to Japanese government, such a worship is a civil duty. Korean christians took different attitudes to such a demand. Roman Catholic church, Anglican church, Methodist church accepted Japanese government's interpretation and participated in shinto shrine worship. Presbyterians, a major denomination of protestantism in korea, however, showed different opinions about shinto shrine worship among themselves. Some missionaries assured that shinto is a religion, shinto shrine is a religious site, and shinto shrine worship is a religious act. They also thought that they have a right of religious freedom. They, therefore, demanded Japanese government that protestant mission school students and teachers should be exempted from a duty of shinto shrine worship. Contrary to them, some presbyterian missionaries, including some korean protestant church leaders, agreed to Japanese government's opinion. They, therefore, took part in shinto shrine worship, saying that shinto shrine worship is just a civil and national ceremony, not a religious one. This paper emphasized that debates surrounding the shinto shrine worship is closely related to the problem of definition of religion and a right of religious freedom. Also, it is stressed, this problem has a continuity with ancestor worship controversies in traditional china, and Dankun statues controversies in contemporary korea.

There exists a kind of religious practice related with Jinja(神社) or Jingi(神祇) in Japan. Nowadays it is generally said that such a practice is “Japan’s indigenous religion” called Shinto(神道). Furthermore, this world-widely accepted understanding about Shinto has been repeatedly reproduced with relation to various types of Nihonjin-ron(日本人論) discourses or Emperor system especially in Japan. The purpose of this essay is to raise objection to that understanding mainly from the perspective of the thesis presented by Kuroda Toshio(黒田俊雄), a specialist in medieval Japanese history. According to him, what we call today “Shinto” is a new concept which was shaped historically in the medieval Kenmitsu(顯密, exoteric-esoteric) system based on Buddhist thoughts, and its essence lies in the state-ideological characteristics for governing people rather than the simple kami-belief(神信仰) orjinja-matsuri(神社祭儀). Additionally, he maintains that Shinto has been regarded as an independent religion ranked with Buddhism or Confucianism under the influence of the western notion of “religion” newly introduced when State-Shinto(國家神道) was formed. In short, this paper will pay attention to the fact that the various discourses on Shinto as “Japan’s indigenous religion” actually include lots of unhistorical fallacies, with critical comments upon the weak points as well as the signification of that Kuroda Thesis.

The sociocultural influence of shrines in Japan is important. However, the ties between Shinto shrines and local communities have become fragile due to urbanization and aging. In addition, Shinto shrines face difficulties managing, forcing them to redefine their relationship with the public. This paper analyzes how Shinto shrines survive in contemporary Japanese society. On the one hand, Shinto shrines are strengthening their relationship with the local community by engaging residents in the preparation of shrine festivals and by making shrines more familiar in their daily lives. On the other hand, they utilize an interregional method aimed at distributing various goshuins or collaborating with pop culture to attract residents from other regions. No longer able to rely solely on the local population, Shinto shrines are striving to survive through an interregional strategy that utilizes the cultural context that exists in Japan. Because people's values have changed from the past, it is difficult to expect an increase in visitors if they do not differentiate themselves from the past. Therefore, the importance of an interregional method will continue to be emphasized.

This study focuses on the relationship between divine compositions (神詠) and human compositions (人詠) in Shinto poetry (神祇歌) in Japanese imperial anthologies. The research primarily analyzes and compares the structure and characteristics of the Shinto poetry sections in the “Senzai Wakashū” and “Shin Kokin Wakashū”. The study revealed the following points: Divine compositions are poems believed to be composed by deities themselves, mainly in the form of oracles (託宣) or dream revelations (夢告). In contrast, human compositions are Shinto poems written by humans involved in Shinto rituals and ceremonies. The “Senzai Wakashū” contains no divine compositions and focuses on human compositions. However, it includes left-side notes indicating the efficacy of dedicatory poems, demonstrating that waka were tools for prayer to the gods. The “Shin Kokin Wakashū” places 13 divine compositions at the beginning, clearly distinguishing them from human compositions. This arrangement is said to reflect the intentions of Emperor Go-Toba. Waka functioned as a medium connecting gods and humans, deeply intertwined with religious rituals and politics. By being included in imperial anthologies, individual poems became sources for generating tales and narratives.

