Purpose: The purpose of this study was to confirm the exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis of the burden of 119 emergency medical technicians. Methods: The data collection period was from November 2, 2022 to November 6, 2022. This study had 316 subjects, and the collected data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach's α coefficient using IBM SPSS statistics 27.0. Results: The reliability was .924. The exploratory factor analysis yielded the following information: the first factor was lack of violence policy, the second factor was conflict between the organization and the paramedics, the third factor was lack of psychological support, and the fourth factor was lack of education and communication. The explanation power of 4 factors was 54.31%. Conclusion: This study is significant as it performs exploratory factor analysis as a preliminary step in the development of a burden measurement tool.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of firefighters' job stress and emotional labor on their turnover intention, and analyze the main factors impacting turnover intention in this context. Methods: Based on a descriptive survey study design, we administered a structured questionnaire among 231 firefighters at one fire station in G metropolitan city from November 13 to 27, 2020. Results: Regarding job stress, participants showed differences based on marital status (p<.05), health status (p<.001), total service period (p<.05), and assignment (p<.05). For emotional labor, a significantly higher rate was observed for female than male firefighters (p<.05), with differences also observed in age (p<.001), health status (p<.001), total service period (p<.05), rank (p<.001), and assignment (p<.05). Further, for turnover intention, significant differences were noted with respect to age (p<.001), education (p<.01), health status (p<.001), total service period (p<.01), work unit (p<.05), rank (p<.001), and assignment (p<.05). A significant correlation was found between job stress and emotional labor and turnover intention. Regarding the factors affecting turnover intention, significant differences were noted based on education, rank, job stress, and emotional labor; the explanatory power was 53.9% (F=13.806, p<.001). Conclusion: Tailored support programs must be developed to ease firefighters’ job stress and reduce their emotional labor to facilitate effective manpower management and reduce firefighters' turnover intention.

Purpose: TThe experiment was designed to compare the efficiency of ventilation between conventional BVM ventilation and a newly devised A-BVM ventilation method with Tidal volume, total ventilation rate, average Ventilation speed, and average Ventilation volume. Methods: 40 Paramedical students who agreed to participate in the study were analyzed. Values were measured using IMB PASS after 2 minutes of Brayden Pro manikin with BVM and A-BVM ventilation. The difference in general characteristics was assessed by t-test and ANOVA and the difference in ventilation methods was analyzed by IBM SPSS. Results: A significant difference was found between the two ventilation methods in terms of tidal volume (t=-11.203, p<.001), ventilation time (t=-3.834, p<.001), and optimum ventilation probability (t=10.770, p<.001). A-BVM ventilation method, rather than BVM ventilation method, showed a value close to the appropriate amount recommended by Korean Advanced Life Support (500~600mL) in tidal volume, and higher in optimum ventilation probability. Conclusion: We could identify the a better mode of ventilation. Further studies on the efficacy of existing BVM ventilation methods as compared to device augmented BVM ventilation methods should be carried out to ensure that adequate ventilation is available to patients in clinical practice.

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the level of communication ability between paramedic students and patients in clinical practice. In addition, it was performed to produce essential data contributing to the qualitative improvement of communication ability. Methods: Data were collected from paramedic students with clinical experience after they provided online consent. Data collection was performed from June 3 to July 12, 2022. One hundred forty-seven questionnaires with 92 items were analyzed using SPSS statistics 28.0. Results: 57.1% of students took communication as a subject despite 92.5% of respondents saying that communication education is necessary for them. The average level of participant communication ability was 4.60 (±1.05) points (measured on a 7-point Likert scale). Among the subdivided communication ability levels, the highest level was demonstrated in the physical examination-related interview (5.36±0.96), and the lowest was shown in the completion part (3.93±1.51). Furthermore, a statistically significant difference was found in communication ability level according to school grade (F=4.709, p=.000). The highest correlation (r=.972, p<.001) was obtained between total communication ability and understanding the patient’s point of view. Conclusion: Paramedic students should improve their communication skills to serve patients more effectively. Finally, more educational content should be developed on field-based situations in communication courses.

Purpose: This study was performed to compare and analyze practice self-efficacy, paramedics image, and major satisfaction according to paramedic students practice experience. Methods: The subjects of this study were 224 paramedic students from universities across the country. The analysis methods were completed using the SPSS/WIN 23.0 program as the frequency percentage, mean±standard deviation, independent samples t-test, Pearson correlation, and logistic regression. Results: It was found that students who experienced practical training had higher levels of practical self-efficacy compared to students who did not (adj OR=3.947, 95% CI=1.932-8.061). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is thought that educational strategies and measures in the absence of practice in the paramedic students.