This Study aims to the role of Shinto and Shinto shrine that followed like a shadow that plays in the trajectory of Japanese emigration. In this paper, I pointed out not just the fact that a Shinto shrine erected, but a Shinto acted as a means of injecting a national identity based on the notion that national polity under the Imperial system to Japanese in the process of establishing the modern nation-state was how to positioned in overseas emigration areas. With the expansion of the Japanese Empire, Japanese’s emigration was also expanded in the same trajectory. In keeping Japanese emigrants’ identity and their uniting in the community, a Shinto followed like a shadow from Japan to settlement played a big role. A Shinto became a ‘National Shinto' as a means of founding a national identity under the Imperial system in the process of establishing the modern nation-state from natural religion of premodern and Japanese emigrants remained faithful to a ‘National Shinto' ideology in overseas emigration areas. Therefore, there was a gap between on the one hand Japanese emigrants beyond the boundaries of the nation-state with the expansion of the empire, but on the other they keep a ‘National Shinto' ideology to reinforce its identity as a nation. This fact was one of the examples that Japanese Empire was seeded in collapse, the root cause of Overseas Shinto’s not transplanting in emigration areas.

During the Japanese colonial era, missionaries did not get involved in the politics of Japan and Joseon, observing the principle of separation of church and state according to the instructions of their mission department. It is well shown in the records of the 3.1 Movement by Preston and Bull that the same was true of the Presbyterian Church in the United States(PCUS), which was assigned the Honam region as a missionary field. However, missionaries of the PCUS criticized Japan's invasion of Joseon in the process of evangelizing until they were instructed not to intervene in Joseon's politics from the mission headquarters to which they belonged. In addition, missionaries witnessed and wrote the scene of Japanese violence against Koreans when the March 1st Movement occurred. And by informing acquaintances in their homeland of this fact, they spread to the world that an Independence Movement had occurred in Joseon, and that Japan had used violence in the process of suppressing the 3.1 Movement and the Movement against Shinto worship. This paper summarizes these contents to balance the perspective of missionaries' attitude toward the politically suffering Joseon people during the Japanese colonial period.

This article discusses the topic of ‘accommodation’ in the Church's policy in mission as it was understood by the Japanese Catholic Church in the early Showa era when ultra nationalism was very influential. The Catholic Church in Japan had rejected participation in the practice of shrine visitation since worshipping at shrines was regarded as a sin, and shrine rites were considered superstition. However, the ‘Sophia University -Yasukuni Shrine Incident’ in 1932 and its aftermath precipitated a shift in the Church's policy. The Vatican's Propaganda Fide issued an instruction Pluries instanterque that not only allowed but also encouraged Catholics to attend the Shinto shrine rites, since ceremonies at shrines, it maintained, had only civil values. With the Vatican decree and also guarantees by the Japanese government stating that offering reverence at shrines had patriotic but in no way religious meaning, shrine visits were seen by the Catholic Church as no more than an act of accommodation. However, this article points out, the problem was that the ‘State Shinto’ was founded on the unique religious authority of the Tenno(Emperor). Expressions of patriotic sentiment by the Church became unavoidably acts of obedience to a living god, the Tenno. Thus, although the Catholic Church in Japan intended to seek ways of accommodating to the Japanese culture, what the Church actually did resulted in accommodation to the demands of Japan's ultra nationalism.

This paper has made clear a contrast between the initial and the second survey on the site for Chosen Jingu. The former was characterized by its contextualism to assimilate the shrine to the geography and the history of Japanese society constituted in Seoul over the decades. This resulted in the selection at Wajodai, the northern slope of Namsan. This tunnel-visioned way of thinking was criticized by Chuta Ito who undertook the second survey. Ito reaffirmed the principle that Chosen Jingu would be the general shrine of whole Chosen. He selected Hanyang Park, the western ridge of the Namsan. When the shrine was to built there, it could project its aspect forward from the hill and realize a visual correspondence with the city including Ryuzan. It also could have physical connection to the General Government Office (built in front of the Gyeonbokgung in 1926) through the north-south urban axis created by the urban renewal projects and decorated by the public edifices built between 1925 and 1926. On the other hand, as early as 1911 after Annexation, the existing state rituals performed by the Chosen Dynasty were deprived of public status or room for survival because of their similar characteristics to the State Shinto. Keijo Jinja (originally built in the 1890s as a shrine for Japanese residents), replacing these royal rituals, began to welcome visits of not only commoners, but also Japanese rulers and even the royal family of Chosen. In 1925, Chosen Jingu finally obtained the role of state shrine and the purpose of Keijo Jinja was restricted as a role of the local shrine of Keijo. It involved Korean citizens in ujiko organization in 1926 and the reconstruction project was decided in the same year (completed in 1929). Through this process, Chosen Jingu and Keijo Jinja was structurally incorporated in the city, occupying the right place according to their respective definitions in the system of State Shinto, and thus the physical configuration of politico-religious order was established at the same time. In this sense, the 'project' to rebuild Seoul into a colonial capital city was completed by the late 1920s. From around 1935, however, the situation changed again. The Japanese government began to expect every shrine to serve to mobilize people into war. Keijo Jinja was upgraded to the state shrine (ranked as the Kokuhei-shosha 國幣小社 the Small National Shrine) and the project was decided in around 1935 to expand the scope of its precinct from 23,500㎡ (data from 1932) to 156,600㎡. Furthermore, another shrine called Keijo Gokoku Jinja was founded in 1943 on southwest slope of Namsan facing the extensive Imperial Army Base of Ryuzan district. Three shrines in Keijo were now all under the direct state management. Chuta Ito was already absent from the center stage of state shrine projects and the strengthened power of government engineers was thrown into these projects. Namsan and city of Keijo were certainly changing again. The process in wartime is, however, not the subject of the paper.
On the Modern Interpretation of Shinto-Buddhist Syncretism in Japan

The present study is concerned with the problem of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism in modern Japan. During the long history of co-existence between Buddhism and the native Japanese religion, Shinto, the two were always connected closely but in some historical periods, their relationship became rather complicated. During the Heian period (794―1185) this Shinto-Buddhist syncretism was officially named in the general doctrine of shinbutsu shugo, which proclaimed the Shinto deities, Kami, as an embodiment of Buddhas and Boddhisattvas and established their positions within Buddhist religious system. After the Meiji restoration in 1868, the new government decided to separate Buddhist temples from the state and from Shinto (shinbutsu hanzen) in order to create a new state ideology. Also, as some scholars point out, that because the Meiji government couldn’t separate these two religions definitively, this attempt left a number of problems remaining in the heritage apparent in Japan’s militaristic past, which now modern society is now trying to solve.

The present article discusses the influence of the dispensationalism and the book of revelation on the anti-Shinto movement during the colonial period. When the Korean Church was challenged by Japanese coercion of Shinto worship, there were not a few Christians who suffered persecution and martyrdom in the end. One might argue that the Christian monotheism must have been ‘the’ motive for them to resist the Japanese imperial cult. Admittedly, monotheism is a crux of Christian doctrine by which Christians are exhorted to remain faithful to their God. It is, however, too simplistic a conclusion to consider it as the sole reason for their anti-Shinto movement. Since the most of Korean Christians who defied Shinto practice were dispensationalists, it should not be missed that the dispensationalism played an important role in Korean Christians’ resistance to the emperor worship. Yet, the basic idea of the dispensational pre-millennialism depends on the book of Revelation itself. Thus it is also found that the messages from Revelation were often used against the emperor worship during the colonial period. Therefore, it is not only the dispensational premillennialism but also the book of Revelation that played a crucial role in empowering Korean Christians to veto the Japanese imperial cult, Shinto.

Among the most prominent Shinto shrines of Japanese colonies, the Sapporo Shinto shrine in 1869, the Taiwan Shinto shrine in 1909, and the Garahuto Shinto shrine in 1911 all enshrined three exploitive gods (札幌神社); on the other hand, the most significant Shinto shrines in the Japanese colonies, such as Joseon Shinto shrine, all enshrined Amaterasu from 1925 onward. In addition, the Taiwan Shinto shrine conjointly enshrined Amaterasu at October 25, 1944, in spite of the destruction of its new Shinto shrine on October 23, 1944 by a plane crash. The change of gods enshrined in Shinto shrines of Taiwan might result from the change of dominant discourses, namely the theory of single race in Meiji regime and theory of mixing races for becoming Japanese. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to consider how the gods enshrined in the Shinto shrines of Taiwan changed due to the impact of the dominant theories of single and mixed races in order to discern the relationship between dominant discourse and the enshrinement of gods during the Japanese colonial period. The research objects of this paper are Gaisan Shinto shrine and Taiwan Shinto shrine. This study will be helpful for clarifying distinct characteristics of Taiwanese regional history during Japanese colonization and understanding a long history of overseas Shinto shrines.