Purpose: This study aimed to provide baseline data for implementing advanced life-support for 119EMTs. This is done with an in-depth examination of the emergency care experiences of the 119EMTs on-site and during transportation. Methods: Interviews were conducted with twelve 119EMTs, and the data were analyzed using the phenomenological method. Results: The 34 topics had 19 sub-components and were analyzed according to seven categories: ‘A work environment where you cannot focus only on emergency care on-site and during transportation’, ‘119EMTs struggling with manpower shortage’, ‘Current status of education blocking the upward standardization of 119EMT’, ‘Implementation of professional emergency care was held back due to the limited legal scope of 119EMT’, ‘Medical oversight makes it difficult to implement emergency care due to low flexibility’, ‘119EMTs who cannot choose hospital selection and find it difficult to receive help’, ‘An evaluation system not reflecting reality at all that only leaves high scores’. Conclusion: This study was undertaken to implement specialized emergency care for 119EMTs; not only the necessity of reviewing the expansion of the work scope of 119EMTs but also the necessity of effective 'Medical Oversight system' reorganization raised as well.

Purpose: This study examined the correlation between satisfaction with major, academic self-efficacy, and academic persistence with the general characteristics of students in a health-related field, to determine factors that affect academic persistence. Methods: The study was conducted on third- and fourth-grade health-field students at Daejion. The questionnaire consisted of a self-report, and a URL was sent by text message to students who agreed to participate after reading the purpose and necessity of the study. Results: Major satisfaction was 4.23 on average, academic self-efficacy was 4.15, and academic continuity was 4.25. Grade and school life satisfaction were the factors correlated with a significant difference in academic persistence. Significant positive correlations were seen between satisfaction with major (r=.637, p<.001) and academic self-efficacy (r=.563, p<.001); higher major satisfaction and academic self-efficacy led to higher academic persistence. Conclusion: A more systematic management approach needs to be conducted by developing active learning participation and applying customized counseling management and support programs by grade to improve the academic self-efficacy and academic persistence of students in health-related fields.

Purpose: This study was attempted to identify the awareness of paramedic students to patients with mental and behavioral disorders and suggest its improvement measures. Methods: Data were collected from the paramedic students after consent to this study through online. The period of data collection was from May 18 to August 1, 2022 and 120 questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS statistics 28.0. Results: The level of prejudice of subjects showed 2.73 points and their level of discrimination showed 2.52 points. There was statistically significant difference according to gender, grade, experience of field practice, reason for major selection etc. in prejudice and discrimination levels. There was statistically significant difference according to contact experience to patients, contact place, taking subjects etc. in prejudice and discrimination levels. The high correlation showed between total prejudice and discrimination (r=.853, p<.001). The improvement measures of an awareness about patients were positive role of mass media, better educational contents etc. Conclusion: Paramedic students need to treat patients with mental and behavioral disorders without prejudice and discrimination. Therefore, it needed to develop and apply the various educational programs for paramedic students to be able to improve an awareness about patients with positive role of mass media about them.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a training protocol to standardize the management of mass casualties as part of the disaster response, and to verify the effectiveness of the training protocol. Methods: The study was conducted as a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group and pretest-posttest design. The protocol was divided into 5 parts, the first for the advance party, the second for the rescue team, the third for the paramedic team, the fourth for the ambulance team, and the fifth for the 119 EMS team. This study was conducted on November 15, 2021 and consisted of 21 subjects in the final experimental group and 23 subjects in the control group. In this study, the prior homogeneity test was analyzed using the χ2 -test, intragroup comparisons were analyzed using the paired t-test, and intragroup comparisons were analyzed using the independent t-test. Results: The protocol was developed in five parts: advance party, rescue team, paramedics team, ambulance team, and 119 EMS team. In verifying the effectiveness of the protocol, it was found that there were significant differences in self-efficacy (t=-0.941, p=0.001) and self confidence within the group (t=-0.025, p=0.001) after the implementation of the mass casualty incident response training program. However, there was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, it is believed that disaster response personnel can experience lower levels of anxiety and tension in disaster situations if they receive practical and realistic education and training. In the future, it is necessary to enhance protocol based practical education that can improve the knowledge and skills of each team and individual.