In Keijyo(Seoul), from the construction of the grand shrine at Nam Mountain, which was built to serve Amateras at 1898 of the period of the Korean Empire, Japanese shinto shrines were constructed whenever Japanese residents in Keijyo expanded Japanese habitation. In other words, from the grand shrine of Nam Mountain at 1898 to Keijyo national patriotic shrine at 1943, total 29 Japanese shinto shrines were built in Keijyo, specifically in Jung?gu, Yongsan?gu, Dongdaemun?gu, Yeongdeungpo?gu and Dongjak?gu. And these shinto shrines show time?variant characteristics by the Japanese Government?General of Korea’s policy on shinto shrines. Korean previous studies on Japanese shinto shrines in Keijyo have focused on only Joseon Shrine, while the researches on rest shinto shrines in Keijyo are rare. On the other hand, in Japanese previous studies, there are several researches related to kinds and gods of Japanese shinto shrines in Joseon including Keijyo; but, these have a limit to identify what kinds of Japanese shinto shrines in Keijyo were built and what kinds of gods were served depend?ing on the change of the policy on shinto shrines because these studies generalized all of Japanese shinto shrines in Joseon and their gods without considering the change of the policy on shinto shrines. Gods of Japanese shinto shrines reflect the life of people in the region where they are served, and especially, gods of Japanese shinto shrines in colonized Joseon are closely related to religious colonization. In other words, Japanese shinto shrines in colonized Joseon were used for religious colonization of Joseon, as a representative institution of State Shinto which forced visiting Japanese shinto shrines and as a religious institution which helped Japanese residents to settle down in Joseon through implantation of motherland’s popular religion. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to consider time?variant kinds and gods of Japanese shinto shrines in Keijyo; and the reason why I choose Japanese shinto shrines in Keijyo as a subject of this research is that they were most strongly influenced by the Japanese Government?General of Korea’s policy on shinto shrines. Finally, this paper might be important in understanding cultural topography of Japanese shinto shrines in Keijyo and their gods and the relationship between Japanese Government?General of Korea’s religious colonization and Japanese shinto shrines, and might be helpful for identifying Japanese shinto shrines and their gods that were used for religious colonization of Joseon.

Is State Shinto a religion? This long-standing question has been consistent with denial in modern Japanese government policy since the Meiji government’s theory of non-religion of Shinto in 1882, and as an extension, the State Shinto was also treated as outside the category of religion. However, in December 1945, GHQ’s Command of Shinto stated that the reality of State Shinto classified by the Japanese government as non-religious was a religion. Since then, most of the subsequent studies on State Shinto recognize the religious function of State Shinto, there is not yet full of understanding of how State Shinto can be defined as religion other than explaining the emperor’s deification, worship, way of ritual, and relationship between the emperor and the subjects. In this regard, how was the State Shinto defined as a religion in modern Japan? The question is set up, and Kato Genchi in the early 20th century, who was a professor at Japan Army University, and an assistant professor of religious studies and also an assistant professor of Shinto lectures at Tokyo Imperial University, is reviewed. Kato Genchi is the first one to define the concept of State Shinto, systematize State Shinto into a religion, and is regarded as the “origin of State Shinto.” By reviewing the work of reinterpreting the religion, shinto, emperor and national body and redefining the concept within religious studies and shinto studies, it will be possible to confirm the process of creating State Shinto as a religion.

A century after the emergence of discourse of State Shinto in the early 20th century Japan, the other discourse of State Shinto is heating up again now in the early 21st century. The issue around the discourse a century before was whether or not State Shinto was a religion, and now the issue over the past 20 years is whether State Shinto is valid as a national religion centered on national morality, or whether State Shinto should be convicted of driving wartime nationalist ideology based on the Divine-Emperor Faith. In the background of this discussion the concept of State Shinto was ambiguous in Japan after the second World War, the lack of precise analysis of the related concepts that make up the concept of State Shinto, and the recent trend of conservatism in Japan. In response, this paper focuses on Kato Genchi's concept of Kokutai Shinto, which triggered the discoure of State Shinto in the early 20th century. Kato systematized State Shinto as a religion and presented the concept of Kokutai Shinto as its core, because it implies the advocacy of Divine-Emperor Faith. In this paper, we first look at the controversy over State Shinto in the 21st century. On the premise of this, we explore how Kato positioned Tenno as both a political monarch and a religious deity as a result of religious research on the Kokutai, and from that, the process of defining State Shinto as a National Shinto Faith and a Divine-Emperor Faith is reviewed. By examining the concept of Kokutai Shinto as the core of Kato Genchi's State Shinto theory, it will confirm the core of discourse of State Shinto in the early 20th century, as while supplementing the issues omitted in the current discourse of State Shinto in the early 21st century.