Purpose: This study aims to provide essential data for developing educational methods and content, tailored for the prehospital field situation, by analyzing the effects of education regarding the management of cardiac arrest. Methods: This study is a primitive experimental study of 55 new firefighters in C Fire Service Academy. Data were collected from the training which was imparted using the CPR virtual reality simulation program (CBS 2.0) in accordance with COVID-19 quarantine rules and social distancing. Data were analyzed utilizing SPSS version 25.0. Results: After VR simulation training, knowledge about performing CPR (14.85) and self-efficacy (4.12) were significantly high (p<.001). Learning immersion was also high (3.99±0.59), but learning satisfaction was even higher (4.34±0.62). Depending on the recruitment field, firefighters showed higher learning immersion (4.04±0.58 vs 3.68±0.63) and self-efficacy (4.16±0.55 vs 3.91±0.84) than 119 EMTs’ but, there was no significant difference between them. In contrast, The quality of performance of CPR by EMT’s was significantly higher than that of firefighters (p=.025). Depending on previous simulation experience, there was no significant difference among dependent variables. Conclusion: Virtual reality simulation shows positive results in learning immersion, learning satisfaction, self-efficacy, and performance of CPR. Therefore, we propose that virtual reality simulation training can be a new educational paradigm.

Purpose: This study aimed to determine a method to reduce stress in clinical practice by identifying how the empathy and self-regulation capacities of paramedic students influence their stress levels. Methods: Selected articles were statistically analyzed using SPSS 21.0. Data on 172 3rd-year and 4th-year paramedic students in Daejeon were used. The subject’s general characteristics (sex, university education, the number of the medical training center, work type, satisfaction with college life, and satisfaction with their major) were analyzed according to empathy and self-regulation ability by t-test and ANOVA. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used for the correlation of empathy, self-regulation ability, and clinical practice stress. Hierarchical regression was used for factors influencing clinical practice. Results: Clinical practice stress levels were significantly different between general characteristics of sex (t=3.002, p=0.003), university education (t=2.815, p=0.006), the number of the medical training center (t=-2.998, p=0.003), work type (t=-2.998, p=0.003), satisfaction with college life (t=5.280, p=0.000), and satisfaction with major (t=5.132, p=0.000). Empathy (r=-.520, p<.001) and self-regulation ability (r=-.330, p<.001) significantly negatively correlated with major variables, and the major factor influencing clinical practice stress levels was empathy. Conclusion: Extension of education and various experiences for improving empathy and developing management programs should be performed to decrease clinical practice stress on paramedic students.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a cardiopulmonary resuscitation training program for firefighters (FD-CPR) to help improve the survival rate after cardiac arrest on the fireground. Methods: The FD-CPR was developed following 3 steps of the FD-CPR instructional design based on the behaviorism theory. The content of the program was validated by a group of 7 experts using the contents validity index (CVI) and through a pilot-test. Results: A scenario consisting of 7 procedures, and a skill performance evaluation tool consisting of 16 questions were developed. The evaluation tool average score for the difficulty test was 41.16% (even) and that for the discrimination test was 0.32 (high). Subsequently, an 80 min training program was developed. As verified by the 7 experts through the CVI, it was as high as 1.0. Conclusion: The FD-CPR developed domestically for the first time in this study was effective in enhancing the CPR performance skills of the firefighters. If FD-CPR is added to the curriculum at the Fire Service Academy educational course for the new firefighters, the CPR performance skills could be maintained. Furthermore, the program can facilitate a better survival rate for colleagues having cardiac arrest on the field.

Purpose: Prompt arrival of emergency vehicles at the scene is important. Therefore, special cases for emergency vehicles are being applied. However, there remain obstacles that obstruct the prompt arrival during dispatch. Methods: First, a literature review revealed five categories of problems with the emergency vehicle priority signal system. Then, the first Delphi survey was conducted to confirm the validity of the five categories. Further, a second Delphi survey was conducted to identify additional problems, and we used a 5-point Likert scale for a third Delphi survey. Results: A total of 92 items were extracted from preceding studies. The validity of the five categories was confirmed in the first Delphi survey. Then, 123 additional items were derived from the second Delphi survey, and the final 50 items were selected from 93 items obtained from the third Delphi survey. Conclusion: This study revealed problems and improvement measures for improving the operation of the emergency vehicle priority signal system that were not proposed in previous studies.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the current status of disasters and initial first aid in the construction industry, and to suggest the deployment of emergency medical technicians and reinforcement of first aid training in the construction industry. Methods: Among industrial accidents in 2020, the accident characteristics and initial first aid that occurred at construction sites were analyzed, and the emergency dispatch of 119 paramedics was analyzed through the SPSS method. Results: The incidence of serious accidents was high at small and medium-sized construction sites with less than 50 workers, and the incidence of falls was high, and there were few first responders who could provide first aid in the beginning. Therefore, it is necessary to improve first aid response capabilities at small construction sites. Conclusion: In order to improve the ability to respond to first aid at construction sites, it is necessary to deploy first responders and strengthen first aid education.
